Going to be honest, I'm actually somewhat surprised by this list; usually I see Hurricane fluttershy sweeping the charts on most sites I visit, and its only mentioned a couple times here :/
Plus, MMC is rated much, MUCH higher than I'm used to.

1 &2. Return of harmony 1 and 2.
BEST. TWO PARTER.
This is what all two parters should strive to be. it has an enjoyable plot, great character interaction, and Discord, who is my favorite villain of the show due to being a troll.

The mane six all work as a team, there's equal focus on all of them, and they make sure to show they're all important in who they are.

 

3. Hurricane fluttershy.

LOVE this episode. Fluttershy's adorable with her fears, and you really gotta root hard for her. Additionally, this episode is one of my favorite dash showings, and I really wish they'd follow up on it: Showing dash as a leader is a great way to grow her as a character, and adds another dynamic to her.

 

4. Inspiration manifestation

Love this one. rarity is HILARIOUS as her drama queen self, she's even MORE hilarious when insane with magic, and spike is characterized incredibly well.

 

5. Cutie mark chronicles.
Ah yeah, one of the better ones. The mane six's stories are really well done, Twilight is ADORABLE jumping around shouting "yes" and the interconnected state of things is really nice.

 

6. Sonic rainboom

Old favorite, gotta love the sonic rainboom

7. Power ponies

A nice old fashioned action comedy episode.

 

8. Wonderbolt academy
Great to see some real development for dashy! THIS would have made a much better key episode than her ACTUAL key episode.

 

9. At the gala

The best finale of the show yet. Showed the mane six and their dreams, humorously subverted it, and had a great song.

 

10. Testing testing, 123

Dash's idiocy is both humorous and adorable at the same time, and Twilight's back to being her slightly b***y self., leading to some great moments, like her yelling "I'm not that tall!".

1 - Slice of life

For me, an episode has to either relate to me on some kind of level or be entertaining and/or funny for me to enjoy it, and while this episode was just fanservice for the fans, understanding all of the references (to my knowledge) combined with the humor was non-stop entertainment in my opinion, a solid 22 minutes of nothing but good times.

 

2 - Flight to the finish

I thought it was brave of Hasbro to have an episode about disabilities and the bullying that people have to deal with. It related to me a little, and I genuinely got goosebumps when Rainbow slammed the door open and sped through town with the crusaders behind her. The message of "Maybe you'll fly someday, and maybe you won't" I think was better than "Don't worry kiddo, just keep trying and you'll be flying in no time" which is what most of the episodes have in the end, a 100% positive message.

 

3 - Hurricane Fluttershy

Like flight to the finish, this episode was like a chapter right out of my life. Always being picked last for sports in school and then criticized because despite wanting to play, I was forced to, and even though I gave it my all to try and stop everyone yelling at me for the entire time, I just couldn't do anything about it. All the while, people on the other team(s) watching would laugh and shout stuff that you could call the opposite of confidence boosting. I didn't get the happy finish like Fluttershy did in this episode, but it spoke to me and made me feel better knowing others have been through the same.

 

4 - Twilight's kingdom

Initially my favourite episode when it came out, I remember losing my mind over it with a friend on skype who was also watching it. Really while the episode was good and everything, it all really just comes down to Twilight vs. Tirek. I couldn't take a guess as to how many times I've watched that scene, and say to people "Yeah I was MLP" Link them to that scene, and have them say "Listen, I refuse to watch the show, but I will admit, that was awesome." And they're right, that scene is awesome.

 

5 - Do princesses dream of magic sheep

The first half was decent at best I think, but as soon as the giant dream started, I couldn't take my eyes of the screen. I don't want to list all of the things that made that scene amazing, because I would literally have to list everything in that scene, but I will say it was nice to see so many throwbacks to previous episodes like power ponies as well as some new ones like filthy rich riding on bits and Scootaloo with giant wings. And can I just mention, it's gonna take something special to take over the cuteness crown from derpy's "Whoo" in this episode.

 

6 - Pinkie pride

The show has some great songs, and while Magical mystery cure did this first and ties with Filli Vanilli for the best title of an episode, Pinkie pride had, in my opinion, better songs, better pacing, and included Weird Al, which is an instant win. The live action scenes of Boneless and Gummy were an unexpected treat.

 

7 - Bats

I don't like applejack. Rarity I started to like during season 4, and the rest of the mane 6 I was already at least ok with from season 1 (depending on the pony) But I still dislike AJ. However, being an animal lover, I was conflicted as to who was in the right in this episode. While yes, a humane way to deal with the problem is the right thing which should mean Fluttershy, I thought what I might do if I had to deal with this problem. I wouldn't exterminate them or anything, but I wouldn't give them a part of my non-existent farm, and whatever I did do, I'd be angry all the while doing it, that's for sure. It was really odd to be rooting for my least favourite of the mane 6 over my number 1 favorite character in the entire show, but I wish there were more episodes like that. Also that song with the light and dark differences was kick ass.

 

8 - Pinkie apple pie

I know it was never officially revealed, but I consider that Pinkie and AJ are related, and I think Hasbro left it up to interpretation for 1 single reason. Imagine someone who is OK with lesbian relationships but not an incest relationship, so good on them for covering all bases with the no evidence for either route. Again, I'm not usually the biggest AJ fan, but I liked her in this episode and being an only child with next to no family conflict, it was cool to get an insight.

 

9 - Make new friends but keep discord

Best face of the season goes to Fluttershy and her two cakes story. The Smooze didn't act like I thought it would, but was awesome that way it was. I love treehugger as a character, also possibly my favorite cutie mark too. I dunno, this episode had alot of "Oh, that was cool" or "Oh, that was pretty funny" moments sprinkled in with Gala 2.0. And as much as I like discord, as soon as Maud said "You're the most basic of jokes" I was out of my seat like "OOOOOOOOOH HELL NO, YOU JUST GOT SERVED DISCORD!!"

 

10 - Magic duel

I like characters that swap sides. Luna/Nightmare moon, Discord, SunsetShimmer The griffonstone episode just missed the list, but Gilda too. Not just in MLP, but the only other example I can think of right now is that fight guy from the Jackie chan animated show. good to bad or bad to good, I like a good traitor conflict in a show. Trixie, of course, wasn't exactly A villain in boast busters, just like how Gilda wasn't exactly a villain in her season 1 episode (By "Not exactly a villain" I mean "Not world threatening") but when she Twilight was banned from Ponyville, which was really more like everypony else was banned from any that wasn't ponyville when the bubble went over the town, all I could think about was when people use OP characters to win and get their way in games and such, and sure you're meant to want Twilight to make it back anyway, but I liked seeing the brains over brawn story played out so well, while also redeeming Trixie to and extent (If only the EQG movies would do that too.) But I don't count them as canon. I don't care that Hasbro say they are, so long as sunset shimmer stays in the human world and there's no mention of it in the show, They ain't canon to me. TLDR: I liked magic duel just enough to put it on this list.

My list is a bit mixed to be honest....

10) Sonic Rainboom, season 1 - In my opinion the first truly great episode of the show, great character development for Rainbow Dash, more world building and awesome music!

 

9) Luna Eclipsed, season 2 - An instant classic, it brought back Luna from the premiere and perfectly fleshed out her character, personality and story. There was more worldbuilding, great character moments and the humor was great.

 

8) Princess Twilight Sparkle, season 4 - The sheer amount of quality in this episode is staggering. It immediately and perfectly addressed many of the looming problems with Alicorn Twilight, gave us the Tree of Harmony, set up the story arc for that season, had a great appearance from Discord, had the best animation of any episode PERIOD and had awesome equestrian history scenes. Was a joy to watch.

 

7) Return of Harmony, season 2 - In my opinion introduced the best villain of the show, and challenged the friendship of the mane six that had been built up through season 1. Had extremely creative animation and gave us very unique character interactions too.

 

6) Twilight's Kingdom, season 4 - In my opinion the greatest two parter ever. The stakes had never been higher, we got a great villain in Tirek, and the story arc of S4 concluded perfectly. The story and conflict was the best it has ever been in a two parter. And do I even need to mention the fight scene? It is too awesome to describe.

 

5) Flight to the Finish, season 4 - Simply the greatest Scootaloo episode. Addressed the big issue of her inability to fly in a surprisingly mature and sophisticated way, as well as building the Scootaloo/Dash relationship and the equestria games arc. Great all around.

 

4) Pinkie Pride, season 4 - Musically the greatest episode ever, and also the greatest character episode for Pinkie. We finally see her deal with a rival, as normally she is unique, and this is done perfectly. Also Cheese Sandwhich is one of the greatest one time characters ever, and Wierd Al Yankovich is great!

 

3) Magical Mystery Cure, season 3 - Opinions on this are mixed, but I personally love this episode. What my cutie mark...., A true friend and Celestia's Ballad are all amazing songs, and this episode had the balls to encite change. Seasons 1 and 2 were similar, with season 3 being a transition, and this episode was the perfect transition between the past and the future. Alicorn Twi was a great move, and this episode is Stellar.

 

2) Magic Duel, season 3 - The return of Trixie!!! I applaud this episode for making up for the abysmal Boast Busters, and giving us a great moral to boot. Trixie's redemption was called for, the humor was amazing and Twilight's part was also great. A supremely entertaining and well made episode.

 

1) Hurricane Fluttershy, season 2 - This episode was packed with more character development than anything else in the show. Fluttershy is phenominal here, and the touching moments truly were touching. Not to mention the awesome moral, montages and everything else. Simply the best.
