Twilight Sparkle: Winter Wrap Up. That episode wasn't just a chance to show off her skills at management and organisation, but a generally fantastic episode. Every single pony was written spot-on in all their different activities, it had that real community atmosphere of all of Ponyville working together like one giant family, there were plenty of humorous moments to dot that episode, as well as heartwarming moments - that episode's in my top ten overall.

Applejack: I'd hesitate to call this Applejack-specific, even if she did write the end letter, but Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000. It got Applejack spot-on - her fervent faith to tradition and to playing fair, one of her best qualities. The Flim Flam brothers were in it, and they're my favourite antagonists of the series. There were tons of humorous moments to make it a great episode.

Rainbow Dash: Wonderbolt Academy by a mile. The people saying that Rainbow Dash was shallow/cocky/a jerk were absolutely silenced once that episode aired. With her being my second favourite, it was great to see. It's just a wonderful episode in itself, again it's in my top ten episodes overall.

Pinkie Pie: Too Many Pinkie Pies, this episode was the shining moment of the entire series for me. Even though the stereotype that Pinkie Pie was mere comic relief had already got absolutely obliterated by Party Of One, Too Many Pinkie Pies struck the gong again by bringing out Pinkie Pie's true depth and throwing her into her deepest fears; that of not being accepted as a source of happiness, and that of being associated with distress. And the reason I like this more than Party Of One is the sense of irony - being brought down by your own happiness. It's a real inner and physical struggle, and it really touches me.

Fluttershy: I'm honestly stuck on this one. It'd be a coin flip between Putting Your Hoof Down and Hurricane Fluttershy. Even though I am a much bigger fan of the former, they both gave Fluttershy loads of space for development, as well as having some great moments in them.

Rarity: I'd say Secret of My Excess right away if it actually counted as one of her episodes. It was very centred on Spike, but Rarity was a crucial element of it. I'm going to pick that as her best episode, actually, because it's just such a fantastic episode. We saw her appreciation for generosity (Spike giving her the fire ruby) showing truth to her element, the symbolism in the episode was phenomenal with tips of the hat to us that remind me why we love this series so much. The scene at the end of the episode, where they're falling, is one of my favourite Rarity scenes. The moral tackled in the episode is superb. I could go on for ages, but this is enough for now.

Applejack: The Last Roundup and has nothing to do with Derpy.

Fluttershy: -.- Dragonshy/Keep Calm, although most of hers are great.

Pinkie: Party of One. Pretty much the only one of hers I really like.

RD: Probably Sonic Rainboom. I don't count SiP as hers but if I did, it would be there.

Rarity: Even harder choice than Fluttershy. We'll go with Sweet and Elite though. (Sisterhooves Sociall if I can make that count :P)

Twilight: Canterlot Wedding easily, if that count's. If not, Lesson Zero. She's too plain for me usually.

Extras:

Spike: Spike at your service (he didn't get full screen time, which I liked :P)

CMC: Sleepless in Ponyville (if we aren't going with separate CMC here)

Luna: Any and every episode she makes and appearance in :P

We were meant to rule together, little sister......

Twilight Sparkle: Winter Wrap-Up. This episode was a major test to get her to fit into the community better. Although she was friends with the Mane Six already, her relationship with the rest of Ponyville wasn't so established. This episode changed all that by her attempting to help out only to screw up at every opportunity (Applejack's farm, Rarity's nests, and Fluttershy's animals). Since this episode, she's been much closer with Ponyville and is more social altogether.

Rainbow Dash: Wonderbolts Academy. This episode showed how you take a bold idea and execute it correctly. Unlike many of season one's episodes, this one showed a major development in the writing department (and one for the better): balance a character's flaws and strengths to tell a story rather than overcome a flaw in itself. Dash's flaws of her cockiness, pride, fragile ego, and self-doubt were balanced by her tenacity, confidence, speed, and especially loyalty to her family.

Applejack: Apple Family Reunion. The Last Roundup took this place for a long time, but that's since changed. This one has a very season one-like feel, and Morrow wrote her very well. Instead of exploiting her pride and stubbornness, Applejack concentrated on trying to do something to both help the family and make the reunion memorable, only to find out that sometimes the simplest tasks are more beneficial.

Pinkie Pie: Party of One. She's hyper and hilarious, but this episode also shows her extremely sensitive side and how much her friends mean to her. When she thought her friends abandoned her, she took a major turn for the worse, eventually reverting back to the Pinkamena days while maintaining her family's rock farm. This episode gave her a layer of depth that wasn't really explored: her connection to her friends and how much the disconnection can sway her attitude.

Rarity: Sweet and Elite or Sisterhooves Special. Sweet and Elite involved her in taking part of the higher aspects of Canterlot society, notably her dresses, parties, and subsequent friendship with Fancy Pants (the first fully developed, sympathetic stallion). But not only that, Twilight had a party herself, and snubbing her would be a travesty. She showed that she really cares for her friends. Meanwhile, Sisterhooves Special explored her relationship with Sweetie Belle and explored her psyche following their argument. Her line, "As Celestia is my witness, I shall never be sisterless again!" is a classic line.

Fluttershy: Putting Your Hoof Down. This episode focused on Fluttershy's introverted, shy psyche and how much outside bullshit affected her mentally. She was perfect for Iron Will's tough-as-nails advice, and she really ate it up to the point of being a copycat and pushover herself. She viewed the pushovers as monsters, and with Iron Will's lesson, she reversed her role. Williams wrote her very well by exploring this internal psyche and having her balance between being assertive and kind rather than sticking to one or the other.

Twilight Sparkle: Lesson Zero

Rainbow Dash: Sonic Rainboom

Rarity: It's tough...a tie between Suited for Success and Sisterhooves Social, but I think SIsterhooves Social wins here

Applejack: Apple Family Reunion

Fluttershy: Hurricane Fluttershy

Pinkie Pie: Griffon the Brush Off

Twilight Sparkle: Lesson Zero. Primarily because of its humor, but I think it showed off Twilight's flaws, however ridiculous she seemed.

Pinkie Pie: Party of One or Too Many Pinkie Pies. It's a toss-up between these two. They're both downright hilarious, but I think the latter episode gave Pinkie a bigger and better lesson.

Rainbow Dash: Sonic Rainboom. Wonderbolts Academy comes extremely close, but I'm a sucker for the original season, and this episode is what made me love Dash.

Rarity: Suited For Success. This is the episode that showed off just how generous and kind Rarity is. This was Rarity at her peak of likability, and sometimes she struggles to show off her more likable qualities. This episode had all of them.

Fluttershy: Dragonshy or Hurricane Fluttershy. Another tie. I didn't think Dragonshy could ever be topped, as its one of my favorite episodes ever, but Hurricane Fluttershy was just amazing in how touching it was. It depends. If I want funny, I pick the former, if I like the feels, I'll pick the later. :P

Applejack: My favorite pony has too many amazing episodes. I've got a ridiculously hard three way tie between Applebuck Season, The Last Roundup, and Apple Family Reunion. Who says AJ is a background pony? I think every season has provided some timeless classics involving her.

Long post incoming!

Pinkie Pie: Too Many Pinkie Pies

Now this was a hard choice. Party Of One, A Friend In Deed, Baby Cakes, and this episode...

But I think I liked this one the most because it did all the things I liked from the above. It deepened Pinkie's character, it showed the social side of Pinkie Pie, and it involved her learning to deal with responsibility and maturity. Shame that more of the episode wasn't devoted to Sad!Pinkie, but I really loved the little bits that showed how much the real Pinkie Pie truly cared for her friends, and has learned from her lesson in A Friend In Deed (like how she decided to do an activity that would be quiet and relaxing for Rainbow Dash). I did get a kick out of Dave Polsky's humor for once, perhaps because it seemed to just generate naturally from the characters and from the absurdity of the situation. And the clone Pinkie Pies were an extremely clever foil, almost more clever than Lightning Dust was for Rainbow Dash. Because, in one sense, they are Pinkie Pie. In another, they have only the faintest trappings of the true character inside.

Rainbow Dash: Hurricane Fluttershy Sleepless In Ponyville The Mysterious Mare Do Well

As you can see, my immediate first two choices were both not actually Rainbow Dash episodes. Having disqualified those, I tried to think of the "good" Rainbow Dash episodes. Sonic Rainboom. Read It And Weep. Wonderbolt Academy. But I enjoyed none of those quite as much as the questionable-morality-ridden, mean-rest-of-Mane-6-filled, frighting-forward-faces episode that was Mare Do Well. It did so much wrong. But it got one thing right, one very big and important thing.

i-pD2RcQ2-S.png

Rainbow Dash. I loved her more in this episode than Applejack. Heck, I loved her more in this episode than most of the focus characters of "good" episodes. And it's all thanks to the plot structure. You see, Merriwether Williams is a true master of pacing. Even the widely reviled Spike At Your Service was praised for its pacing. In this department, she beats out even M. A. Larson for consistent quality. And that's what made Mare Do Well work for me.

First time, RD is modest and heroic. Second time, she's heroic and again surprised by the attention, but finds herself basking in the praise instead of shying from it; she gently brings the baby up the hill, but tosses it when she eyes the paparazzi. Third time, she's craving the rush of appreciation, and looks at the crowd expectantly when she saves the elderly. Look carefully at her expression in the below picture; that's the face of someone hopefully seeking approval, not of simplistic arrogance. There's an entire subtext of hidden insecurity here, the kind that she showed in Sonic Rainboom. Except more subtle. And with more interesting and dark consequences.

i-HWjGv4s-S.png

Something I never mentioned before; despite the ethical issues posed by the ending, I think it was a happy one for RD. When her friends tell her that she doesn't have to brag, they are also saying that she doesn't have to do all this stuff to get people to like her. Ponies like her friends still appreciate what she does without any of her attention-seeking behavior. I think that's why she was happy at the end; a burden of sorts was lifted off of her.

Okay, that's enough about that episode for today.

Applejack: Apple Family Reunion

I don't usually just quote myself, but I wrote TWO long blog posts covering every single thing I could think of about this episode that I liked. I don't have anything more to say, seriously. Maybe a summary? Alright: This episode was a celebration of everything amazing about Applejack.

Rarity: Suited for Success

Easy peasy. Rarity's situation is easily identifiable for any person who's ever done some sort of creative project for someone else ever. Now, I don't know for certain how common that is, but it sure does it for me, and I'm pretty sure it does for a lot of others as well. She's an amazingly hard worker, and takes time to match the outfits with the personalities of the ponies. And when her friends are completely terrible and don't like her ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS outfits that she made for them, she just works harder to make them happy, even when it's costing her materials and time. So, about Rarity not being generous?

i-ZrLxSpw-S.png

Horseapples. She not only sacrifices time, but her very artistic vision and sense of aesthetics. Those second dresses were probably painful for her to make, but she just does it. How can you not absolutely love Rarity in this episode? I don't know, but apparently some people disliked it. I do not understand these people.

Twilight Sparkle: Winter Wrap Up

For a while, it was The Return of Harmony Part 2, but on rewatch, this episode got better and that one got worse. This broke down Twilight Sparkle in much the same way Discord did, but it also includes all of her adorkable aspects AND a song. I've been in her place here many times, and have some of the organization and leadership skills as she does, so I completely understood and felt an atachment to what happened here. Interestingly enough, these very same issues are addressed in...

Fluttershy: Hurricane Fluttershy

You knew this was coming. This was a parallel story, really, and for both Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy, it is about the fact that even if the best you can is not very good at all, it still counts. Fluttershy isn't just a poor flier, though, and much of the episode's poignancy would've been lost without the depth that was put into this. Her already weak skills were magnified by childhood bullying, which is shown very disturbingly (and, from what I've heard, realistically) to still haunt her to this day. Rainbow Dash was also bullied, but didn't deal with it in the same way. She tries to comfort the friend the best she can... but fails, just as Fluttershy fails to fly fast. In the hurricane, both find out the same thing; while maybe the hurricane never broke the record and RD didn't impress her idols and Fluttershy still couldn't fly as fast as a normal pegasus, it still mattered. That was genius.

Applejack: Apple Family Reunion - It had the most touching moment of the series for me.  It also took incredible strength for Applejack to ask for help for once.

Fluttershy: Hurricane Fluttershy - Fluttershy is haunted by her old fears for almost the entire episode, but is able to overcome them when her friends are counting on her.

Pinkie Pie: Party of One - One of the reasons Pinkie Pie needs her friends so badly is to keep Pinkamena at bay.

Rainbow Dash: Hurricane Fluttershy - Seeing her wish she could help her best friend, but she couldn't, was heartrending.

Rarity: Sisterhooves Social - This was a great summary of the give and take relationship these sisters have.

Twilight Sparkle: Return to Harmony - Watching Twilight Sparkle's surrender...and then retract that surrender a little later, was one of the best moments of the series.

Twilight:  Lesson Zero.  Arguably my favorite episode of the series.   It's a combination of straight up humor and heartwarming acts of friendship.

Rarity:  A Dog and a Pony Show.   Rarity's drama takes the front seat in this episode, which I really, really, liked.  Plus, Bowie references, and some Rarity and Spike characterization.

Pinkie Pie:  Party of One.  It covers the topic of insanity in a clever way, which just shows how smart the writers really are.   On top of that, we get to see a sad Pinkie, which is big in the characterization department.

Rainbow Dash:  Sonic Rainboom.  Cliche answer, but it is one of the best episodes of the series.  Rainbow shows that she's not as overconfident as she appears to be.    It's also the first glimpse of Cloudsdale (at least I believe) and introduces us to this magical realm.   We see a heroic Rainbow too, which is pretty kickass.

Applejack:  The Last Roundup.  It's a pretty dramatic episode, and pretty epic by MLP's standards.   The Western setting is cool, and Applejack shines as a wonderful athlete hindered by high expectations.

Fluttershy: Hurricane Fluttershy.   Firstly, there's an awesome montage.  Secondly, Fluttershy faces her fears once more, an comes through for her friends.  It's just a heartwarming episode overall.

You mean I have to pick!? Darn it.

Ok well I've never pick all that much thought into this really, but I'll try.

Fluttershy: Ironically this ones easy even though shes my favorite Mane 6. "Hurricane Fluttershy" why? Because its just simply awesome, the amount of charactor development the scrip is really good it has some emotional highs and lows and even shows a bit of Rainbows soft caring side for Fluttershy, while Fluttershy overcomes some of her deepest rooted fears. This is probably one of my favorite overall episodes actually.

Twilight: You know this ones actually really hard, I was thinking about "Lesson Zero" Or "Its about time" but I think i'm actually going with Winter wrap up, not just because of the song or anything, the episode itself was actually quite good. It was actually kinda relatable to me because Twilight had to find a place to fit in, it kinda reminds me of when I first came to public school at the beginning of 8th grade, plus the rest of the episode is really great, and Twilight running off crying was actually kinda one of the more touching moments in the show for me, for whatever reason. And you know.. the songs pretty awesome.

Pinkie: This ones even harder :P. Its almost a tie for me right now between "Party of One" and "A Friend in Deed" I think I'll go with "A Friend In Deed" Just because of the Smile Smile Smile song :D. They're both pretty close for me though, kinda different mooded episodes really.

Rainbow Dash: Hm, Well if "Sleepless In Ponyville" Somehow counts as one of hers, then I pick that one. Otherwise I'm gonna have to say"Sonic Rainboom" I guess :P, maybe "May the best pet Win" idk. ;P I have a hard time choosing here for sure, i guess I'll go with Sonic Rainboom, since its a really well made episode that shows Rainbow Actually getting nervous over something.

Rarity: I think while I like the song in "Sweet and Elite" and the episodes pretty good to, I'm gonna have to go with "Suited for Sucess" not only because of the song but I also didn't really give this episode a chance for most of my 1st watch of MLP up until I saw "Sweet and Elite" then I got the interest to watch "Suited for success" and I loved it :D. The songs great but the rest of its still pretty awesome.

Applejack: Honestly I think "Apple Family Reunion" Is easily my favorite AJ episode, just because one she finally gets a song, and not to mention it feels like a good AJ episode, she doesn't get overshadowed by anypony in the episode really much, she still shows up quite a bit in it, and it just feels like her episode, which is a little more rare for AJ episodes.

Ok finally after alot of thought I think that's my list, I really had to think since I never really thought much about this before. Who knows they may change tomorrow Xd.

Twilight: Lesson Zero

Sorry but this episode cracks me up xD

Rainbow Dash: Wonderbolt Academy

Amazing episode, one of the best from season 3

Applejack: The last Roundup

Really cool episode, with something not related to apples.

Rarity: A dog and pony show

This one is pure glory

Pinkie Pie: Baby Cakes

One of my favorite from season 2.  Never gets old.

Fluttershy: Hurricane Fluttershy

So much focus on Pegasi and Fluttershy learning something else than being assertive.

Pinkie Pie: A Friend in Deed (Forget Party of One and its barely functional plot. This episode showed us the real Pinkie.)

Rainbow Dash: Sonic Rainboom (All her episodes have been great, but you can't beat a classic.)

Applejack: The Last Roundup (An awesome episode that got overlooked. AJ is a proud and hard-working pony who can't stand to let others down, and this one did the best job of showing that.)

Rarity: A Dog and Pony Show (No matter where life takes her, a true lady is never out of her element. With nary a dress or Canterlot noble in sight, Rarity was still adorable and well in control of her situation. That's the side of her I like the best.)

Twilight Sparkle: It's About Time (She was going to mess with time travel eventually and here she did it very much in character.)

Fluttershy: Hurricane Fluttershy (Goes without saying.)

  • 3 weeks later...

I decided to rez this because I can and because I have the following updates to make.

Applejack~Apple Family Reunion: I didn't think it was possible but I finally have a favorite Applejack episode and it made this Applejack fanboy like her even more which I swear I thought would cause the pony apocalypse to happen.

Rainbow Dash~Wonderbolt Academy: I am tempted to put Sleepless in Ponyville as it changed my opinion of Rainbow Dash from thinking she was a tad overrated to making her my 3rd and then later my 2nd favorite pony. But that episode seemed to focus a great deal more on Scootaloo which is not necessarily a bad thing as I think it is one of the best episodes of the series. Wonderbolt Academy picked up where this left off and showed that Rainbow Dash has grown the most out of the mane 6 as she has a bit of a role reversal from the brash reckless pony to the one who is willing to do the right thing even at the risk of her dreams of becoming a Wonderbolt.

Rainbow Dash - Read It and Weep

Fluttershy - Hurricane Fluttershy

Twilight Sparkle - It's About Time

Rarity - Suited for Success

Applejack - The Last Roundup
