I'm not sure if I"d use the word "deserved" for getting a ticket, since none of them (besides the bribes) "worked" to earn the tickets before it came.

However I honestly think the best choice for who should have gotten the second ticket would have been Rarity.

Here's why

1 Rarity is high class and besides Twilight is the most suited and knowledgeable about these sort of events.

2 She wanted to meet someone who she would presumably have few to no other chances to meet.

3  She's worked on dresses for it for a long time , however I"m sure it's even more helpful for ideas as well as business to actually attend such an event.

Why not the others (or at least not as good choices)

1 Rainbow Dash seems to have no trouble getting to see the wonderbolts (since they seem to make many a public performance)

2 Perhaps we just don't see it , but they don't even actually seem to perform that night(the wonderbolts)

3 Fluttershy: If she could only see the animals for one night , how could she really make friends with them? Wouldn't it be kind of sad at the end of the night?

4 Applejack  she's a country girl and doesn't even like fancy events.

5 I don't think you'd need a ticket to set up a stand outside. Even so an event like a gala , would probably be catered anyway. As much as they're ponies, apples in general don't seem like a gala food item.

6  Pinkie pie , also kind of socially inept when it comes to high society, it doesn't take a fortune teller to know she wouldn't have had a fun time at a gala.

7 Also for Pinkie Pie, Applejack, Rainbow Dash it wasn't a only that night possible kind of event.

I think Applejack deserved to go, because she is doing it for her family and not for selfish desires. Even though Rarity, Rainbow Dash, and Fluttershy all deserved to go to the Gala w/ Twilight but, you know being selfless can get you nice things in return.

While it isn't exactly relevant to who deserved it the most, I thought that it was interesting that the show subtly told us who Twilight would end up giving the ticket to if she really did have to decide. At one point in the episode, Twilight said that she could give her ticket away and give away 2 tickets, but that'd still leave 3 disappointed friends. These disappointed friends are depicted as:

So, it means that Twilight wanted to give her extra ticket to either Applejack or Fluttershy. I understand Applejack, but... Fluttershy? Perhaps Twilight just doesn't want to see Fluttershy being disappointed, or there are animals out that night that aren't out at any other time or something.

Apple Jack deserved it most for 2 reasons 1. Twilight invited her first. 2.She was the only one that was going to do something selfless where as the rest are just chasing dreams or trying to find love or have fun Aj wanted to help boost the family bushiness to pay for granny smiths hip and a new barn.

Chalk another one up for Applejack. Of all of the ponies who wanted to go and why, Applejack is the lone one who wanted to go for not just the best reason, but the most unselfish, too. She wanted to create more business for the farm so she can create more revenue, but also wanted to use some of those resulting finances in order for Granny Smith to walk more comfortably.

I'm so surprised AJ is in the lead with this! Yeah it's nice to help your family but it's rude to show up to a party with your own food to sell...The Princess has food prepared for the guests for free! Just, tacky and rude. Rarity really wanted it so much, I just felt her pain. Rainbow Dash was a close second because it would really help her career but the difference between RD and Rarity's desires is that RD could care less about the Gala part and Rarity wanted all of it, it's in her entire personality to want it.

In all honesty, and I don't really know how to say this without raising eyebrows, but imo AJ's selflessness sorta kills the episode. I can understand the ticket decision being difficult between "I want to fulfill my dreams" vs "I want to find true love" for example, but for Twilight to put "I want to raise money for my family" in the same boat as "I WANT TO ROCK AND ROLL ALL NIGHT, AND PARTY EVERY DAY!" is absolutely asinine.

The entire episode I kept thinking to myself "AJ totally deserves to go, everyone else is just being selfish" whe I should really been feeling "Oh see deserves it, but she also desrves it and, ugh! Can't decide!"

I'm not knocking on any of the mane 6, I'm just expressing why this episode doesn't work for me

Give Twilight a break. It's only episode three, after all. This is the very first time she's dealing with these ponies as friends in a non-life-threatening situation. She hasn't built up the long-term relationships that would let her choose one (or two) without feeling like she betrayed the rest. And she's still very new to all this friendship stuff in general anyway.

If this kind of situation came up in season three, on the other hand.......

I'm actually torn between Applejack and Fluttershy.

Fluttershy wanted to see new animals and make new friends at the royal garden. Applejack wanted to raise some money for her family. ... ... Well that actually made things easier.

I'm gonna say Applejack. She was the only pony who wanted to go to the gala on selfless reasons. Other ponies, even Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie, wanted to go to the Gala for the own selfish reasons, though there was really nothing wrong with that. Applejack just would have deserved to go the Gala the most with Twilight.

I think I'm the only one who had a problem with Applejack intending to embarrass all of Ponyville by setting up a stand and selling things at the Gala. It would be like showing up at the Academy Awards and selling hotdogs while dressed in an evening gown! That's why I would have picked Rainbow Dash. Let the girl live the dream and meet the Wonderbolts!

Applejack definitely. She wanted to help her family, which is a lot more important than having fun and partying, I also thought Rarity's reason was a bit far fetched.

How is wanting to meet a prince at a gala farfetched?

As opposed to you know trying to sell country food at an event where there is likely free, fancier food anyway?

I don't get why so much support for Applejack when we didn't even need to see the rest of the episode to know that Applejack would have terrible sales.

Okay we are in the minority but at least a few of us do agree. I mean, it's embarrassing  but it's also tacky and most of all rude.

I would never go to someone's event and ask their guests for money without their explicit permission and then, only if it's for charity, not for my business. It made absolutely no sense, and Applejack's whole attitude on the thing bothered me because she wanted to do this, but she didn't want to bother getting dressed up to do it or even learn enough about it to realize it was a horrible idea and rude to Princesses Celestia and Luna. Bleh. Irksome. To me that isn't selfless, it's brash.

I'm glad someone else thinks this. When I first saw the episode I was all "WTF Applejack? You have more class than that!" In reality, palace guards would have escorted her off of the grounds for using her invitation as a means of setting up an unlicensed food vending cart at the biggest high society event of the season! I mean really? Applejack trying to sell food where all the food and drink was free, is like something Bud Abbot would have slapped Lou Costello for suggesting they do in one of their movies! (Movies I dearly love, by the way!)

Yes...but I don't want anyone to think I don't love Applejack as a whole. This is just the one circumstance where she seemed thoughtless. She is a great pony though and she looked gorgeous in her adorable cowgirl gala dress :) I think she just forgets that fancy people's opinions are just as valid, but she learned that later on in the slumber party episode so I guess this is just...something she was weak in at the time. I doubt she'd ever make that same mistake twice!

Again I emphasize, Rarity needed it most - she dreamed of it her whole life.

I still side with Rainbow Dash, but apparently RD had been pestering the Woonderbolts for some time already. Rarity, even if she didn't meet her prince, would receive an immediate boost in sales by being seen at the Gala in one of her own creations. Besides, she had been making Gala dresses for a few seasons at least, and never got an invite! This also got me thinking. In the "Art of the Dress" song, we have the line "Even if you have to fudge it, keep it within our budget". I know Rarity offered to make the dresses, but she should get SOMETHING for her time and the cost of materials. Especially after the others nearly destroyed her career! Did the girls ever pay?

I think she's too generous to accept, even if they tried to pay her for it. I can't see her accepting any payments, especially when they convinced Hoity Toity to stay for a second viewing.

All of their ideas were very far-fetched, the Gala episode more than proved that. The only thing that separated Applejack from the rest of them were her selfless motivations.

I largely agree with your post, but I have one qualm:

Twilight (who is mysteriously not in this poll) was probably the only one who had a dream that had something of a possibility of actually coming true. Being the sun goddess's personal student is actually a pretty justifiable reason for assuming that she'll be able to take some time out to talk with you. And she was the only one who didn't go absolutely bonkers by the end, and only got her outfit ruined because of the stampede and mass hysteria.

Twilight might have actually been the one second most deserving to go after Applejack, since her ambitions were the most modest of them.

I see your point. One could argue that Rainbow might have been realistic in expecting some more attention from the people whose lives she happened to save earlier in the season as well. I don't think that it is especially unrealistic or unreasonable to expect some private time with Celestia at all, but it might be to expect it during a party that seems to be partially about mingling with her subjects. I think that Celestia assumed that Twilight would understand that these guests don't get a chance to exchange letters with her on a regular basis and it was only fair for her to try to divide her attention as equally as possible, even if Twilight is more important to her.

So I still think Twilight didn't think her dream through especially well, but you do make a good case for her.

Very interesting question. Even though I would like to say Fluttershy because otherwise I wouldn't be able to witness these famous scenes....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riH6cz6fsxA

In seriousness I would go with Rainbow Dash. Because the Gala seemed to be a big event that happened only once a year or something and was the best time for her to get with the big wigs of the Wonderbolts Academy.

Pinkie Pie just wanted to party which she already does anyway and could go to the Gala any other year. Same with Fluttershy who could go any other year. Rarity could always get connects with Twilight Sparkle who's brother is in fact now a Prince and Twi is very close with Celestia as well. Applejack's business opportunity can arise in many other times not just then.

Sure Rainbow Dash could try the next year if she didn't make it on this one but that cause that special moment to decay in which she saved and wowed the Wonderbolts during that flying competition and brought water up to Cloudsdale.

Applejack.  Because...well it's obvious isn't it?  Think of Granny Smith here!

Dashie could acheive her dream eventually.  She isn't the pony to give up anyway.

Rarity could find love anywhere.  And besides, that Prince looked like a weirdo from the start.

Pinkie...there's plenty of parties Pinkie.  You could make a better one I bet.

Flutter, all animals love you.  Do you really need more? (does that sound mean?)

I also forgot to point out how Twilight Sparkle would of been able to relate to Rainbow Dash as she too was very ambitious to enter the Magic Academy and succeeded, why wouldn't she try to help Rainbow Dash fulfill her dreams too?

Hello!

To be honest, it's hard to choose really. But i'll have to say Rarity. Personally, i believe Rarity, had the most class, to be able to atend such a place. Rarity also had quite a few reasons.
