Why do we love Luna so much?

I have noticed that Princess Luna is perhaps the most loved character. She and Princess Celestia are my favorites because they are very wise, have mystery to their background, are extremely powerful, and are very well thought out and developed characters, But why do YOU love Luna? Leave a respose.

Luna is often drawn in a very cute way in fanart. That's probably a big reason for all the love out there, also the fact she was banished to the moon gives it that "saddening" touch. Gamer Luna also made her pretty populair, same as Woona. Personally the "Royal Canterlot Voice" did it for me, nothing better than yelling in Ye Olde English.

No, I'm pretty sure even Applejack is more loved than Luna. I'm pretty sure that all of the mane six have been called best pony than the princesses. Why? Simply because they're the main characters, and we know more about them than practically anypony.

But, yes. Derpy and Luna do seem to be the most popular minor characters. Luna is just simply fantastic, and Derpy is well, I guess a favorite of the bronies because of the eyes, I suppose.

I think that the reason why Luna is so popular is because out of the princesses, she stands out the most. Luna is flawed and has many unique traits. Many people can relate to Luna when it comes to trying to fit in (Luna Eclipsed) and feeling unappreciated. While I love Celestia and Cadance, they both have little to no flaws, so fans can't relate to them.

We love Luna so much, because unlike some ponies in the show she has very unique traits that were shown in Luna Eclipsed. When a character has a flaw it might show that they aren't perfect but, it makes you feel what the character is going through.

Its not just her character but Luna's a big time underdog. People love and want to cheer for the underdog, and justifiably so. Its the same reason why many people love Fluttershy, not that its the only reason, but its a large factor nonetheless. Fluttershy is a weak flyer, shy, timid, cowardly, and very humble. People are often either shocked or very happy to see when she can overcome her weaknesses and break through her comfort zone and prove her skeptics and bullies wrong. This is why Dragonshy and Hurricane Fluttershy are such well liked and popular episodes.

With Luna this is played up a bit differently. She's not just an underdog, she's a tragic hero. From the beginning, she only wanted to serve Equestria and its people, and for whatever reason she felt neglected by the populace and inadequate and became angry and spiteful. Luna Eclipsed shows us the more human personal side of Luna as an ordinary person from her perspective, rather than as some mythic figure or royalty to be addressed as such. Fans also like her because she doesn't get many episodes and they want to see more of her, which unfortunately, despite her significant role in the story, at least for now, makes her a background character.

That said, on her own Luna is a very interesting character. She's nearly the opposite of her sister, not in the good vs evil or day vs night sense, but personality wise. Celestia is more open, progressive and welcoming to her subjects and friends. Luna is more traditional, intimidating and not quite as understanding or open as her sister, this we see a bit in The Crystal Empire Part 1 with her skepticism of Twilight. Beyond that there really isn't much we know about Luna yet, and that's what partly makes her so appealing, fans want to discover more about her both as Nightmare Moon, Princess and as a regular individual.

Personally, I like Luna because she is way more approachable than Celestia. Luna has obvious flaws, and is not a perfect Mary-Sue like Celestia seems to be. While she is not my favorite character by any means, she is my favorite princess because she has to struggle, like a lot of us do, just to be accepted.

Well, it's probably mostly because of the episode: "Luna Eclipsed." In that episode, she did many things that defied a lot of cliche princess character traits that are found in other TV shows, and movies. She was more realistic, and had flaws as well as good traits in her character, and because of that; she ended up being a more realistic and well-rounded character. Some bronies could relate to the troubles she faced in that episode, and being able to relate to a character is a common reason for liking a certain character.

Also, she has a really nice design, and she has a lot of very good fanart; some adorable, and some beautiful.

I like Luna because she has a good character design, she is relatable in various ways, and I'm a bit of a night owl. Also there's a part of Celestia that makes me uneasy and that drives me more towards Luna.

My love of Luna probably ultimately comes from her beautiful design, (in fact discovering fan-art of her online was part of the reason I decided to give MLP a chance in the first place) But I also feel there's a lot to her character that has yet to be explored and 'Luna Eclipsed' was just the starting point...

Well because Luna is just awesome. She's has a beautiful dark character design, and she actually has an episode centered around her. So she's gone from a background figurehead like Celestia to an actual relatable character with real problems she tries to solve.

I'd love to see Luna in more episode in the future.

I personally like her as despite her being a princess, she's got problems like any ordinary pony/person. In "Luna Eclipsed" her problem of being unable to convey herself to the Ponyville populace as a non-intimidating, good-intending goddess of the night constantly backfired, for obvious reasons. Luna's new figure reminded the Ponyvillians of Nightmare Moon, scaring them. Luna didn't like that, as she wanted everypony to like her, and that's where I/we made the connection to her. We all learned Luna was trying to get rid of her former image as Nightmare Moon, in order to endear herself to the public. She was no immortal, foolproof Mary Sue goddess of the night, she had problems like all of us. And with Twilight's help, Luna succeeded. Plus, its quite safe to think of her as adorable.

"OH MOST WONDERFUL OF-I....mean, oh most wonderful of nights. (:)"

There is also the Traditional Royal Canterlot Voice, which I have personally dubbed as "Ye Olde Capslock". How can you not admire that loud, booming bass cannon of a voice that Luna's got on her.

There are many reasons why Luna's so loved...
She's the "dark" and "mysterious" character
She was rejected and she mostly still live alone
And then yeah... he personality of being socially awkard is pretty similar of many people being in the bronydom...

Probably because many of us are outcasts, and many see her as a bit of an outcast for the way ponies still fear her very presence as a result of her deeds as Nightmare Moon...so in that regard, it's generally agreed that she's the more relatable of the two sisters.

That, and she's got a positively fabulous design. :comeatus:

Character design. In a world of bright and pretty horsies, she's the sole dark looking one with a fairly brooding and angsty backstory. Thus she appeals to a more grown up audience as the 'edgy' one.

Yes I totally agree with you @Little Black Dress. Princess Luna's character design provides a great contrast to the bright and colorful world of MLP. We don't usually associate darker shades of black and blue as "girly" so that could be one reason why Luna is loved so much.

Unlike her sister Celestia who has no character flaws whatsoever, Luna is cast under this cloud of mystery. We don't really know much about her character other than what we've been given in the show so far (watch the episode Luna eclipsed and Sleepless in ponyville for some Luna action :comeatus:). We'll get to see her again in an upcoming episode revolving around Sweetie Belle, so it'll be interesting to see if we can get anything new out of her then.

Finally, she's so popular within the fandom bcuz of all the headcannons and fanwork revolving around her. Without us bronies, we wouldn't have Woona, or Gamer Luna XD

Tragic hero's/heroines are always loved and are always insperational.

Luna is an outcast. She had done something that should be unforgivable. She let her bitterness and jealousy take over her and acted on those feelings. She tried to kill (I'm assuming this based on the level of destruction she caused) her sister and take over the world and plunge it into what she thought was right. (We all have experienced such feelings and acted on them to one degree or another) she was cast out and banished losing everything she had. When she came back these feelings never left and had probably intinsified since her banishment. She was defeated again and broke down asking forgivness. (In a rather awkward and rushed way) she has since had a second chance and has been very productive and loved since she came back going back to her normal duties and continuing on with life. We see her awkwardness as she tried to get back into the swing of things during Nightmare night. She was a introvert and broke out of it.

It's something we all have experinced in one way or another or at least wished to have had for some. We all have messed up at some point in our lives that made us into an outcast and or lose everything or most of who/what we cared for. We all wished or have received a second chance to receive redemption and gain back who and what we lost or at the very least forgivness.
