Ghost Stories, Folklore, Legends and the Generally Supernatural

I love paranormal stuff, although I've never had any personal experiences.  Does anyone here watch Ghost Adventures on Travel Channel by any chance?  I love that show, it's just the way they do their investigations, like how they show evidence the second they catch it instead of waiting until the end.  I also find them the most convincing paranormal investigation show, it just seems the most real to me.  I also like My Ghost Story and My Ghost Story, Caught on Camera on Bio.

@ Rolls Royce I love that show! :)

I went on a ghost hunting trip with my sister a few months ago to a haunted jail. There was a large crowd there and my sister and I were split into groups we were accompanied by psychics in the jail cells I experienced things like unexplained tapping noises and I even managed to catch a glimpse of a spirit trying to manifest itself by seeing an emerald green flash of light. At the end of the session we did table tipping and we managed to get the table to move!

Oh I have had one other experience in San Antonio on the ghost tracks. What supposedly happened is that a school bus filled with kids, stalled on the train tracks and was struck by a train killing everyone onboard but there is no proof of this ever happening but if you put your car in neutral on the stop lines, your car will start rolling forward uphill over the tracks and stop on the other side. If you want to see it just youtube "San Antonio ghost tracks".

This one isn't about me but my grandfather a long time ago. Back then my grandfather worked as a night guardsman at a mill and worked from about 5PM to 5AM. When he arrived for work one day he saw a friend of his and asked if he wanted to have lunch together and he said yes so around midnight he had lunch with his friend. But the next day my grandfather was told that his friend had died from a heat attack the day earlier and when he asked when he died he was told he had been taken to the morgue at 8pm. So my grandfather had lunch with a ghost.

I remember this time when my sister made a photo of her friend and herself on vacation and when she took the photo there was another person standing next to her. She says she made the photo in the women's restroom and her friend claims so too. So if what she said is true then that's some crazy shit and she actually captured some paranormal stuff right there. She also still has the photo I think.

I love looking into paranormal stuff. Any other /x/-philes here?

Anyway, my experiences are just seeing shadow things.

Can you upload it, and did the person look weird or anything?

As a kid that lived in a neighborhood between two cemeteries, there is no doubt in my belief about paranormal things. Actually, something paranormal happened to me today, my friends and I had a ghost tracker and we picked up a spirit that my friend said was dangerous and malicious. Well, when I walked back to my house after being with them, I went into the house and the TV screen was all black and white. I asked my dad what happened and he said "I don't know, that just happened when you walked in". It eventually went back to normal, but still... It was creepy. Though it's not the first time something like this happened to me.

I like reading these accounts that you all had. I wish I could add, oh wait I do kinda have one I guess. After my grandfather printed off some pictures of a family party we looked at them. To the right of my dad's head is a shape that kinda faintly resembles a skull. If you use a magnify glass you can see the nose socket and eye sockets and it looks quite creepy.

My dog that died last summer still walks around the house as a ghost. She really doesn't cause any trouble though. She just is usually in my upstairs laying down or walking, nothing real special.

Ah ha ha ha...

I have drawings of demons and stuff, or amnesia kind of creepy stuff like that when I have to vent out some thoughts. But, otherwise, I used to be obsessed with Chupacabras. My friend and I used to always be afraid to go outside in the High Desert forest because we thought we would see glowing red eyes running across the horizon, and the horses around the house I would stay at would neigh whenever we thought so. XD

okay so here's my story...

on a couple of occasions i have had this experience of being between sleep and wakefulness. Everytime i always felt like i couldn't move, talk, or even scream. it was like i was being held down and i could feel hands pushing down on me or something. on one occasion i was able to move a little bit only to be shoved back down on my back and pinned. now the scariest part is on seperate occasions, i had heard either a high pitched growl-scream beside me or heard a woman or maybe a young man/ little boy whispering something messed up in my ear. i did my research and science calls it sleep paralysis where you linger between sleep and awake and have strange hallucinations and feelings of terror and helplessness. but, ancient cultures called this the Hag Attack. the Hag being like a night spirit that terrorizes sleepers, particularly men, and is often associated with a sucubus or the demoness, Lilith.

it hasn't happened lately, but i can tell you it was prolly the most terrifying moment in my entire life. if anyone can relate to this... gimme your input and maybe a solution for if it ever happens again. but, in the meantime share your stories of your own experiences.

Yep, that's sleep Paralysis.

It's most often caused by an irregular sleeping pattern, me for instance, i'd stay up some nights during 8th grade, sleep early the next day, pretty much my sleep schedule was a mess, once when i woke up in the afternoon i couldn't move, i got pretty scared, my dog jumped on top of me and i managed to wake up entirely, it occurred many times, in school at home, at night, it doesn't happen as often anymore, it happened sometime last week again though.

Anyways, you just need a constant sleeping schedule and you should be alright.

I can agree with

I believe in spirits, energies and other entities/occurrences like that. As for "ghosts"... not so much, mainly because the term is used so bloody loosely its hard to define what exactly it is lol from what it looks like, to what it does and how it behaves...

or

I don't think Ghosts are real in the traditional sense of these ethereal beings that dawdle about and try to scare people, but I do understand that there is a supernatural reality around us that is of great importance, even if it is difficult to imagine and harder-still to grasp.

even

Ghosts are just energy. This energy may be good or bad and it takes the form of orbs.

as well as

there is something beyond us that we as humans can't comprehend yet.

(emphasis on "yet")

I once recall saying on another forums that I "believe in ghosts, but not as we usually mean it". I find them unlikely to be the souls of the dead, but I find the usual "rational" explanations too... loose, and generic.

-

I don't see any reason to believe that our consciousness is anymore than chemicals interacting in our brains, when the brain ceases to function, it's gone.

There's actually proof that the mind and consciousness extends way beyond the brain, and forms fields closely tied with the brains but not limited to them. I've made a presentation about a book on the subject, it explains how they're being very methodical and mercilessly critical of their own results.

To be more precise, there were double blind experiments (to avoid bias due to Observer's effect) and statistical analyses (to make sure coincidence was unlikely enough). In fact, even before doing trials, just going through cases of telepathy or precognition... they did a lot of sorting and left out anything (really ANYTHING) that can be remotely explained rationally (without resorting to the "attention-whoring lies" stuff many people automatically go for).

And in both cases, they were CONSTANTLY LOOKING FOR AND TESTING RATIONAL EXPLANATIONS.

They aren't illusionists. They aren't priests.

They aren't charlatans, because skeptics replicate the experiments exactly, obtaining the exact same results, but more often than not refusing to analyze them and maintaining their position against it.

They are scientists. Nobody's feelings about their theories will ever change that fact.

Sadly, a huge majority of the scientific community is too scared to accept this.

Their reactions are typically (replace "ghosts" with other things like "precognition", "telepathy", or "mental fields")

There's zero concrete proof [...] Every single ghost story can be explained.

and

When something unexplainable happens, we look for an immediate answer without resorting to logic, and making things like ghost stories up.

Not saying these explanations are nonsense (there ARE such cases, and the researchers of this subject know that well).

They're just thrown about whenever "scientists" don't like the results of such experiments. Oh, and without ever reading the articles or listening to the lectures, in which case they would've discovered that their "explanation" had already been tested and ruled out. They really are used exclusively

for the sake of my sanity and to keep everything logical

if you replace "logical" with "rationalistic and comforting".

People often forget

Science is the study of the known world, so it goes to reason that there are some things that science cannot, at this point, cover. Ghosts and demons, angels and and all that fun stuff, if they existed, would still be in the realm off the unknown, simply because science has not found a way to interact with them yet.

So saying 'science doesn't agree' is foolish, because science cannot know everything immediately.

There was a time when science did not know about the microscopic world. Does that mean it didn't exist? No! Science just couldn't interact with it at the time!

and

There are scientific domains that are untouchable at our current level of sophistication, particularly with regard to things that are otherwise hidden from our view such as the other 6/7 dimensions that string theory demands exist, as well as the various 'hidden reality' theories that are a part of many mainstream theories.

In other words: "it can't be detected" and "there's a rational (sweeping) explanation" does NOT mean something isn't real. Shitheads in that other forums stirred a lot of drama because they wouldn't open their eyes to this.

So, when they say "it simply doesn't exist", what they really mean is

I don't WANT them to exist. Anything supernatural that science can't explain, like ghosts, etc, SHOULD NOT exist, in my opinion

----------------------------------------

My opinion of ghosts, is that they may be impressions (like photos or videos) left behind by people's mental fields. Like a dent in a wall left by a strong impact, you "see" a mark somewhere, only since you're taught to ignore it, you experience your interpretation of what might've left that mark.

Now poltergeists, may be hard to explain in this manner.

Another possibility would explain both "sensings" (sighting, sound, touch) and physical events (aforementioned poltergeists, sometimes even hurting the living), and that's a parallel universe. There was an episode in Fringe about this, which is a fictional series of course, but makes you think... what if?

Out of curiosity, do any of you guys watch any of the paranormal shows on Syfy, how many of those do you think are actually real, and approve of their methods?

I prefer the ones that use that the "disprove whatever you can so the remaining evidence is that much stronger" style. Jumping to conclusions does nothing make you look look like a idiot, along with everyone else that believes.

I really like Ghost Hunters though, I have seasons 1, 2, and 4 on DVD.

I love paranormal stories and local folklore and legends.  I'd like to hear of some from the community here.  It can be any tale from personal experience, or a friend you know, or something passed down about a place in town, or the region you're in.  It can be little superstitious quips, or just a freaky event, or a lengthy in depth description.

Your thread, along with several others dedicated to the same topic of personal and local paranormal experiences, have been merged. Just letting you know. If you haven't done it before, please try running a search of existing topics to see if there's one that matches your idea before you create a new one.

Exactly, and psi researchers who do that (same thing I meant by being "mercilessly critical of their own results") get all my praise. Edited by Feather Spiral

I have sleep paralysis on occasion and I can see these shadows talking and they even try to slip into bed with me and wrap their arms around me. They sound like people I know such as my husband but I know they're not. I usually start praying really hard because I'm a Christian, and I will instantly wake up after I do this. I've also been assaulted by these things and shook violently by them. I believe their demonic because this has happened several times and usually does once every 2-3 months.

In the city where I live, Covina. There is a tunnel called Zelda's Tunnel. Zelda's is supposed to be haunted since some girl was sacrificed there if I remember correctly. In the tunnel you hear weird noises, it's pitch black inside, and it smells like shit.

Just saying this real quick, if there is already a topic about this, sorry, never saw it.

Anyways, do you believe in ghosts? I somewhat do, in a way.

I always think I see shadowy figures, ect.

So, do you believe?

Nope. I don't and I have never done so either. Actually, I don't really believe in anything paranormal. I think it's quite stupid and well I facepalm every time some relatives of mine  or family members are talking about the subject. I remember once when my aunt was telling how she had experienced some paranormal stuff. I said I didn't believe her and she got all annoyed and stuff. I got even more annoyed. haha
