Anyone here big into IT stuff (servers, networking, etc)?

I am.

For example, I am making an uptime checking website that checks from 2 locations in the USA and 1 location in Germany. If you want to see it, go to http://www.cloudystatus.com/main/. It's powered totally off of OpenVZ-powered VPS servers, and is free to use. Speaking of that, what's your favorite virtualization technology (VMWare, VirtualBox, OpenVZ, Xen, KVM, etc)?

Wow that site is cool smile.png

I'm kind of into IT a bit, I make my own pc's (thought admittedly I get some help from others although I could do it myself) and I'm currently in the process of getting parts for a new one tongue.png!

Can i just ask, how did you get into IT?

I've been a computer guy all my life, but I got into it more when I bought a VPS from a company known as Ubiquity Servers, and man was it expensive ($19/mo), but I loved it. :)

I'm intending to build my own PC once I get into college, as a little side project. Budget £1k, pretty much 100% of which is coming out of my life-savings.

My budget for CloudyStatus is around $100 a year predicted. I currently pay $5 for a VPS in Atlanta, $2 to 7 for a VPS in Phoenix (unknown price yet), and 2 Euros for a VPS in Germany.

The budget is that high incase of bandwidth overages (since the VPSes are limited to 1TB or more monthly bandwidth), new servers, and/or other updates :P

I'm into IT stuff...

I've built computers, servers, and many other things. I was in a Computer Maintenance class during my last two years of high school, and was an intern in the Lutron Electronics IT department for 2 years.

I mostly enjoy working on the software side of things though. Typically, computer hardware is pretty cross compatible (Like, I can remove the graphics card from my computer and put it in the one in the living room easily, and I'm saying that within reason of course--DDR2 memory doesn't fit in a DDR1 slot, and isn't compatible.) but software can be a real pain to work with. I enjoy solving compatibility problems because it feels good.

I've fried several computers in my life, and am mostly self-taught, and I do repairs for friends and co-workers for pretty decent rates--nothing at all, I just ask to get paid back for parts, I ask them to pay me what they feel the service is worth, it helps to build a portfolio and references!
