I would have to say Snake/John Marston/Nathan Hale/Cortez because of their sheer dedication and sacrifice.

I'm going to add a villain here because he needs more recognition. Andrew Ryan, founder of Rapture. Him and his awesome speeches and cold way of thinking. God, yes.

I was thinking about this recently and when I posted last I forgot all about Akuma from Street fighter, and Beatrix from Final Fantasy 9! Villains and side characters need some love too right :P

Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid. Most intense story behind a player to date. Emotional as it is he never sheds a tear, lost everything he has ever had. Or tryed to get, in his whole life. Not to mention he is a clone, made for only combat, no family, with accelerated aging to boot. A life can't get much worse.

Miles 'Tails' Prower, from the Sonic the Hedgehog series. He's adorable as all hell, smart, has a heart of gold, and has a ton of potential as a character. He's the primary reason I got into Sonic all those years back...

Samus Aran from the Metroid games. She went through so much in her past and still breaks a leg to clean up the mistakes of others to make the galaxy a better place. :P

I will try to be as vague as possible to avoid any major spoilers from Xenogears and Tales of Vesperia.

Posted ImageFei Fong Wong from Xenogears is probably the most complex character I have ever seen in a video game. Throughout the entire game he is constantly at conflict with himself and his own personal desires and apprehensions, while at the same time being unwillingly swept up in a much larger struggle that shakes the entire foundations of the world. How is that for being vague enough without giving away any spoilers?

Posted Image Yuri Lowell from Tales of Vesperia is one of the most interesting protagonists I have seen in a long time, and it is mostly because of the stark contrasts between him and his closest friend, Flynn. Most games would have you playing Flynn -- a well respected knight of unshakable integrity, who serves his country to protect its citizens and change his country for the better, preferably without any bloodshed and within the means of the law. Instead, you play as Yuri, who has the exact same ideals as Flynn, but pursues those ideals in a completely different manner. He has no problems circumventing the law in order to protect the less-priveleged -- like a Robin Hood so to speak. He would even bloody his own hands to punish the corrupt politicians he sees as destroying his country when the law fails to make them answer for their crimes. This dynamic between Flynn and Yuri causes them to clash from time to time, yet they each rely on the other to do what they cannot.

I'm just no good at writing signatures. Coming up with words is like... really hard.

However, you should read The Espelancer Chronicles: a blog detailing my preparations leading up to and my experiences studying at The Yamasa Institute in Okazaki, Japan (in the Aichi prefecture outside of Nagoya) for a 1-month SILAC course from July 16 - August 16, 2012.
