How do you have a lucid dream?

Dashicorn

Recommended Posts

Ive read how but I want a simplified version explaining it.   A lucid dream is where you can control what you do and what happens in your dream.  I want to know how to HAVE one.

What is it called when you have a lucid dream that you can't control? I've had several experiences where I become aware that I am dreaming and yet my dream continues on its own and I am helpless to do anything about it until I feel so trapped that my body awakens from the stress.

Sounds like a nightmare.  Ive heard of a *gulp* condition that involves that.  You may ( if that concerned ) want to speak with some of high interest and knowledge in this subject.  Feel sorry for you man.

That is really a hard question to answer. However whenever I have the best dreams is when I am really out of it when I am sleeping. I think when you enter REM sleep that is where you have "lucid" dreams and such. I remember one dream where I literally thought I was at a certain place and once I woke up, I was freaked out because the dream seemed to be so real! I actually thought I was at in my dreams it seemed so real at the time!

I have had those dreams as well and quite frankly... hey tend to scare the living daylights out of me depending on the situation.

I remeber one time I had a dream, and I have told this numerous times, that I was in some other country helping to make some king of building facility and as soon as I woke up (at least, I thought I did) I was greeted by the Grim Reaper standing right next to my bed :(

That petrified me to no end and I was screaming and flailing until I finally forced myself awake.

I don't ever want that to happen again :(

I have a "reoccurring" dream where I would have the same exact dream for a numerous amounts of days. And those dreams just go away after sometime too!

But man your dream sounded scary as hell o.o....

It takes practice to control a lucid dream. Oftentimes new lucid dreamers, upon their first lucid dream, immediately try to fly or fulfill some fantasy or what-not. Doing that type of crazy stuff takes practice, and if you don't start small you'll lose control of the dream and forget that you're dreaming. I've done that a couple times, and it is really disorienting when you wake up.

As to how you lucid dream...there are different things you can listen to or think about beforehand. But during your dream, there are a couple ways you can know you're dreaming:

* Light switches won't do anything

* Mirrors won't create your reflection

* You can't see your hands or (at least in my case) your nose

* Other things

It was, let me tell you, as soon as I ACTUALLY woke up I screamed bloody murder and sort of cried a little bit.

That dream honestly scared the shit out of me :(

To me lucid dreaming is when asleep you realize that you are dreaming and can force yourself awake or interact with this dream while out of your body.

Only once was I conscious of the fact that I was dreaming. Forcing myself to wake up was terrifying. The entire time I was trying to force my eyes open or move around so I could sit up but since the body paralyzes itself while you're asleep it was a challenge. It felt like I was tearing myself out of my own body but couldn't get up.

If I have to go through something like that again I don't want to experience lucid dreaming.

Here are a few tips that came in handy for me:

- Think about your dreams, and dreaming in general, often in everyday life.  Keeping a dream journal is the best method.

- Try to wake up without opening your eyes, or moving any part of your body.  If you can remember to do this, sometimes you'll be able to drift right back into a dream, but stay conscious.

- Take afternoon naps on days when you can't sleep in.  Having a tired body, but an active mind, is incredibly valuable.

- When you finally do succeed, don't get too excited.  Stay calm, and start small when experimenting with dream control.  If you feel like you're beginning to wake up, try to get more tactile interaction with your dream world to stay there.

Oh, one thing I forgot. When you finally do realize you're dreaming, your brain will try to wake you up. As SOON as you realize you're dreaming, start spinning in circles. This jumbles up something-or-other in your brain and, while it tries to sort itself out, you get to dream more. In addition, spinning often disorients yourself enough that you can completely change the scene of your dream.

I thought a lucid dream is when your in a dream and you realize inside the dream that your dreaming. Anyway i get those from time  to time usually by imagining shutting a door im near without touching it if it happens then i pretty much proved to myself im dreaming because i dont have physic powers like that. Getting a little off topic it feels like my dreams get somwhat unstable after my realizations and it goes on by itself.

BTW watch inception

I've tried lucid dreaming before, but to no avail. I blame myself for never getting into the dream journal thing, though.  :(  Nopony got time for that crap. Not me, anyway. Hopefully I'll get back into it one of these days, but I never remember my dreams anymore... Probably because I hardly sleep. (Insert Lesson Zero Twilight face here)

This is why I'm scared to try lucid dreaming, though I know of the advantages … Ive heard the stories of how being able to control it one second then losing control the next and having "false awakenings" where you wake up in a dream and you think you've woken up for real.

EDIT- and the nightmares *shudders* trapped in them knowing its not real but can't wake up ( I've heard a lot of stories good and bad ).

If you want to have a lucid dream I got a few tips. It may or may not help, it all comes down to your brain basically :/

1. Take an extra nap when you wake up

When you wake up in the morning, don't get up immediately, just go to sleep again. This enables a longer time of REM sleep, the type of sleep where most dreams and especially lucid dreams occur.

2. Make a dream journal

Have a diary or something next to your bed and write in it if you have a dream. It may help you recognize patterns in your dreams.

3. Before going to bed, keep your brain active

Try and read something before you go to bed, or just any other thing that keeps your brain active for at least 10 minutes.

Now, don't expect too much of the dream. It is hard to control dreams and often you'll wake up before you can do anything.

Well it sure feels like a nightmare, even if what's happening in the dream isn't scary at all. It's just the awareness that I'm dreaming coupled with the inability to control anything that terrifies me.

It doesn't happen very often (like 7 times in my life), so I'm not gonna make a big deal out of it.

Good it does not happen often. Maybe you accidentally do the things that enable it rarely.

Thanks for the tips I'm going to try them tonight ( if I remember lol ), hopefully will have mastered in a week … well that is my goal anyway

There is no real way to force yourself to achieve a lucid dream. Sometimes if you are relaxed to an almost zen-like state before you fall asleep you can be more likely to have one, but otherwise they're random. Many people never have one their entire lives. One way to ensure that you never have one is to be preoccupied by stress or other things while falling asleep. To dream lucid you need to not have any worries, and be completely content and at peace by the time you go to bed.

I'm one of the lucky ones, and I have them frequently.

Well, you have to notice some things that seam, kinda out-of-whack. Try remembering if you woke up this morning. I almost always lucid dream, that is WHEN I dream. I usually don't dream too often though.

Every time you sleep for more than a couple hours, you dream.  You may not remember it, but it always happens.  In your case, maybe you're not be remembering them because nothing in them appears strange?  Or maybe Luna's messing with your head...

I have a rather odd question and it may even be a really silly-stupid one at that BUT HERE IT IS, can Lucid Dreaming kill you?

If you aren't able to control it, can something like that kill you?

I really do not want to worry anypony but that is one thing I worry about as I have had Nightmares in which I could not wake up from until I forced myself out of it
