Why were the CMC in High School?

I noticed this a few times. Why were they all in the school when in reality, they were too young? THEY MUST BE SMARTS. Diamond and Silver Spoon don't appear to be bullies...at least there.

Same reason Twilight and the rest of the Mane 6 were in high school when in the pony world they're all homeowning adults who work/own their own businesses. And Cheerilee is older than all of them and she's normally the same age. They're all age-modified in that world, apparently.

Though the CMC, DT/SS, and (arguably) Snips/Snails at least were depicted as clearly younger than the others, so they were probably freshmen whereas the Mane 6 were seniors.

Because it's an alternate universe, it's not supposed to exactly match Equestria. Plus they had to make all the characters high school students because the movie takes place in a high school.

I think it’s just down to the entire film in the human world being set in a high school: so if the CMCs were to make an appearance it would be impossible any other way than them being students at the school. They weren’t specific about which country this human world was in, it could be anywhere so it could have had different age groups for high school in that place

Youngest looking freshmen. Just saying. I can't say I seen freshmen that young...{I can't attest to that since last year I was in tenth grade and the freshmen looked rather short.} But that's still impossible...being that DT is in Twilight's class...{and that I can SEE the Mane 6 in highschool, but I'm assuming they don't have that in Equestria since they really don't need it after you learned basics.}

Some schools are massive in the sense there are different schools for different age groups. I'd wager that the high school in Equestria Girls is merely the high school division of a much bigger school which also includes lower and middle schools. I haven't seen Equestria Girls (yet) so do forgive me if my guess is completely off, but it would explain the presence of the CMC.

In small communities (like RL-versions of ponyville), sometimes there is just one school for all grades. K-12. There's a school a few counties away that operates like that, so maybe that's a possibility...? I really don't know.

It seems the producer/director wanted to squeeze in as many characters as possible (Vinyl, Photo Finish, even Derpy). I have a few guesses as to why this is.

  • Maybe they want to leave themselves an opportunity produce different pony dolls besides mane six if their line is successful
  • they wanted to appeal to their loyal fans (bronies and children alike) with the appearances of background/non-mane-6 ponies (favorite ponies and all that).
  • Characters we already know were thrown in to strengthen the correlations between the show and movie, and the ones between Equestria/Ponyville and Canterlot High.

Anyway, I didn't mind the characters. I love them in the show so it was nice seeing they made it to the movie despite not playing a key role in the storyline

I suppose you mean in Equestria Girls, right? I think it is just because they wanted to fit in as many recognizable characters as possible for us into the movie to make it cooler/funnier. Yeah that's pretty much the only reason.

But they shouldn't be in high school, no.

It was kind of odd how university like the school was. I was almost certain it wasn't a high school, but a college or university until I heard the high school portion. I doubt that its K-12, most of them look right around the ages they should be while in highschool. Or maybe, they didn't show a lot? I can't imagine little girls living at the school like how it was hinted. I was PRETTY certain it was a college....

Topic moved to the Equestria Girls subforum, as it seems to concern the movie far more than the show.

My best guess is that they wanted to cram as many characters into the movie as possible and didn't feel that it would be complete without the CMC. I'm not sure if the Mane Six are necessarily the right age to be in high school either anyway, and it it was their senior year, Big Macintosh should probably have graduated by then. I don't think the movie placed a huge amount of importance on these details.

Well, It's still not clear how ponies age. A pony could be a foal at four and an adult by six. Also, My theory for the CMC and Co. is that they are all 13-15, and beginning the journey through puberty as they are in Equestria, and this would be the age they would be experiencing that as humans. The Mane six are adults in both Equestria and the human world, ranging in age from 17-19 like normal high school seniors. Also, it never says Cheerilee is an actual teacher. She could have been a TA, and maybe in college while having a job at the high school. We also don't know HOW much older Big Mac is than AppleJack, and it's also very plausible that he was held back a grade or two, because let's be honest, Big Mac will always put his work before anything else. And while he's amazing and wise, he probably isn't the most academically adept.
Also, DT not a bully? Did you not see her land a square punch to Twilight's sweet flank?

Youngest looking freshmen. Just saying. I can't say I seen freshmen that young...

You sure about that? When I was in high school, it always seemed like each new batch of freshmen looked younger and younger every year. Even nowadays when I go to Taco Bell (where the high school kids like to hang out, for some reason), I can't help but think they ought to still be in junior high. I'm beginning to wonder if the government's releasing age-stunting chemicals in our water supply.

Whatever the case, it was probably just a case of "Eh, can't have an MLP movie without the CMC, gotta squeeze 'em in somewhere." That, and the whole underlying toy sale agenda that Hasbro always has. That's a thing, too.

Besides, it's not like the Mane 6 are even high school age to begin with, given all the canon evidence from the show (home ownership, careers, etc.), so if I'm willing to believe that this alternate universe de-agifies them, I'm willing to believe the CMC would be freshmen at their high school.

I guess they just wanted to put every recognizable character from the series there. Since the CMC are big characters, they wanted to put them in the movie to give people something to laugh about. Same with Cheerilee, if she went to school with Rarity as seen in Cutiemark Chronicles, she's the same age as Rarity. However since she's a teacher in the series they had to modify her age in the movie to make her a teacher. Since the CMC are kids, if they hadn't modified their ages, they wouldn't have been in the movie at all. So in order for them to show up, age modification was a must.

Didn't see this, I watched it on youtube ^^"

Or perhaps the ages for jobs or something is different. They wouldn't need a school life after the one they received unless its job related. ^^"

I suppose it could be the CMC are actually slightly older then I first predicted them as being.

However it could also be the fact its an alternate universe, and the actual age of any of the characters present in the highschool is irrelevant to the age of them in the pony world.

I think that because the highschool is where the movies set all the characters were made high school students. I suppose maybe they could've been brought along with someone else at the party though idk.

I don't think their age is consistent with their age in the pony world. I think of them as more like 10-11ish in the pony world.

People seem to forget that humans and ponies age and mature at different rates. Not to mention that time appears to flow differently in the human world from equestria. From the (pony) mane 5's point of view, twilight went into the mirror and returned sometime later that morning, while in the human world, she was there for about 3 days. It might have something to do with the fact that the sun and moon move naturally in the human world as opposed to equestria where celestia and luna move them. It makes sense that the pony's ages might not match up perfectly with their human counterparts. Plus, the CMC look to be the same age as the mane 5 do in the photo that twilight finds in the yearbook, and that was from when they were freshmen.

When Twilight looks at her friends' photo in the yearbook, they say that it was the "Freshmen School Fair", or something like that. In the picture, they all look about the same age as the CMC are in the movie. It would make sense that the CMC would be freshmen too, right?

What if the portal was somewhat time turning (lel, see what I did there?), and the alternate dimension it leads to, in this case, the human world, is a time warp where everyone is the same age, however in the Pony Realm, everybody is their distinct age?

If you consider that there is only one school and seemingly only one class in ponyville, it raises the question of just how old are the mane 6 anyway? It is plausible that the CMC were freshmen (I'm English, is that the correct word? :P) and the mane 6 were in their final year.

It's a parallel dimension, but that doesn't mean everything needs to be exactly the same. Perhaps everyone has different age in there, and Twilight got older/younger when she stepped through. As for the CMC, maybe they're just a little older in that world. Same goes for everyone else in that world.

Some high schools in real life have middle school grades along with 9-12 grades. Maybe Canterlot High was one of those schools, and the CMC are in 7th or 6th grade. Also, I thought that maybe a girl who attends the school could be eligible for Fall Formal Princess when you are in 8th grade.
