gaming Which game got the best lore/most interresting universe?

The title pretty much says it all, which game do you feel like have the most interesting/comprehensive/best lore and why?

I think the Warcraft lore is the best one, few other games got so many sides fighting against each other, so many sides of god and evil and so many badass antagonists. It also got some very interesting characters that lies somewhere between good and evil and fight for their own causes rather than for moral ones (Illidan Stormrage, Lady Vashj, Kael'thas)

On second place would be The Elder Scrolls universe, I love the whole Deadra and Aedra god thing that's going there and the different demi-gods and races

I like Guild Wars lore quite a bit, just wish there were more books for it. I like the way the history is set up, and the way they used stuff from the first game in the second (through references and whatnot). I like the Elder Scrolls lore as well and the little bit of Warcraft lore I've dabbled in.

I havent played alot of RPG's like The Elder Scrolls but I do love the inFamous universe it just seems so awesome (if your a conduit). Having super powers would be amazing. I'm also a fan of the Jak & Daxter universe It seems fun. But the universe i'd want to live in the most (i know im breaking the rule but there were games pased on it) is the Star Wars universe (post-wars). to be able to freely explore the galexy far far away would be amazing.

I like Mass Effect lore. It's so detailed, though in some cases it falls a bit... short I guess, but I like all the info you can get on the races, their history, info on the enemy and even the history of the humans. It's such a lore rich world.

The Elder Scrolls is another one, though I kinda got annoyed when trying to read information, only to find same info, same books all the time (at least in Skyrim) and in some cases it got confusing (or I wasn't able to follow). It's still quite rich.

I've always enjoyed the lore of Final Fantasy Tactics (BECUZ ITS MY FAVORITE GAME). Ivalice is a really interesting world and the mythology of the zodiac stuff is great.

Kingdom Hearts lore is just massive in a good way. There's so much it has to offer and it makes being a fan of the game really worthwhile.

Jak n Daxter is great. I love all the precursor stuff. The oracles we're always such a neat concept and I loved finding them in the game. The idea behind eco is just genius and I love how they expanded on it and introduced light and dark eco as usable in the later games.

and of course. ZELDA FTW! I mean come on what game series comes close as far as the universe of Hyrule? Yes I am biased but COME ON I DON'T EVEN GOTTA EXPLAIN YO.

My personal favorite must be... Warcraft since it all started from one game to 4 not counting expansions, why i like it is a different story though i personally like it because of the indepth characters like Chen Stormstout helping others that need help... Even baddies like the orcs though that was because of Thrall it still make a great lore in game and in charcter... Lemme take one for example, Arthas Menethil son of (Forgot) Menethil he raised up in Lordaeron and was the crown prince for the throne of it, when he grew up he met Jaina Proudmoore in his childhood befriending her meeting her in his future life made them both happy may i say but there is one thing they just didnt trust eachother anymore since they dont know how the other one feels about them (Jaina couldnt trust arthas plans alot and love him so does arthas... But other way around) So it all comes up to this *insert pic of Froustmourne* this is the twist in his life if he ignored it and fleed he would die but when he did he survived taking away his friends.

Second must be Spore since you make your own lore.

Technically not a video game, but in my opinion Warhammer 40,000 (The setting that pretty much defined grimdark) has the best lore just because there is so much of it.  Hundreds of books and quite a few games (video, roleplay and tabletop wargames).

Each faction is so different from eachother too: You have the Imperium of Man: a massive, human, xenophobic empire that is slowly crumbling away, driven on by its religious zeal and faith. The Necrons: a race of terminator esque robots that have lain dormant for millions of years. The Tyranids: (think Zerg from Starcraft, only on a much larger scale), a swarm of Locust like aliens from beyond the known galaxy, devouring everything in their path. The Tau empire: A collective of species that fight for one sole purpose, the greater good.

There are other factions too: The Eldar (space elves), Chaos Leigons, Imperial Guard, Sisters of Battle, the Space Marines, the Orks, the Chaos Space Marines and the Dark Eldar.

Ponified Chaos Space Marine (Chaos Space Mareine):

Warhammer 40,000 trumps them all. Much of the story is told through 'Imperial reports' Inquisitors reporting their investigations, army commanders reporting the status of warzones, transcripts of insane babble made by poor saps that saw something that caused them to go crazy, etc. The ways in which 40k conveys its storyline are ingenious. 40k lore is also quite deep and layered, enough to keep any lore hound busy for sometime. There are times when you can encounter contradictions in the lore, but 40k actually has a pretty compelling method for explaining any inconsistancies, usually by coming out and saying 'we're not sure what really happened that day, as there are differing accounts.' Plus the nature of the Warp being a place where the laws of time and physics don't apply makes pretty much anything possible.

Pumkin. Hands down the greatest back story in existence, the epic quest of a noble Pumpkin on his lunch break.

Give me the salt!

I'm really happy for you guys, and I'mma let you finish, but Pong has the best lore of all time. OF ALL TIME.

Just.... The battle between the two sides, the chaos and uncertainty of the middle ball, the unflinching determination of the paddles... It's wonderful.

Also, the characters are just amazing in every way, especially when it comes to backstory. I find the fact that 2 white, regular paddles got in a conflict and decided to settle it in a pong game, so deep and mindblowing

Fallout's lore. It's incredibly exciting, interesting, and rather depressing. It's also incredibly deep and in-depth, and can drag on forever. Read this to see what I'm talking about.

Halo has the best by far. The whole fact that the entire war between the humans and Covenant was caused by a lie. Also, the Flood has an interesting back story and a very intimate explanation of how they work. Halo has a very well built story and universe in general, it's too bad that it's not very appreciated. The books lend it most of it's amazing story.

I particularly like how the gravemind works, since the infection forms infecting a host transfers all of the useful knowledge to the gravemind and clears their mind. I particularly like how this sequence was portrayed in the terminal on Keyes in the Halo CE Anniversary game.

I'm not going to link to it since it's NSFW due to some violence, but just look up Keyes Terminal.

It's sad, really. How he slowly forgets even his name.

This marks the first time in history someone played Halo for the lore and story than to "pwn n00bs"

I'm a major Halo fan, I play it purely for the story behind it, honestly. The combination of the soundtrack and story make it an emotionally powerful series, truly.

I cried during the terminal on Keyes on the anniversary edition.

Never quite looked at it that way. I must try it sometime. And nice to see I'm not the only one who cries at video games (Fable III... Walter... Oh lord...)

I dunno, to be honest I don't normally do a whole lot of reading in video games for whatever reason, but I have done a bit of it in Skyrim and the lore for the Elder scrolls series overall is quite immense. I honestly doubt I'll ever read all the books :P.(Considering how I've hardly read any yet.) Still it seems so detailed.

Good game backstories and lore is awesome though, it makes everything feel real and not just, You've been placed here, who cares why or what happened in the past, now is now and thats all that matters. While that sometimes works, most of the time its better to have good lore.

but yeah i have to say Elder scrolls, seeing as I never payed much attention to other games lore's, and I really haven't spent any time hardly in Elder scrolls lore anyways.

It's funny because the bestiary basically associates the Flood with socialism on some levels.

I always found it funny that the Bestiary says that the Flood are "utopian socialist ideal as there is no wealth, no poverty, no want, no crime, and no disease; every individual works for the advancement of the Flood as a whole"

Metroid Prime 1 and 2(plus some of 3)- you can scan things in the world and get backstory and lore on what happened to the ravaged planets you explore before you came to them, very cool stuff. I say only some of 3 because only Elysia and the Ghost Ship had any great lore. Can't believe no one else mentioned them, no game does lore quite the same way or as well as the Prime games do. ;)

I really like the warcraft lore even though I don't know that much.  Other games stories that I love are Kingdom Hearts, and Fire Emblem games have an amazing scope and story as well although many take place in different universes.  Metroid is another favorite albeit short.

And maybe my favorite of all is Tales of Symphonia

I have to say, I'm all for lore in games; it absorbs me so much. But when faced with this question, my first response was: "UUUHHH"

I cannot name a game off the top of my head, because as soon as I do, another pops in there, and I'm left curled up on the floor with my best friends; Whiskey and Indecision.

I think the elder scrolls has the best lore & universe it's just so rich with content. Halo and mass effect also have a really good detailed lore and universe but i still think elder scrolls lore & universe is the best :P
