"I now pronounce you Stallion and Mare." Why not husband and wife?

This is something that perplexes me. During the wedding for Cadence and Shining Armor they do their vows and she says, "I now pronounce you stallion and mare." As opposed to...? Why didn't they just say husband and wife?  It's clearly announced that it's a wedding, so why give them a 'title' of something that they already are?

The show writers have been shown to go out of their way to include as many equine puns and word changes as possible. Every single city or town is an equine pun, for example. I just think it's another situation where they chose to make things horse-related.

I get the feeling its because they want to keep the show as horse-centric as possible, though now that you bring it up it doesn't make much sense to do so. maybe they don't have husband and wife titles in equestria? /=|

I want to make a joke about animal husbandry but I can't think of one /=|

They probably don't say husband and wife like we do in Equestria. It's probably a tradition to say '' I now pronounce you, stallion and mare'' in Equestria during a wedding. It's just me, my opinion after all.

This is not about your reply, but it's just curious to note that you always seem to be the first to reply to my topics. And I see you all over the place on other topics. Do you go to every single topic that gets posted? LOL.

Basically all that ~Chaotic Discord~ said is true. Like many other children's shows which the characters presented are not human, play-offs of such sayings such as husband and wife that we all are familiar with are presented. It's the same purpose for the show's use of fillies and gentlecolts.

I still like husband and wife more. It just makes more logical sense because it's designating the official union of two ponies. Think of it like this. No other species has a consideration of marriage other than humanity. Plus, only humans blush. Ponies don't have blood vessels that travel to their cheeks that causes the blushing. So technically, the ponies already have some human characteristics. I would be fine then on calling them "husband and wife". Stallion and mare doesn't ring it for me.

But yeah, it's like what everyone else has said. They want to give the show more equestrian terminology.

Like CD said, the writers were probably just trying to add yet another equine-related pun.  In addition, it's also common to say "I now pronounce you man and wife" instead of "husband and wife", so perhaps the writers were thinking along those lines when they chose to go with "I now pronounce you stallion and mare".  Just a thought.

Its just a pony pun, they didn't wanna use husband and wife because along with all the other pony terms its a bit out of place i guess.

Although to be honest I wish there was some other term they could use that isn't already what they both are.

Its kinda like saying that they somehow weren't stallions or mares beforehand xD.

So yeah its a bit weird, but i guess there isn't really any other clever pony puns to use instead.

It's not uncommon to hear a pastor say "I now pronounce you man and wife" instead of husband and wife...so if they were to use the word stallion at all, it probably should've been "I now pronounce you stallion and wife" IMO. Still, the equine puns don't really bother me one way or the other. Sure, they're often facepalm-worthy, but in a cute and endearing way.

...Unlike the rock-related puns from the Flintstones. >_>

Do I understand right, that "stallion" and "mare" indicate horses in the age when they are ready to breed?

If it's so. it sounds kinda bestialy, so, I can understand why does it irritate some people.

Actually, in the show, Cadence and Shining Armor were prounced by Celestia as "Mare, and Colt" which is more than an acceptable substitute. Having them pronounced as husband and wife would be kind of jarring considering they're ponies and when you think 'husband and wife' you naturally think of humans getting married, not ponies.

Which makes the matter more questionable. Isn't a colt a young male horse? Celestia pronounced Cadence an adult female, but Shining Armour as a young male?

Well because ponies obviously don't get married in real life. "mare and colt" seems like the only pony alternative. It just makes more sense in the context of the show.

There are a riddiculous amount of puns in MLP. Baltimare, Everypony, Mane 6, and many more. They found an opportunity and took it. I wish I could give constructive criticism to MLP, but it's just too awesome. XD
