Bronies = cancer of the internet?

Some people happen to be cancer.

Some cancers happen to be bronies.

Everything, given enough fans, will happen to have cancers.

(Not that I think cancer is the right word in the first place, though, if I'm honest -_- )

Though if it helps ya sleep better at night to think that your cramped little bubble of bliss and ignorance is all there is to life, then go ahead. Feel free... though I don't think freedom is something you'll be getting much of if you're so afraid of everything different to yourself.

Like everyone else here said, Bronies aren't the problem, for the most part. Sure, there are a few bad apples in the fandom, but the real problem are the trolls and haters!

Hating on someone simply because they like a show that's outside the norm for someone their age? Not cool, brah!

Cancer is the right word if only the physical aspects of the mutation are used as reference to the growth of the fandom through the internet. It it sometimes the wrong word if the word is used in a derogatory manner. That's all there is to say, in my humble, amazing, almighty opinion.

"Q'sal, a singular, labyrinthine mind composed of a billion conflicting, paradoxical wills. Have you ever seen the swirling Aetherstorms in it's atmosphere? Smelled the shifting perfumes of intrigue upon it's people? Tasted the gluttonous banquets of ambition permeating from the Sorcerer-Technocrats? Heard the exquisite lies and thoughts of an unknowable population? No Slaaneshi pleasure I have indulged in comes close to that feeling, only in the embrace of Apotheosis could one aspire to find anything greater."

People keep saying that bronies are "Obnoxious" and push "ponies in everyone's face." In my experience I have never met an obnoxious brony or one who tried to "Shove ponies in people's faces." I have seen a few weird ones here and there, but not obnoxious. But now, I have seen a heap of brony haters. Take Nostalgia Critic reviews on You Tube. If someone even mentions ponies, or even has a pony as an avatar, the comment section will be swarming with haters and trolls on him or her. So tell me, who's the cancer again?

That phrase is much older than the FiM fandom, so I wouldn't pay it any attention. I remember the time around /b/day where 'newfags' and 'oldfags' were all calling each other the cancer of the internet. I haven't been to 4chan in ages so I have no clue if those things are still going on there.

It's simply a name attached to anything the cogs in the Internet Hate Machine feel particularly strong about (when they're not too busy infighting) and it really doesn't mean much anymore. Like so many other things it's completely meaningless.

Having said all this, some bronies are very obnoxious, but the same can be said for members of all fandoms around the world. It's not something unique to this fandom. It may seem that way because we get a huge amount of attention from more 'mainstream' media, but fandoms in general have been called 'the cancer that is killing the internet' for years. Don't take it personally, but for the love of God or Science or whatever you believe in, don't argue with people who use this phrase and certainly don't be self-righteous or defensive about it.

Seriously, anything you say will feed them and the more indignant you get, the more they will latch onto it. Then they will take your responses and use them to argue the point that we're all a bunch of idiots, regardless of the validity of the points you make. Ignore them, because it is the only way to beat them.

Is the Brony phenomenon the cancer of the internet?

Hmmm...

Absolutely! Cancer is a disease in which cells mutate into something new and abnormal, and if the internet (or the world in general) was a body (a grey, horrible, and joyless body), then bronies would be a rampaging plague of biblical proportions.

Side effects of Brony Cancer may include: rainbows, smiles, cupcakes, and an unbelievable tenacity in the face of adversity.

That post says it all right there. Oh! And muffins! Lots and lots of muffins!

I strongly disagree with that part because, time and again, I've found that laughing at them and giving back positive to their negative has brought about some good results. Granted, not a lot but any progress is better than none. I refer you to this screencap taken of some posts put on a Youtube Brony-hate site that I was responding to, yesterday:

post-31850-0-00977600-1423411362_thumb.jpg

Granted, it was only one positive response but, still, one is better than none and, as far as I'm concerned, anything I can do to reduce the hate, even if only by a little bit, is still progress in the right direction. So, ITT ignoring them doesn't make them go away because they can always find an audience but, for those of us who are willing to put in the effort, any positive change is good change and makes our world and the world in general a better place.

Perhaps bronies wouldn't be called "the cancer of the internet" if we didn't try and force the show on everyone.

Sorry if I laugh but it's not at you but at the obnoxious Bronies who think they have to preach to everyone in sight. Still, looking back, I'm reminded of the Golden Age of the Trekkie Fandom back in the early 90s.

Talk about obnoxious! Holy cripes! More than a few of the members of that fandom were obnoxious beyond belief! Now, it's important to know that this was back in the days before 4chan and the whole Internet Hate Machine thing that was spawned from that site.

The Internet at that time was pretty much plastered with Trek fan sites from end to end. You couldn't go anywhere on the Internet without finding at least one post from some obnoxious fan posting a rant about how it was unfair to hate on the Trekkies and flame-wars abounded, especially on the old Usenet boards. It was ridiculous!

So, looking back on that, I think the amount of Brony fandom hate being projected on sites like Youtube is nothing by comparison. In fact, I think the levels these days are pretty tolerable compared to back then.

Still, there's that point about the obnoxious members of the fandom. Perhaps some energy could be directed in finding ways to positively get them to tone down their enthusiasm a little so that they'd be a little less obnoxious? After all, most Brony hate groups direct their energy toward the obnoxious ones and not necessarily at us, especially if they get a chance to see just how cool so many of us really are.

One thing I will never understand about this fandom; Why do you take troll comments so literally?

They are trolls, they are trying to make bronies upset because they respond in an upset way, which amuses them. Simple as that. It doesn't matter if they are talking about "Cancer of the internet" or talking about neckbeards or fedora's, its all jibberish buzzwords that seek to get people mad. They aren't even GOOD at trolling for goodness sake, I've never saw a lazier lot than the anti-bronies who basically are just copy pasting their comments.

If you really don't like their comment, flag them, go on their profile and find their other comments, flag them, then block the guy and report his channel. Its a lot better than debating "what do they mean metaphorically when they say 'cancer of the internet'?"

I don't really care what the non bronys think about me or all of us.... All we have to do is love and tolerate :)

Maybe someone should show them an episode or something?

Meh, typical trolls failing at being funny with buzzwords like that.

Really, they are trying to tick them off. They're the equivalent of a school bully flicking a kid in the back and seeing if they respond. It's not funny, but really just ignore them and they'll stop.

A cancer causes harm, the fandom is, for the most part and in all the ways that matter, creative, charitable, friendly and accepting. The only thing comparable to a cancer or virus about the fandom is how fast it spread and how large it's gotten in only a few years since it began. That's a good and bad thing, but that's not what defines the fandom so, it doesn't really matter.

Well there's gangs of child molesters online who use things such as minecraft and facebook to lure children, yet a bunch of people enjoying a harmless TV show they're the real cancer of the internet, people's priorities these days are so backwards.

  • 2 weeks later...

i dont really count it as a cancer. more like a fandom. reason: most popular fandoms tend to cross over with other fandoms. like im sure homestuck has crawled its way in a fan art or two of mlp somewhere in pony town as uch as dr whooves has as well :) so its safe to say so far its a fair trade of sharing :)

Ehh, I've seen this kind of phrase used to describe Pokémon fans too.  So I wouldn't really give it too much thought.

I've herd this "cancer of the Internet" thing way too many times lol. In a way, we are a "cancer". (We have a big fanbase after all! Bronies are like cells; growing bigger and bigger with each passing day). But for those who are using the term in a negative way, well, I don't care what they say. It's there opinion, just like we as a fandom have opinions on everything ranging from politics to pop culture.

This might be an unpopular and potentially offensive opinion, but I consider cancer to be the cancer of the internet.
