First of all, look at the title. Now ignore the title. I'm not good with grammar.

 

Okay, so I drew this. This is the first time I have tried drawing all my OCs at once (And I need to make RP pages for the two that aren't Firebolt). This is also the first time I've tried using lensflare. Which is nice.

This took a lot less time then I thought it would, but it still took pretty long. Made this mostly for my avatar, but turned out quite nice. I think when I have people watching me work I end up drawing better.

 

Tools used: Paint tool Sai and Photoshop CS6 (lightly)

 

As said in title, any and all criticism is welcome. I prefer harsher criticism, but any comments are nice. I like comments. ._.

To start, I think you have done a pretty good job seeing as this is your first time drawing all three together in one composition.  The colors go quite well together and balanced between each character.  That being said, however, I do have a few critiques that I hope help you in some way.

 

First, be careful how you set up your composition.  The front pegasus, which I am assuming is Firebolt, looks as though she is standing on top of the other ponies' tails.  A small detail, yes, but it can also cause a bit of confusion as far as the placement of your characters and how it is perceived by the viewer.  

 

Also, perhaps next time you can place your characters so they are equally represented.  What I mean is that your unicorn OC is so far behind Firebolt that her cutie mark cannot been seen as well as any other features we may be missing.  She has a nice design, at least from what I can see, so do not be afraid to show her off.

 

And now I know I am really knit-picking at this point, but the lighting (which I am guessing is the sun) seems a bit unnatural and appears to be a bit too close for it to actually be sunshine.  Just disperse the light a bit more and that should fix that.

 

Please bear in mind that these are merely my opinions, which will hopefully will be corrected if I may have said anything in error.  But, overall, I believe you did a fine job and hope to see more of your work.  Keep it up and good night!

First of all, thanks for the good critism. I love when people nitpick at my work. I have a little note thing for this.

 

And yes... the tails look somewhat painful. Generally doing stuff like this I crop that out. For that exact reason.

 

The sunshine is mostly because the canvas is fairly small, and is meant for an avatar, which is 150x150. So it has to be fairly over the top to actually be see-able.

 

Oh, and the last one totally has a cutie mark, I haven't just not designed it yet and took the easy route out.

I'll have to say that maybe theres just a bit to much sunlight on the left OC(Dunno his name). Thats me being picky .

Definitely some fantastic work being shown off here. 

I'm a mediocre artist myself, rather terrible at digital imaging too, I might add.

 

However there are a few things I have noticed you could improve upon 

(I'm going to list everything I saw, so some things may have been said already)

 

1) Far too much sunlight from the left corner, while it doesn't overpower the other colours it does make it look blurry in the top left unless you are looking directly there. 

 

2) The left OC seems to have an eye missing, or the visible eye is set too far back (at least that's how it looks to me) 

 

3) Firebolt seems to be standing on the other ponies tails, that surely can't be comfy o.O 

 

4) Not sure about the wings on Firebolt either, are they supposed to be darker on the outer feathers? It looks good, but odd at the same time.

 

Otherwise there's nothing really that I can comment on, seeing as I dont fully understand how to draw anything aside from a basic 2D pony on GIMP...

Her wings are supposed to be multicolored, so yes, the outer feathers are supposed to be dark grey.

 

I think my eyes should look at tails more often, doing the ground last is what screwed me over I think, layering it with the background.

I actually had a join me up for this one. It was in my status, but only one person came. I can message you next time if you want. Would do a speed paint, but I watch videos on half my screen. Plus not good with video software.

My best thing to say on the tails/shading problem, is to erase the tips that poke out the bottom of FireBolt's hooves, and just remove the lense flare.  It creates a pretty... conflicting shading view.

Sadly, that doesn't work because of how the left's tail is set up. Worked for the right though.

 

I have an addiction to lens flares. So I'm leaving it in.

I think some of the comments I’m gonna make was already done by others, but I think the best way to criticize and give a feedback is to give your “first look”.

 

First, it’s really well done  , I already saw those characters, when you ask advices for the aspect of the water’s one, and I didn’t gave my choice about those because they were all very good. Firebolt is clearly the most badass and putting her in the middle was perfect.

 

Now for the criticism:

Judging by the position of the nose of the other ponies, you could expect to see both of their eyes, like a ¾ view. There’s like an empty gap in their faces.

 

For the green one now, the top of her mane is too near from her head (that’s kinda personal, but it feels like she’s got a little hear).

 

The angle of the 3 ponies’ legs needs to be more round, if it’s to rectangular if looks less natural.

 

As you can see my criticism is really personal, and someone with different tastes might find it just perfect. And to be honest I couldn’t do half of the work you did with this picture.

 

To make it more visual, I allowed myself to make a copy and show directly what tickles me when I first look at it, only to make it more “visual”. It’s not meant to be disrespectful and if you feel angry about it, just say it and I’ll erase it forever, it’s just that I personally like when someone “show” me the problems in my drawings.

The lens flare corrupts Firebolt's left wing if I turn it up any more.

 

 

 

Her cutie mark ended up being this, but I don't really like it.

If you mean the heads having the little line, I always draw them like that. So they are just positioned forward.

There's a little indent where the noses go in, which is only really correctly placed if the head is tilted a little more towards the viewer, as there is something for the nose to be in front of. I hope I'm explaining this right!

If the sun is on the left, the blue pony would be in more shadow as she is stood behind her friends.

This is purely personal preference, but I think the thickness of the outlines makes them look a little flat.

 

I do like the facial expressions, and I think the designs are really lovely. Well done!

I wish I had a tablet... But yet I couldn't do such good artwork like you did. But I can easily beat you in a paper and pencil drawing... But again, we are talking about YOUR drawing.

Anyways, I complimented you, now I insult myself.

Your drawing is superior to mine in every aspect, and I shall not show the drawing that was supposed to be correcting yours... I used MS Paint and circles, curves, and other shape things to make a vector.

 

And seriously, I have failed.

The lines are my personal preference, mostly from how I draw the skeletons. It's also easier in linework layers.

 

The thickness is also my style/the show's style. It makes them look flat, yes, but I prefer it to no lines. I've tried that before. Failed terribly.

Actually, I don't use a tablet. I have one. But never actually used it effectively enough for me to use it for all my drawings. So I rarely use it.

 

I would suggest trying to draw it on paper first. I was quite lucky knowing how to draw horses before ponies became an internet thing. So if you slighly edit the skeleton for them, you pretty much have a pony. And I'm sure there are tutorials somewhere.

I would suggest getting GIMP. It's free, so yea. Then just upload something drawn already and vector it. I do that sometimes, just not for this specific piece.

Sure thing! As long as you're fine with me making very stupid mistakes and watching videos that you can't hear the audio to, I can definitely send you a message. (As a note, I generally do the basic lines before hand because that takes forever.)
