I am a big fan of the Lord of The Rings movies and I have read all the books, including The Hobbit.

 

The Hobbit will be shown in 3D with something called HFR, High Frame Rate which will show the movie in 48 frames per second instead of the normal 24. This means the quality will be better in motions and such and it will look more realistic. I don't know if it will even be noticeable but I am quite interested to see how it will look like since where I live, Sweden, it's the first movie to ever be shown in HFR.

 

The movie will be split into 3 parts,

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - December 12, 2012 (12th is only for Sweden.14th dec for USA)
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug - December 13, 2013
The Hobbit: There and Back Again - July 18, 2014

My Little Review of Part 1

So I have now watched The Hobbit and I promised I'd do some sort of review. Though it is 5 am here now and I have school in a few hours so I can't really do a full review. Though I'll give you some of my thoughts on it.

 

 

The movie does a good job explaining the story and linking it together with the lotr movies for those who aren't super-into lotr and doesn't remember the movies, or people who haven't read the "The Hobbit" book.

 

The landscapes are beautiful, just like in the lotr movies.

 

The movie does really follow the book. It has changed some scenes and removed just a few things

They have edited the scene where they meet the trolls. Here, instead of tricking them into fighting eachother until the sun rises,

They have also removed quite some of the riddles Bilbo and Gollum asked. This was a good move of them though.

 

The scene with how Bilbo escapes the goblin cave with Gollum is changed.

Now instead of discovering that the ring is lost after Bilbo has left, he figures out that he took it and there comes a chasing scene. Also in the book, before Bilbo could exit he had to sneak pass some orcs and walk through a small door. This scene was removed.

 

 

 

 

There are more things but I cant bring it all up atm.

 

 

 

 

, but otherwise it's quite accurate to the book! I mean they actually took lines straight from the book and gave them to the characters un-edited. That's awesome!

 

The 48 fps was noticable, though not very. You could see that there was a difference at fast movements and camera rotations since the quality was better and if felt a little more realistic. Though there wasn't much of a difference so don't expect anything big. The thing that it's a bit too much and that people got ill seems like bullshit to me but idk.

 

Martin Freeman does an awesome job as Bilbo!

 

This movie was alot.. How should I say it, less "dark" than the lord of the rings movies. It didn't have this evil in it really. Even though it has evil orcs and goblins in it. There was alot of these small little jokes too. But all together it kinda felt like one of those family adventure movies for some reason.

 

A bad thing I think is about the movie though, is that the orcs and goblins does not look like in the lord of the rings movies. I know they are not at the same location and this takes place about 70 years before lotr, but I kinda miss those really wild and evil looking goblins. The orcs in this movie were too.. How should I say it, human. It's hard to explain but you'll see what I mean. For example some orcs walks like monkeys in lotr. Here they walk just like humans.

 

The songs were good as expected, but I was a bit disappointed though. There was this famous lotr soundtrack and this new "over the mountains" (or whatever it's called) playing over and over again in different verisions. There were other songs, even some of them you will recognose from lotr, but in the running scenes and fighting scenes it was this "over the mountains" playing over and over.

 

Another bad thing is the goblin king in this movie. He was totally ugly and it feels like they made him look like this just to make people laugh. (Which makes it feel even more like a family movie). He kinda looks like the gungan king from Star Wars (pic below is a pic of the star wars character)

A fun thing I noticed was that they spoke alot of their own languages in the movie. For example the elves spoke elvish and the orcs spoke that mordor language. This was not all the time.

 

the Lord of the rings movies are 10/10s for me. This movie was good but idk. it didn't have that feel. though I'd give a 8/10

What I think about Part 2:

It didn't start out exactly where the first movie ended, instead, this movie first gave this little flashback with Thorin which I liked a lot and then it started directly at the place where they meet Beorn. One of the first things I noticed with this film was that it was filmed in a very cool way, there was a lot of close-ups and the camera where traveling through different places like in a video game film (one of the best camera works was when Azog stood on a cliff). The second The Hobbit movie has waaay more action that the first one. In this movie, things happened all the time, you followed two "different" things at the same time, and this made it feel like watching a LotR movie, which I loved.

 

This new elven character Tauriel, was pretty cool, however I felt like they gave her maybe a little too big role in the movie. She's a normal warrior but the movie made it feel like she was some sort of princess. I must say, everything in the movie was awesomely done, as I said it felt more like lotr than the first one did, however you still have these things that makes it.... Just not lotr material. It's hard to explain what I mean without spoiling anything but I don't mean the jokes or anything like that, it's more like some of the things that happened were things that never would happen if it was filmed lotr-style. By the way, this movie was funny Especially one scene. do a barrel roll

 

One this I disliked about the first movie was that it wasn't bloody/gory enough. They hit their enemies multiple times with swords but you could not see any damage done. However in the second movie, you do see this a couple of times. Believe it or not but this movie actually had two jump scares in it which I didn't even expect myself haha. It was great to see those in 3D!

 

I don't really have much to say about the movie other than that I loved it, the only thing I disliked was one particular scene in the end that was a bit ridiculous if you ask me. ...Though there was a couple of things that was added in the movie that is not in the books and one of those scenes is... ...let me just say you get the "omgomgomgomg =O" feeling when seeing it. When I first heard about how much that was going to be in the 2nd movie, I wondered how they would be able to make a 3rd cause there wouldn't be a lot left to show, however now I kinda understand what they're doing here.

 

One thing I wanted more of in the movie was awesome music, the ending music was kinda meh. But whatever. I think I'll give the movie a 9/10 (lotr is 10 for me and this was good, but not as good)

I like the LOTR movies but I'm skeptical about watching the new movie because it doesn't seem to contain that grimdark setting.

I have read The Hobbit and and seen all of the movies several times. I really like the lore and everything in the Lord of the Rings series, though the books are just INSANELY long. I've read the first one, which I thought was really good. 

 

As for the movie, I'm psyched. It's a shame that they haven't done this sooner; all they had was the dumb animated one!

I'm a pretty big fan of The Lord of the Rings movies, so I will most likely watch The Hobbit. I haven't read the books except for Fellowship of the Ring, I think. Anyway, it looks like it's gonna be a great movie

I have seen the extended edition of the Lord of the Rings trilogy and i absolutely love them.   not sure which is my favorite i think it's return of the king.    I haven't read it all the way through, it's a little bit dry reading for my taste so i read about half of it a long time ago and then gave up. yes i know i'm an awful person for saying that.  I dunno, I suspect it will be good considering peter jackson is director.  I will go see it, eventually. maybe not on opening day.    i thought that they might do three.  that's more money for the studios.

More detail in the first option, you know?

I've never really been a huge fantasy guy, I'm more like a sci-fi guy. So I'm probably not going to see it unless nothing else good is playing at the time.

I'll definitely watch it. I thought that the other Lord of the Rings movies were masterpieces. I'm not crazy about it though, I've never read any of the books. My brother is though, he's read all the books, watches all the movies once a month, and owns two gold-plated the One Ring To Rule Them All replica's. He's extremely stoked about this movie. It looks about the same very high quality as the others were.

Awesome! I will be there at opening night too as I say in the OP. The funny thing is that since I live in Sweden, the movie will be shown 6 hours before it's shown in america since we're about 6 hours ahead

They are a little bit long, 3 hours and 30 mins each, but I promise you epicness.

I have literally seen them more than 20 times each.

Well if you read the OP (maybe you did haha) you can see that it'll be shown in HFR, 48 frames per second. This will make the quality even better in fast motions and such, making it look even more realistic.

Well actually it does. It's just that all movies that are made into movies always remove some parts from the book to not make it like 5 hours long. Just look at the harry potter movies and compare it to the books. Why Peter Jackson made it into 3 movies is because of 3 reasons. 1. Because he didn't want to exclude anything from the book. 2. Because it gives more money. 3. Because it will keep the fans excited.

So bacically HFR is a new filming technique which will show the movie with more realistic motions.

I expect it to be great. I love that they're splitting it into 3 movies so they can more easily tell the whole story without straying from the book.

You want to pay extra and see this in 3D, They invented camera technology just for this movie. The film is being shot digitally at 48 frames per second. Peter Jackson the director said test audiences told him it was like the theater was was gone and they were actually looking into another world.

Its going to be awesome!

Watch the 3rd! It's the best one! Also, it seems like everyone is asking about the HFR. If you guys read the original post you should know what it is (first post in this thread). Read it, I explain everything in there.

At first it was only going to be two movies, but later on Peter Jackson decided to make it a triology.

Have you see the Lord of The Rings movies? Yes, actually I've been re-watching the whole entire series again. Yes, I have been a very happy person. Favorite characters are all the Hobbits, (Mary and Pippin are just so comical) and Orlando Bloom's role as the elf, Legolas.

Do you like them? BOY DO I.

 

Have you read The Hobbit? I've tried to find some Lord of the Rings books, but I never do.

 

What are your expectations of The Hobbit? Just as amazing as the other Lord of the Rings series. (And maybe we might find out more of the Dwarves.)

I am a huge lord of the rings fan, I've been looking for new information about these movies once a day for a year now.

I got lord of the rings games, models, soundtracks, all extended movies, all books, posters on wall, you name it.

(actually I was #1 player in the world in the game "Lord of The Rings: Battle for Middle-earth" before the servers was taken down)
