This is a project I've been following since its infancy, an Ubuntu based Linux operating system that aims to simplify everything. It's called Elementary OS, and their latest (second) release is called 'Luna'! :P

Haha, yep... I thought that very thing when I first heard the new name for the next version of the elementary project. While I wouldn't use this operating system for myself because I love KDE, these guys are really talented developers and they obviously put a ton of effort and time into this release. Hats off to them.

I'm poor, so I wouldn't be able to afford this. This looks great so far and the people who are working on this are putting forth much effort to see this succeed. Great job on their part. :)

It's free, they just ask for a $10 donation if you have the money. As for my own opinions for this, I personally use linux for most of my needs though I use win 7 for gaming. This looks like a good OS and it seems like a good starting OS for new/casual linux users. Personally: Debian serves my needs so I'm just gonna stick to that.

Also. If the rumor that Luna is gamer is assumed to be true than she most likely wouldn't be using linux as that is for the most part, worse for gaming.

It says "or download for free" actually, it's looks more like it's a "make a goodwill donation if you want" thing like Adblock Plus is.

Uh dude it's free! You can just download it next to the video. It's completely free! I'm thinking about trying this on mine. I mean it's like having Mac on a Windows

As a side note, you don't have to actually install the operating system to try it out if you wanted to. You can put the CD into your computer after burning the image to it and reboot the machine and the operating system basically runs off the CD. It doesn't touch the hard drive unless you choose to install it or do some advanced stuff using the command line or file manager.

That's what I get for not paying attention. I'm the class clown around here now, sitting in the corner with the dunce hat on my head. :P

I'll consider downloading it. Not too sure as of now. It sounds neat, but I'm in that maybe or maybe not phase right now. That and laziness.

Hey does anypony have this? Is it better than Windows 7? I'm thinking about possibly trying it out. Looks really cool  These people sure worked hard :)

You can boot it off a CD or a USB drive if you want to just try it out :) The Linux philosophy is pretty different but I like it better than Windows :P You can also 'dual boot' which means having multiple operating systems on the same computer!

And yup, they did work hard :)

Look's really good so far will definitely give this a go. I might have this as my secondary operating system and Windows 8 as my main OS :).

Is Linux better than Windows? Oh boy, here we go!

There are certain advantages Windows holds over Linux, mostly due to its dominance in the market. For example, you can run Microsoft office and tons of games on windows. Linux, not so much. While you can find games for Linux and use open office, libre office or even calligra, you can't natively run native windows software on this operating system. Well, you can through emulation... Well, it's not really emulation so much as... Oh whatever! It is possible, but you need to jump through a few hoops!

Now, comparing the operating systems themselves, Linux is clearly superior. It's open source, there are many different types of Linux distributions depending on what you're using it for, the most popular distributions are completely free of charge, and most of them have a handy tool called a package manager.

If you're looking for a specific program on windows, you have to browse the internet and download it from some obscure source. On Linux, many distributions have an app store of sorts filled with free software. You can download and search for the programs you want from their secure server, not some sketchy download site.

In terms of viruses, there are so few for Linux that many users don't even bother with a virus scanner. This is because of how the system is structured, to really deal damage to a Linux computer, the virus somehow has to obtain the admin (or root's) password. There is also some truth to the claim that some of the protection is by Linux being more obscure.

The last advantage i can really think about is some of the crazy configuration you can do to make your desktop truly your own.

Tldr; Linux is the better OS, but windows has more stuff because of its huge market.

While I'm not sure of the details, you might have a little bit of trouble with that because of UEFI... Since Luna is based on 12.04, I don't know if there even is a packaged version of grub2-uefi, and wasn't that before they got the whole Secure Boot thing properly settled?
