For sometime now I have been hearing a lot of ponies dislike the episode "the mysterious mare do well". I ask why? I for one love the episode, it wasn't in tell to day I got the idea to just ask on the forums. So I'm asking why do so many hate it?

Me and a friend think its because Rainbow Dash is I guess kind of being a jerk, I guess? But I for one was thinking this episode would be loved by A LOT OF PONIES! I mean come on now its about Rainbow Dash.... she is the most loved pony from the show. So why all this hate for it?

So please tell me do you like the episode? or hate it? and if you hate it, then why????

Because it had a bad moral. Is it okay to lie to an entire town just because your friend is being full of himself? No, I would have just rolled my eyes and laughed.

Maybe it is especially because of Rainbow Dash that many people are out there that dislike the episode.

If it had one weakness it was how she was portrayed. Not as good in that situation as it could have been.

I think many Rainbow Dash fans out there didn't like it and because of that don't like the whole episode.

Most of the complaints I have heard point out the fact that the Mane 6 were poorly characterized in the story. This applies to both RD and the others. Sure, RD can be full of herself sometimes, but to the extent shown in the episode? Forcing a trait to the extreme for a convenient plot is not at the usual level of writing for the show.

Also, the best idea the group could come up with is lie to and humiliate her without once trying to sit her down and reason it out with her? A simple talk saying that she is going too far with her hero image is all it would take. The Mane 6 come off as very passive aggressive and downright hypocritical, praising Mare-Do-Well despite being well aware that she is just a persona they themselves created, in order to teach RD a lesson about being too full of herself?

Yeah, I love this show, but the writers definitely had an off-day with that episode.

I for one loved the episode. I haven't even heard of anyone hating on it, and if they did then they need to STFU.

Yes, the episode WAS about Rainbow Dash. But it wasn't really a good episode about her. I mean the Mysterious Mare Do Well did kind of show up Rainbow Dash and take away all the fame. Yes, she did learn her lesson but quite a beating to do so.

I still liked the episode, though. Thought it was a good lesson about not bragging relentlessly.

Perhaps some fans reason that way, but for me personally, my like or dislike of RD as a character has nothing to do with how I feel about the episode.

Meh, I kind of like it, in all honesty. People said RD was OOC, but being afraid of being alone, getting jealous and always wanting to be the center of attention could be some secret flaws and could be expanded upon in future episodes.

Well I loved it but I can see how others wouldn't like it though. Personally I didn't like how RD came off in that episode. I adore her but it's pretty much as @FullSpectrum  said. RD can be full of herself sometimes but the way it was in that episode was just too much.

I never had a problem with the episode, but I'm also not a fan of Rainbow Dash, but I can see how her fans may get upset. One could argue that Twilight in Lesson Zero was way out of character, or had one personality trait taken further than it should have been, but I don't see Twilight fans taking offense. One thing to always remember about the show (any show) is that the writers don't have the same feeling for the characters that fans do. Not to say they don't care or love them, but if they have an idea they just go with it without thinking about cannon or what fans think.

I haven't seen any hate on this episode and I honestly dont know why there would be. Why would people not like how Rainbow was prorated? The way they portray her in this episode had some good behind it, she showed weakness in her character witch makes her more relatable and down to earth.

There is an episode like this for all of the mane 6 and even spike. They all show weaknesses at some point, and Im glad they do because if they were all perfect little ponies they wouldn't have depth to their character. And if they were all perfect little ponies with no flaws, not only would the characters be a pain to watch but, the entire show itself would become boring, shallow, and unwatchable.

Actually not only Rainbow Dash fans hated this episode. I hated it because of the way All of the mane six acted in it(Ironicly besides dash), I mean lying to an entire town to teach your friend a lesson... Really?

lol Im really sorry if that was hard to read Iv been up for quite sometime now and am really tired. I didn't notice how bad it was until you quoted me. XD Anyway who yes, that is true as well, and I honestly think the loop hole in this episode is some what the writes fault. Not that Im saying there bad writers, just saying that they could have gone at this type of theme with a better plot. :|

Why I dislike the episode

- Rainbow Dash's characterization. While some may have forgiven the episode for showing her weaknesses, and while I don't hate it as much as I used to, I(and plenty others) still can't look past how flanderized she was, with her most negative traits being blown to ridiculous proportions. By the end of the episode she looks like a complete idiot

- Her friends were very OOC in the episode, coming off as self-rightous and hypocritical assholes, complete with a scene(Sugarcube Corner) that completely destroys the entire purpose of the episode. Hell, I probably wouldn't hate the episode so much, if at all, if that scene were reworked or never happened at all.

- The two above combined brought what was arguably the worst presented moral in the show, with the mane 6 forcibly spoon-feeding the moral to Rainbow Dash instead of her learning the lesson on her own like the previous episodes(which in turn makes her look like an idiot as I said earlier)

- Scootaloo. The beginning gave me a lot of hope to see more of her admiration of RD and some bonding, but by the end of the episode she switches to MDW as the greatest hero of Ponyville. As someone on another forum said, it makes her look like an incredibly shallow fangirl who only likes to follow the latest trends

I know a lot of people said that they did it because RD wouldn't have listened if they talked to her, but to me it shows that they have little faith in their friend, which is really shallow for them this late in the show

Sure, I liked the superhero refernces, but what good is that if I absolutely dislike the rest of the episode? It's really hard to think of what I liked about the episode. I think the things I did like were the references, asthetic(music animation, facial expressions), MDW's design, and the interesting premise it brought for the various fix-fcs(albeit, a lot of them are completely ridiculous)

Seeing a lot about lieing to the entire town.. no one TMK ever asked her who she was, and not once did mare do well even speak anyways.. so wheres the lie in being a silent hero? There's no lie if no one asked, or if no words were spoken. They did avoid answering the obvious question when RD was ranting, but i don't think they outright lied to her.

TBH i thought the episode worked well, granted it took RD's personality to the extreme, but it did it to prove a point. Getting full of yourself as she did can be a terrible thing, and sometimes you can be a little too into yourself.

I agree the others probably could've tried better to talk to her about it rather than knock her down, but it played to a point where RD wouldn't hear it anyways, so they took action.

The episode had a lesson, that was the point, and if they had to dirty RD to do it, then so be it. Thats why the series was made, to teach a few lessons here and there, and show that friends will always stick together (you know cause "Friendship is Magic!)

IMO people need to stop looking at this show as more than a childrens television program. It's meant to have colorful stories and often a lesson to learn.

This episode was just one example of that. Even the Spike episode people seem to dislike had a point that goes entirely missed over whiny fans that the show wasn't meant for anyways.

The point there being, spike tried to take on more responsibility than he could handle, and for a selfish reason that cost him in the end.

Godot pretty much covered it. The worst part for me was when the others (sans Pinkie, fortunately) laughed at her. Seriously, that's how Discord tortured Pinkie, and they do the same to their own friend, when she hardly did anything wrong in the first place? Rainbow acts tough, but as seen in various other episodes (Sonic Rainboom, Read It And Weep, and more) she's not so hard on the inside, and the others didn't seem to consider her feelings at all in their plan.

Rainbow's bragging doesn't seem out of character to me. She's always wanted to be famous for her skills, and sort of accidentally did it, at least among the citizens of Ponyville, so it's perfectly understandable that she'd eat it right up. And it was probably even a self-limiting problem, whenever the townsponies got tired of gathering into large crowds to cheer for her. She only started trying desperately to get attention after the others started messing with her. Before that, she was just enjoying the appreciation for her good deeds.

I also would have loved it if Scootaloo remained loyal to her. But instead it's just cut and dry "bragging is evil", which I don't even agree with. Sure it can be annoying, but at most the others should have just talked to her alone, not gang up to make her feel inadequate in front of the whole town. They all saw in Sonic Rainboom how afraid she is of failing in public, and their plan basically guaranteed just that. I guess they were trying to "teach by example" that you can be a hero and not brag about it, but for none of them (especially Fluttershy) to realize the side effect of hurting Rainbow, just doesn't seem right.

The reasons I found were these. The 5 of the mane 6 were fed up with rainbow's ego so they decide to teach her a lesson in modesty. However in the scene they celebrated their accomplishments, they all did it to their own deeds. It would have been great if they praised one another. After this scene I could here the pot calling the kettle black.

(Godot and dekutree64 explained most of it)

This episode is hated mostly because of how hypocritical The Mane 6's (minus Rainbow Dash) was acting towards Rainbow Dash. Instead of just going in with a direct conversation and tell her she needs to stop  bragging about herself (even though that kind of is in her nature in the first place), they go in and basically go and do the exact thing Rainbow Dash was doing; thereby contradicting themselves.

And if you want to see a lot fo hate on this episode; go on YouTube and type in top 10 worst My Little Pony episodes. It's usually in the top 3.

Just like TotalNeon said, the episode reminds me of Batman: The Animated Series. I don't really hate anyone's opinion on how they hate the episode even if the episode has it's flaws, but to each their own.

Luckily, Stellafera isn't in here to say why she likes the episode. :P They hate the episode because, of how the Mane 6 was treating Rainbow Dash and really put her down on how they are amazed by Mare Do Well while at the same time Rainbow Dash is suffering. Dash was trying to set for example on how to make a name for herself.

Like I said, the episode has it's flaws.

Why is it disliked? Well, in a nutshell:

comic__passive_aggression_is_magic_by_so

I actually like the episode alright, but it's hard to argue against some of the issues with it. I think if the Mane Five tried reasoning with Rainbow Dash first, then the episode might have been better received. In all honesty, I think that even if the ponies talked to Rainbow, it would not have worked due to how inflated Dash's ego had become at that point. Also, I don't agree that Dash was OOC, because we've constantly seen her brag and boast about her achievements outside of this episode, and the fact that she was receiving so much attention went straight to her head and caused her arrogance to inflate tenfold. Rainbow wasn't necessarily likable throughout the entirety of the episode, but she was definitely herself.

The episode itself is just really over-the-top in every way.

My guess is that it's because a lot of people like Rainbow Dash a lot, so an episode about how she shouldn't be the way she is was disliked.

This episode wasn't that bad actually, it's just that the logic was a bit off in this one.

Sugar Cube's comic above explains it all.

Well, if the episode was all about talking to RD, it would be boring isn't it?

Maybe they cutted the scene where they tried to talk to RD but she didn't listened to them, we don't know.

Simple, it's not very good. Dash was arrogant to the point of being OOC. Her friends' response was hypocritical and unnecessary. Worse yet, the episode was written like just any cartoon with gags that fell flat and incredible coincidences all over the place. MLP isn't just any cartoon. To her credit I think Meriweather figured this out in future scripts.
