I see his name usually spelled as Big Macintosh, but official sources and the wiki say Big McIntosh. Writing a fic with him as the main character and wondering how it should be spelled.

I've seen it both ways, so heck if I know. It's kinda like McLeod vs MacLeod, I don't think either is technically wrong, but heck if I know which is the official thing.

They say Big Mac and it would make no sense if some one were to say Big Mc, it just isn't logical, at all. So my vote goes to Big Macintosh, simply because Big McIntosh doesn't make very much sense.

Plus removing the "A" kind kills the apple themed naming puns because it just becomes a standard Scottish surname at that point.

Edit: wait, the variety of apple has no "A" in it?

Well, considering a Macintosh is a type of computer; Macintosh is a rather odd name for a pony in Equestria. A McIntosh, however, is a type of apple, and that would make much more sense for Big McIntosh's name considering he and his entire family all have apple related names.

It's Big Mclrosh. That's the official spelling of it. Big Mac is his nick name. Like Joe is to Joseph. Kind of weird once I think about it.

One problem with that...

I believe it's spelled that way on his blind bag as well(and both those things are made by different companies, so there has to be official paperwork spelling it that way somewhere)

Sorry! You're right. Should have looked at the card. Thank you for correcting me. That's still weird though, don't know why they'd spell it that way.

I think it was said they really wanted the pun with is nickname but had to use the screwy spelling early because Hasbro was afraid of McDonalds coming down on them at the time. I think Sweet Apple Acres was actually called "Big Mac's Orchid" or something with his name in it pre-production.

That is how it was spelled on the early merchandise, but it seems as though the name was changed. The wiki,  and some other merchandise say otherwise. It's the way the apple is spelled as well.

Really? I have his Blind Bad out of the new neon set and I think it's spelled that way there as well. As Tvtropes would say on the matter, Flip Flop of God

To address what others have said, there's no reason his nickname can't be spelled "Mac" simply because there's no A in McIntosh. It all revolves around how the Mc is pronounced, not spelled - and it's pronounced as if there's an A, so "Mac" is a justifiable spelling of his nickname.

McIntosh makes more sense to me, anyway, since that's the official spelling of the apple, which is clearly his namesake.

Huh, well this is new.  I voted Big Macintosh, but apparently canon sources now say otherwise.  Hmmm... guess I'll have to revise the few instances I've used his name in my own fic now.  Man, this is gonna be weird, I've spelled it "Macintosh" for about 1 1/2 years now!

Edit: :okiedokielokie: Buck it, I went back and changed my vote.  I can't in good conscience vote against what's technically now canon.

I think Mac is a common nickname for someone with a surname that starts with Mc/Mac, Duncan's friends on Highlander call him that all the time.

I'd go with Big Macintosh better. It's the name that I'm used to hearing when referring to Big Mac. I honestly didn't even notice there was another way to say his name till now. :P

Either way, I always call him "Big Mac." :P

It looks a little weird, but I can grasp Big McIntosh easily enough.  After all, the world famous fast food chain is named McDonald's (not MacDonald's) while their number one sandwich is called Big Mac.  :)

McIntosh makes no sense to me. Mc is usually pronounced 'mic', as in 'McDonalds'. Whereas Mac has the 'a' because it's the 'long a' sound. So, grammatically speaking, the official sources and wiki are goofballs and it needs to be spelled Macintosh, just like the computer :P Sounds to me like Mcintosh is a forced spelling due to the fact that Mac is a farmer.

It probably should be Mcintosh but it looks wrong somehow. It's one of those words that looks wrong even if it's entirely correct.

And there lies my problem with writing it. Do I write Macintosh and have it look better, or write McIntosh and have it be correct?
