How do the ponie's parents name them?

Seriously, this is a question I've been thinking about way to much. I mean, the ponies names are (mostly) based off of their special talents, so how do their parents know what their going to be good at? And I'm sorry if this is explained in one of the episodes, I haven't watched them all yet.

Honestly I don't know any ponies named after there special talents but I've known te parents to name there kid either something inherited like the Apple Family,or something similar to there own name Dusk Shine and Twilight Sparkle the first names are both times of day.

Alright, some ponies.  Like Vinyl Scratch, did her parents know she was gonna that she was destined to be a DJ? Or Rainbow Dash, that kind of points to racing.

What about Mayor Mare's name? How did her parents know she was going to be a mayor? That confuses me.   Maybe her name before was "Modern Mare" or "Mystic Mare" or something like that. But then, when she became mayor of Ponyville, her name was legally changed to "Mayor Mare". That's just what I'm guessing.

Think logically before you found mlp and you heard the words Vinyl Scratch you wouldn't instantly say "DJ"

Rainbow Dash well she was called Rainbow for obvious reasons and Dash probably because the words fit.

Or, some of the ponies' names could be based off their personality, like The Smurfs. Vinyl's parents named her Vinyl Scratch maybe because she was always interested in electronic-type music when she was a filly. And maybe Mayor Mare got her name because she liked to pretend to give speeches and run a city when she was playing. Her parents must've thought she would fit good for a mayor or any other politician, so they named her "Mayor Mare".

Scratching vinyls is often associated with "DJ", so it would be logical to assume "DJ" from the name "Vinyl Scratch."

 

OT:

I'm not quite sure. Perhaps the parent's wait a bit after the foal is born before naming them. But this is probably false as Mr. and Mrs. Cake named their foals as soon as they were born. Perhaps they name them after a common skill in that pony's family tree. Or maybe Celestia tells the parent's what they should name their foal as she may know the future talents of the foal. The parents can then decide to use the name given to them by Celestia or come up with something themselves.

 

Another theory would be this. In our world, names have different meanings. Parents often pick names with meanings they want their child to have. Perhaps the parents in Equestria name their foal based on what kind of talents they want or think their foal is going to have.

Pony names can be oddly prophetic, but most of the times the names are only tangentially related anyway.

 

For example, Apple Bloom. She is part of the apple family, so her name is apple-related. But it is heavily implied that her special talent isn't even in apple farming.

 

I think, given the heavy prevalence of magic in the universe, it's possible that when parents name their foal they are just suddenly hit with a magically induced epiphany as to what their name is.

I've always theorized that the parents never actually name their children themselves, but rather their names "come to them" by magic,perhaps by whatever forces produce their cutie marks.  But it's not always based on their special talent, it could be based on their appearance (Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash) or personality (Fluttershy).

I agree, this is a bit strange. I mean, Diamond Tiara? Come ON! Or Scootaloo. Even though she hasn't gotten her cutie mark yet, it's heavily implied that riding her scooter and other cool motor tricks in her special talent. I like the idea that GaleFenrir had with the magical epiphany. Or the one that Blue Moon had about Celestia telling the parents what to name the child. But, let's all agree. Hasbro has already given us the answer. Season 3, Episode 14, of course. Just like Silverhoof pointed out.

Ahaha I've been thinking exactly the same thing as you! Not all the pony names are like their special talents, like Pinkie Pie for example, that name doesn't sound like balloons. XD

As for the other names like Twilight Sparkle or Rainbow Dash that remind me of their cutie marks, I have no idea. I guess their parents choose pretty names for their children and it is always destined to have something to do with their special talent. That's all I can say!

My theory is that their names have something in common with their ancestors and then they gradually start changing word for word. Let's say that the father's name was Rainbow Bolt and the mother's name was Violet Dash. Just mix a couple of their own names in and then that's how Rainbow Dash could of gotten her name xP
