My little theories: Why Rarity was managing the weather in Magical Mystery Cure

Pony Of The Month

Recommended Posts

Everyone thinks that this was a plot hole. They say things like "Isn't Rainbow's talent flying? Why is Rarity managing the weather? Shouldn't she be trying to fly?

Well here's my theory: Rarity wasn't trying to fly because she doesn't have wings.

Just kidding! laugh.png

Here's my real theory: Rainbow Dash has 2 talents, and her cutie mark represents both of them. The cloud represents her weather abilities, and the rainbow colored lightning bolt represents her flying abilities.

"But Rainbow Dash got her cutie mark after doing a sonic rainboom, while she was FLYING!"

Yes, she did get her cutie mark after performing a sonic rainboom. But think about it. It wasn't just a trick. It affected the lives of 5 other ponies. If it could do that, who's to say it didn't have an affect on the weather? It was definitely powerful enough to curl pinkie's hair, so how could you say that it has no affect on the weather? So Rainbow performed two talents at once, thus received a cutie mark that represents both of her talents.

"Since when could ponies have more than one talent?"

Since 5000 B.C (Before Celestia)

But in all seriousness, there is nothing in the show that implies that ponies can have only one talent.

"But if Rainbow has two talents, why is Rarity only attempting to do one of them?"

Because she doesn't have wings?

"Than why not give Rainbow's cutie mark to Fluttershy?"

That's a good question. Maybe Fluttershy could have Rainbow's cutie mark, and attempt to fly like Rainbow Dash. But maybe the writers didn't want to kill off Fluttershy...?

That's all I've got. I knew someone would inevitably ask that question if I didn't answer it so I had to get it out of the way somehow.

So what do you think of this theory?

Hearth Warmings' Eve showed us that the unicorns controlled the sun and moon way back when, while pegasi controlled the weather. Since Rarity got the cutie mark of not only a pegasus, but a pegasus whose job it is to literally bust clouds for a living, I think it was inevitable that Rarity got the talent of using her magic to control weather :3

To be honest, I never really gave much thought to it. Rainbow Dash does manage the weather, and I guess that's one of her talents since she seems to be really good at it. It just makes sense that Rarity would try that as well, although I do suppose they could've had her trying to pull off cool tricks and failing or trying to make herself go faster or failing.

I think it's just what they decided to go with, no big deal.

To be honest, it really isn't a big deal. The only reason I came up with this theory is that people were pointing to this part of the episode and calling it a flaw and a "plot hole." I decided to come up with a good explanation so that not only I would feel better about it, but other people would to.

Maybe if I come up with a theory for why the apples didn't notice that Pinkie Pie was working at Sweet Apple Acres, I'll talk about that too.

Well, you have a point there, it's always nice to have a good explanation you can fall back on when you need it, even if it's for something as minor as this.

I don't see how the apples didn't notice Pinkie was working there... after all, she was trying to knock them out of the trees!

I fail to see how Rarity having Rainbow Dash's cutie mark is a plot hole.

Think about, which character's special talent would it be funnier to see Rarity have.

She's capable of being organised, and does a lot of work. This negates Applejack's cutie mark.

She handles her customers well and is generous (duh), so she'd get along well with the animals of Fluttershy's cottage.

She isn't a crowd pleasing funny-mare, but she is fantastic in the spotlight. So Pinkie's is a no.

The weather cannot be made pretty, it is a powerful force of nature that doesn't operate by simple patterns. No (successful) fashion show ever had 'Weather' as its main theme, etc.

And she obviously couldn't have Twilight's, for narrative reasons.

All in all, It's not a case of how she'd operate with Rainbow Dash's Cutie Mark, it's a case of how much she'd struggle with it. Hence, she has Rainbow Dash's Cutie Mark.

(ALSO; she controlled the weather by magic, something that Applejack/Pinkie Pie couldn't do. Fluttershy got Pinkie's Cutie Mark, so Rarity was the only remaining character that made logical sense to give the Mark to.)

Another thing I heard is that, Twilight asked to manage the clouds, and Rainbow said she needed wings, so how could Rarity manage the clouds? She is a unicorn like Twilight (who apparently is now an alicorn)!

I don't think it was a plot hole. I think it comes down, to a degree, to some ponies really disliking Magical Mystery Cure and being very nitpicking. Nothing wrong with talking about plot issues, since that's what we do and it's fun, but in this case it was driven by angst. I think the major force were Rainbow Dash fans who were upset by the implication that weather was RD's only density and flying (Wonderbollts) was not really discussed. Rarity doing the weather just made sense as another pony said.

It's quite possible, although I'm not sure if there's anything else in the series that implies that a cutie mark can simultaneously represent two talents. I'm not sure if I buy it. Honestly, I view the other members of the weather team not ever taking Rarity aside and going "This isn't your job and you're kind of wrecking everything, leave this to us." as just as big of a plot hole.

Actually, while it may not be common, it is entirely possible for Unicorns to control the weather. Trixie did it in both of her appearances. Twilight may or may not be capable of it, but in any case she was unable to in Winter Wrap Up because magic was forbidden.

I think it comes down to people missing key words in the song and the point of the episode as a whole. When I listen to What my Cutie Mark is Telling Me this line in particular stands out "It's got to be my destiny, and its what my cutie mark is telling me." They didn't just switch cutie marks they switched destinies. The entire life paths of the ponies was magically switched including memories, their homes, and occupations. What was Rainbow Dash's occupation at the time of the switch? She was Ponyville's weather manager. The ponies believed it was what they were meant to do at the time a belief that was reinforced by the cutie marks they had. Also remember that Rainbow's talent is the reason she is good at her current job. In the pilot episode she cleared the sky in ten seconds flat. The very introduction the audience had to her talent was introduced through her job as a weather manager. In Magical Mystery Cure when Rainbow is reconnecting with her element and destiny she again clears the sky in ten seconds flat. Whilst Rainbows ultimate destiny may be among the Wonderbolts, her position in ponyville is a huge part of that destiny and her life Her talent also is a really major part of all of that.

I would say that it has been shown that a ponies talent can mean more than one thing or just have a deeper meaning than even the pony knows. Twilights talent is magic as such she is excellent at magic. For the earlier portion of her life she thought that solely meant studying the application of magic and its effects, she never guessed it had anything to do with friendship. In the end however it is apparent she never would have grasped the true nature of her magic had she not realized the importance of friendship. Rainbow's too has a deeper meaning which I think is her connection to loyalty. Think about how she got her cutie mark to begin with, she was "defending Fluttershy's honor". The way she got her cutie mark was through a demonstration of loyalty to Fluttershy. All of the main six most likely have such a deeper connection and meaning. Perhaps Twilight isnt the only one of the main six that will become an alicorn. Not that I think that likely but its possible.

Regaurding your point about the connection between the rainboom and weather. Yeah forget affecting the weather are rainbows themselves not considered an aspect of weather, so yeah the rainboom is an extreme magical weather effect. What makes it more impressive in that world is that we have seen that rainbows are produced or at the very least have to be treated in a factory by pegasi before being ready. Yet Rainbow Dash is capable of creating them on demand in a spectacular fashion.
