I assume her task will be to maintain the day's afternoon, with her jurisdiction being over the main Ponyville area. I take it she will be a subordinate to Princess Celestia. A minor government official assigned to represent Ponyville and the Everfree Forest. It would suit Twilight as she would still be able to live in the library and maintain close contact with her friends! Case in point, the Mane 6 lives on! Of course, I haven't forgotten the sudden lack of equality between Twi and her friends in this matter. I wonder how it will affect them in the course of S4......

I say friendship as well. She was already quite skilled in magic even before she was sent to Ponyville and it was friendship that truly changed her life for the better and it made her discover the elements of harmony. Sure her element is magic, but the elements are linked together by one thing, that is friendship.

 

To me, it is the most logical and best possible scenario. With this in mind, Tara Strong's words about Twilicorn ring in my head and I cannot wait until season 4, despite the wait.

That's awesome! Made me smile. :-) Well she may keep that as her day job, but moonlighting might annoy Luna. But she does enjoy big and beautiful libraries.

Yes, I do think that'll be the best way for the show to pan out. It'd really bug me if everyone's always bowing to Twilight or constantly dropping the 'Princess' title. I think she'd want to be treated as everyone's equal and not have such attention. I can see the premiere dealing with this, in fact, and Twilight making it clear that she doesn't want to live like Celestia, Luna and Cadence. Then, Twilight and her friends will just get called up for special tasks occasionally, much like in seasons 1 + 2. She'll have become a princess, but the show won't really be affected. At least, that's what I'm hoping.

Well, I voted for Magic. I see I'm the only one who did. I suppose, it is a little too obvious for it to be magic, isn't it?

 

I suppose my second guess would be friendship. Personally, I don't think she's gonna have any huge royal duties that will take her away from her friends, like constantly watching over some aspect of life such as magic or friendship.

I'm not sure, but I think Twilight will control the entire Elements of Harmony, considering that she is the most important element, Magic.

i don't think she will control all the elements, that would mean the mane6 are useless. Also, the idea is that each element is equally important, but twilight's is the most "elusive", meaning its hard to harness, not most powerful

Because by default Friendship IS Magic and friendship is the root of the type of magic that most epitomizes her and her friends. As for harmony, that seems like something that ALL the princesses work to maintain.

From the beginning, I though she'd be the Princess of Magic. While friendship and harmony are running themes throughout the show, magic makes more sense to me. For the other princesses, their cutie marks have to do with what their royal duties are. Celestia's is a sun - raises the sun. Luna's is a moon - raises the moon. Cadence's is a heart - spreads love. Also, it's the crystal heart, then she becomes the Crystal Princess. Twilight gets her cutie mark when she discovers that her special talent is magic, so keeping in line with the others, it would make sense. Also, in MMC, she becomes a princess because of all of her trials throughout the series. However, what pushes her over the edge is that she creates new magic. It just seems like she's set up to be the Princess of Magic.

 

If not that, though, I think friendship is the second most likely. Twilight's mastery and understanding of magic is highly emphasized throughout the show, and often, her solutions to problems are due to her deep understanding of friendship. So that's also possible, but for me, magic seems to fit a little better. It's also not so broad. Anyone can be friends and experience friendship, and it's a little odd to say that one is better at friendship than someone else, let alone the master of friendship. Magic, on the other hand, requires talent, study and ability, so it makes sense that one could be the best at magic. Thus, it seems to fit just a little better, to me.

 

As for harmony, it just seems to be a byproduct of friendship within the show. It's a running theme, but not as much as friendship is. Also, the relics that they use are called The Elements of Harmony. I just think the double-name would be a bit strange. Also, technically, anybody can wield the Elements of Harmony, so while Twilight and her friends are typically the ones who use them, this isn't something that's exclusive to Twilight.

 

I also thought about her being a princess of a place, but thus far, we've only had one princess like that, Cadence, and that was after she was already established as the Princess of Love. I think that it's probably much more common to have princesses of qualities rather than of places. Also, the only place I can think she'd be the princess of is Ponyville. Ponyville already has the mayor, so it seems odd to have a princess -and- a mayor of a place. Though, somehow, that did work out in The Nightmare Before Christmas...

I have 4 opinions on this topic. She could be, as follows:

Princess of stars

Princess of Magic

Princess of Harmony

And, Princess of Friendship.

 

I don't really have any reasons, these options just seem most logical to me.

I'm thinking she will control the embodiment of magic itself. It's quite obvious magic is her strong point and we know she has an obsession with Starswirl the bearded (Several times that he was referenced. Even in season 3 finale.) You could argue that she could control friendship and or harmony but i think she can't do that without her friends. So i think most likely it would be magic.

How about the first two together? After all friendship is magic. Twilight's talent was and is magic. This was represented by her cutie mark which had on it five stars. Those stars represented her friends. She received her cutie mark as the result of them all being connected for a brief time in Cutie Mark Chronicles. The show has shown there is a huge and now inseparable connection between her aptitude for magic and her aptitude for friendship. It is shown in how she got her cutie mark, in her cutie mark, and in her very actions.

It all began with the forging of the Great Elements.

 

Two were given to the Unicorns; immortal, wisest and fairest of all beings. Two, to the Earth Ponies, great miners and craftsmen of the mountain halls. The ring came to a shopkeeper Tom, who took it deep into the tunnels beneath the floorboards of his shop, and there it consumed him. The Element gave to Tom unnatural long life. For five hundred years it poisoned his mind; and in the gloom of Tom's store, it waited. Darkness crept back into the forests of the world. Rumor grew of a shadow in the sky, whispers of a nameless fear, and the Element of Power perceived.

 

Its time had now come. It abandoned Tom. But then something happened that the Ring did not intend. It was picked up by the most unlikely creature imaginable. An illusionist, Trixie Lulamoon of the Magician's Alliance.

 

 

For the time will soon come when magic tricks illusions will shape the fortunes of all...

Twilight Sparkle, Princess Of Magic

Twilight received her cutie mark when her magical powers awakened, not because she made friends or commanded the Elements of Harmony.

 

It is strongly implied she did already have some sort of connection with her future friends at that point, with Rainbow's first Sonic Rainboom triggering key life-changing events for all of them as fillies. But their actual friendship and acquisition of the Elements came many years later, long after each discovered their special talents.

 

Indeed, at the beginning of the series, Twilight was anything but skilled in the ways of friendship, but she still had her cutie mark, and thus her special talent. In Boast Busters, Twilight and Spike discuss the fact that her special talent is magic. But perhaps most telling of all, Twilight's element is the Element of Magic.

The mysterious Sixth Element, the Element of Magic, would only appear when the other five elements were present and ignited by the spark which resides in the heart of us all. And the Element of Magic, like all the other elements, matches the cutie mark of its bearer.

 

As her trials against Discord proved, Twilight could not command the power of Friendship alone, nor could she command the Elements of Harmony without the true commitment of her friends. Neither Friendship or Harmony are hers alone to control, only Magic.

 

And though Friendship and Harmony were necessary for Twilight to complete Star Swirl's unfinished masterpiece, she became a princess because she created new magic. That was her "doctoral thesis", if you will: completing that spell.

 

Of course I could be wrong, and I know other fans may disagree (which is always fine), but I think the case is strongest for Princess of Magic.

 

Thus I believe Twilight Sparkle is the Princess of Magic.

 

Five White Orbiting Stars Versus Six

Meanwhile, since we're on the subject, the question of Twilight Sparkle's cutie mark gaining a sixth orbiting star upon her transformation to an alicorn intrigues me.

 

Though I believe there's been talk (officially?) that the six white stars are an animation error, they appear in Twilight's transformation sequence and on the royal banners carried by her heralds at her coronation, so it's a pretty extended error if that is the case.

 

Will they keep the six stars in Season Four, or revert everything, including Twilght's royal emblem, to five stars? I don't know. But I've always thought of the five stars as symbolizing the other five Elements: Twilight's friends.

 

As others have speculated (and beyond the scope of this topic, I'm sure), maybe that sixth white star might mean something more than a designer's desire for symmetry. Perhaps a great deal more, like another friend and element, perhaps?

 

Or not.

 

I guess we'll know in about six months.

@ponyvangelist I can't find fault in your ideas or analysis, yet I still think she will be the Princess of Friendship. The reason is that the show uses magic in a few different ways. First Unicorn (alicorn magic, other pony magic), the magic in and from the Elements of Harmony, and finally the magic of Friendship. Now those things are all closely aligned and may even be considered synonyms. Star Swirl's spell was her test or doctorate as you put it, but that just means she finished that phase of her studies.

 

Princess Celestia: Since you've come to Ponyville, you've displayed the charity, compassion, devotion, integrity, optimism, and of course, the leadership of a true princess.

 

Twilight has all those elements plus magic, so I gusss we are both right in the end. She will be the Princess of the Magic of Friendship.
