gaming Your favourite mission/chapter in a video game?

My favourite is the last mission in Call of Duty: World at War, "Downfall". In this mission, you are storming The Reichstag in Berlin, fighting your way through the last remaining defences of the German Army. You see the dome of The Reichstag collapse and The Parliament room burn down. At the end, you stick the Russian Flag on top of The Reichstag, comfirming the Motherland's victory over Germany.

Gameplay footage here...

I also love the chapter in Half-Life 2, "Route Kanal". Everything about this chapter is epic, and I remeber it from when I was a little kid.

City Escape from Sonic Adventure 2

It's always just sort of been one of those levels that stuck out in my head. The music is really memorable, the stage design is simplistic but well done and it's the first level in the heroes' story. Final Rush was the best in the game in terms of level design, but City Escape holds a lot more nostalgia for me.

My top favorite mission has to be two I played not too long ago....

In transformers fall of cybertron, I made it to the final part of the game where the conclusion takes place in where the final battle with autobots and decepticons take place, it was epic, and you play multiple at each checkpoint!

Also the final mission in metal slug 3 is long and epic as heck with battles everywhere including space! Check it out!

Chapter 13 in Dead Space 2 is pretty badass, it's probably my favorite chapter/level in any game.

Also,

The Library in Halo CE is a pretty close second, just because even though it was almost impossible on Legendary, the satisfaction from finally beating it was incredible.

Where Angels Fear To Tread, from Borderlands 2. Everything about this mission was just epic, epic, epic. Beforehand, missions were pretty tough with action-packed firefights but there was still that tone of zaniness in recorded dialogue, character interactions, all that stuff. However, the moment this mission starts, everyone drops their joking - no, everything stops joking around - and instantly the game becomes a whole load more serious. I loved it - it was truly the feeling of "This is it!" And though I can't go into detail about just how epic this mission was without spoiling it, I'll just say that all the context, the plot twists, the music, the fights, the writing, and just about everything in this mission was truly amazing.

The best part was Dameon Clarke's voice acting. It was sterling, and a big part of what makes this mission stand out for me. If you have Borderlands 2 and haven't yet reached Where Angels Fear To Tread, you simply must do so! And if you don't have Borderlands 2, get it just because of this mission :P

For me it was the final chapter of Final Fantasy Tactics, especially the Necrohol of Mullonde. How is fighting a powerful demon in an undead city not badass?

Another great level was Anor Londo in Dark Souls. The everpresent twilight is too amazing to behold. The Kiln of the First Flame is another good level.

The entire 2nd disc of Final Fantasy VIII and 3rd Disc of FFIX are some of my favorite bits of Final Fantasys ever. Hell FFVIII would probably be a better game if it was just the 1st and 2nd discs alone

Also all the Final Trials in the first 3 Phoenix Wright games(Turnabout Goodbyes, My Farewell, Turnabout, Bridge to the Turnabout, and Rise From the Ashes) always hit me with tons of feels( still need to finish Apollo Justice)

... Just a note, I don't have an all-time favorite, and I'll probably post another one another time, but here ya go.

Well, there's Cave Story, for starters. On a portion of the game called "Outer Wall". A little backstory, this is the main character's lowest point in the adventure. Two likeable characters killed (one by your own hand), sidekick/partner is either dead or missing, damsel's gone missing, Booster may or may not be dead (depending on a single choice), and every Mimiga has been taken away by the Doctor. You are forced then, to go through an exploded Egg Chamber. It's filled with dead baby (Yes, BABY) dragons. In addition, you're expected to kill the ones remaining. After that, your character is (probably) hurt, depressed, and barely still going. Then you run into one of the remaining guys n the game still on your side.

... Who tells you that everything is hopeless. He tells you that you can leave with him; escape from the island and the Doctor. After you agree once because of the cruel beginner's trap of putting you on "YES" when he asks you, you'll likely deny him. He'll then tell you you have a chance, though it's darn slim, and comes at the serious cost of letting the floating island fall to the ground.

You press on anyway, and... jesus, EVERYTHING is set up for a genuinely struggling atmosphere. The music has a strong serenity that expresses the hopelessness while still urging you on, the background shows the night sky flying by as you press on, urging you forward. And even though you're at your lowest point, enemies are STILL trying to kill you. And it's quite a treacherous trek upward.

Everything seems hopeless, but you're pressing on. THAT is a truly strong mission pushed on to you.

And for a game done in a way very reminiscent of 8-bit, it did a darn good job.

I'd have to say For Pigs The Bell Tolls, AKA chapter four of Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door is simultaneously my favorite and least favorite chapter of the game. Least favorite because you are constantly running back and fourth between Twilight Town and Creepy Steeple, a journey that pits you against some of the most annoying enemies in the entire game: Hyper Goomba and Hyper Clefts, Crayzee Dayzees and Buzzy Beetles (normal, spiked, flying and spiked flying) who are immune to fire, which all your partner's attacks are for this chapter.

However, this is also the chapter that introduces my favorite character of all your partners: Vivian. Maybe it's just because I love Face Heel Turns, but you can't help but warm up to her. Plus, there's this theme of helplessness throughout the entire chapter, as essential the bad guy has bested you and taken everything that was once yours and made it his. Plus, although they lose their effect after a while, the locations for this area are rather nice to look at in that creepy sense.

A lot of the missions I enjoyed were

  • Random Misc. side quests in Skyrim and New Vegas
  • All of the Call of Duty: World at War Missions
  • Most of the Mass Effect 1,2, and 3 missions were fun for me.

My favorite mission of all time is the default city in Halo 3: ODST. There's just something special about roaming the city at night (with the beautiful music in the background) as an ODST, and not a super Spartan. I don't know why but I really enjoyed the entire ODST game, where as most people in my school disliked it. There's just something about it that gives a nostalgic feeling, I don't know why.

I'd have to go with Ravenholm, from Half-Life 2. The atmosphere and ambient music are great. There are traps that you can either get caught in yourself, or use them against the hoard of Headcrabs and Zombies. Ammo is scarce but still available, so you have to make great use of the Gravity Gun, or just be really good and get headshots all the time. But with all the stuff you can throw at the zombies that make for spectacular deaths, why would you not use the Gravity Gun? Ravenholm also introduced the Fast Zombie, which I still think is one of the creepiest video game enemies ever.

The final chapter from HL2 Episode 2 is also a great one. Just you, your car, and a bunch of Magnusson Devices versus an army of Striders and Hunters :)

Jupiter Lighthouse in Golden Sun: the Lost Age is wonderful. Plenty of cool and creative puzzles, very important plot stuff, plenty of awesome loot, and oh my God, the music. In some game areas, the music compliments the atmosphere and feel. In Jupiter Lighthouse, the music CREATES it.

The music in question:

It's not as effective when you aren't playing through the dungeon, but it's still great. Also, if it seems low quality, it's because it's a GBA game.

That being said, it isn't even the best music in the game. That honor goes to the Venus Lighthouse. But seriously, all the music in the first 2 games is amazing (3rd has some good stuff, but over all, the soundtrack isn;t as good).

And an epic metal version of it:

I also love the chapter in Half-Life 2, "Route Kanal". Everything about this chapter is epic, and I remeber it from when I was a little kid.

Really? I hate Route Kanal. It was cool the first time I played it, but now it just feels so tedious. I also hate manhacks, and Kanal has like a million manhacks.

Final Fantasy 9, just after Zidane gets his soul ripped from his body by Garland and goes into a Blue Screen of Death. Dude gets up off the table Garland left him on. and starts walking while the greatest game sound track of all time plays. And one by one his party mates show up and say a line or two and help him wail on creatures that had been mini bosses earlier in the game, and if like me you were really lucky, each party member goes into trance as they arrive turning it into a crowning moment of badassitude. Was the only time I can actually say I got shivers from the utter awesomeness in a video game.

I really loved the sniper mission in Halo Reach. I was never good enough to get use the sniper, but I could be the elite sniper all I wanted and not get yelled at when I miss. Another (I'm not sick, I propmise) was No Russian in MW2. Not the part about killing hundreds of innocent people, but the fact that it spawned one of the best Multiplayer maps.

Favourite mission? Quest called "Shoot this guy in the face" from Borderlands 2 of course! Most epic quest ever created

Bespin Platform from Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast (I love whole game, but this chapter is my favourite).

The Mind of Madness quest from Skyrim.

Definitely Chapter 3 of Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. Where you go into Glitzville and go through a series of battles to gain supremacy. And witness a very touching backstory as well between a lost sibling relationship because of the evil done by the boss of the level.

I don't have a single favorite mission in a video game. When I thought about it, the first thing that came to my mind was the mission in "Space Marine" where you ride on a Valkyrie. That was one of the most exciting parts of the game. Sadly, that part of the mission was way too short. Just when you're getting pumped from shooting down orks with a heavy bolter, the Valkyrie crashes.

Hard-route Venom from the original Star Fox. The music, the atmosphere, and the difficulty all mesh together to make this one of my favorite missions out of any Star Fox game.

I'm also a big fan of the forest temple from Ocarina of Time…another level with great music and atmosphere (even if it's not one of the most difficult dungeons in the game).
