I forget if I've posted in this topic already, but I also don't really care whether I have or not lol.

I've an undeniably awesome and brilliantly-conceived cockatrice-turned-alicorn OC named Corncob who inexplicably developed his alicorn form and abilities during a tense game of Checkers.  He was facing off against his arch nemesis Tony, who is a mildly evil, asthmatic squirrel with one mechanical paw.  Who later becomes a squirrel-icorn for non-Checkers reasons and challenges Corncob to a bout of tug o' war on the moon.

And guess what?  It doesn't matter what anyone thinks about my totally-not-made-up-as-I-go OCs.  It's my imagination, I'll use it as I see fit.  Alicorn OCs are fine, and if you don't like them...  Don't create one.  Meanwhile, Corncob and Tony have an epic lunar competition planned.  The referree?  An alicorn moonbeast named Quartgaggleplox with the body of a featherless ostrich and the head of C3P0.

Lately I've been getting somewhat 'trolled' on my channel for my OC being an alicorn.

The guy made his point as to why he didn't like alicorns but he's not bothered to give her backstory a proper read, instead asked me to sum up her backstory in a quick skype chat. However form his first posts about my OC being an automatic knock off mary sue, or a cop out more or in his own words "I'm not gonna dislike you for some mary sue as **** OC "

Needless to say after I gave him a quick rough of her backstory, he called her a twilight/cadence knock off, and that all alicorns contribute to 'peace' that's why they are alicorns in the first place, and told me my OC couldn't be just one alicorn of "peace" even when I said her duties as a royal tend to fall on being a peace talker and negotiator between other kingdoms.

Funny thing is, I told him I respected his opinion and only wish he'd respect that I have one as well. To which he said "You're an alicorn OC, you lost my respect when you made her". So ouch...

The fact I have an alicorn OC, apparently is justifable for someone not to treat me equally as others.

Again I respect all opinions here long as they are professionally stated. I personally like my OC for my own reasons and there are others here who say she's a decent OC. That's good enough for me. I put a lot of effort into making her what she is, and as others said to me when I had an OC crisies and actually 'thought about giving her up', stated that all my hard work and artwork would be wasted. I suppose that is all good and true. So thanks to all of you for supporting me on that.

(To look more into the exchanges of text the guy made, you can look here on my recent episode on youtube)

Personally I don't have an alicorn OC.

I just have 1 OC. Hes a unicorn with a talent for making things go boom

*shrugs*

One of the biggest problems with alicorn OCs is that people make them ridiculously overpowered then realize "oh no, this it too Mary Sue" so they break the wings in a childhood incident or something which cripples them but now they are incredibly dramatic, still op, and kinda boring.

This is most Alicorn OCs

BUT THERE ARE SOME GOOD ONES

I've an undeniably awesome and brilliantly-conceived cockatrice-turned-alicorn OC named Corncob who inexplicably developed his alicorn form and abilities during a tense game of Checkers.  He was facing off against his arch nemesis Tony, who is a mildly evil, asthmatic squirrel with one mechanical paw.  Who later becomes a squirrel-icorn for non-Checkers reasons and challenges Corncob to a bout of tug o' war on the moon.

For example, this oc still seems op, but hes not asking to be taken seriously! Unlike the whole "become an alicorn save equestria go home and have a tea party" kinda thing

Fanfictions. Mary sues are boring, make them funny or at least give them a ridiculously OP nemesis :P

They are bad when they are alicorns simply to be alicorns, as it is not a genetic norm in the canon of the show. This is especially true when no reasoning is given.

It ius hated much more due to the large amount of people who make the character a self insert, have them shipped with a canon character, and give them a rainbow mane and tail. All because just because.

To use an example from another fandom, it's the same reason why people hate OCs from DBZ that are instantly Super Saiyan with no training what so ever. While this did happen in canon with Goten and Trunks, it was for the sake of a joke, and neither was really relevant in the grand scheme of things, barring fusion.

Another example, this time from Yugioh. If your character has Yubel, Obelisk the Tormentor, Zorc, Malefics, etc that are one of a kind monsters as stated by the show, then it's stupid because you have to rework so many things

Pokemon example, your OC has Arceus right off the bat. While you can catch Arceus, Arceus is also the creator of the whole damn universe, it seems like catching him is just a game mechanic(Ratatta koing Arceus)

The bottom line is that alicorns are basically the super prodigies of the MLP Verse, there's really no point to having them other than to show off power, because if you are going to do it for personality, you don't need an alicorn.

Let's all try to remember the definition of Mary Sue...

Mary Sue - A character so perfect, that they are never challenged by the events of the narrative.

What this means is...is that the character never delvelopes from any challenges that comes his/her way, this is due cause they are either overpowered in their talents, physical talents or personality alone.

Now I hate any character that is OP, this can go for any pony OC. Heck I met a pegasus OC that could conjure lightning through his wings...turn it into magic...and use that magic to make anything he wanted... But that is just with magical talents, he still was challenged personality and physically wise. And then there are those OCs that their personality is just so perfect they never do wrong... totally wrong yes. This never is never just restricted to alicorn OCs though it is common in OCs cause some rooky bronies tend to believe that 'oh since alicorns are royals in the MLP cannon of the show, they have to be at their best in order to rule their society'. This obviously isnt' the case, is Luna perfect? NO! Is Twilight perfect? Heck no.

No, Alicorn OCs aren't bad, whomever tells others that their ponysona is bad because of anecdotal stereotypes should feel bad.

There are plenty of people with Crystal and bat pony OCs that are just as debatable and stereotypical as Alicorns, yet no one will go to great lengths to call people out on it.

So I have an alicorn of but idk if her story is really bad or not. Basically, she has issues (sorry if I offend people) and can kill ponies. When she was killed she had 1 wish and she wished to have a normal life and her wish came true >.<

Woops I said of instead of oc

@@Lightning Bliss, Agree, so much. One of the worst ever OCs I encountered was a pegasus who could not only do magic, but had two extra Elements for no reason. There was zero charactarisation and the OC was the best at everything without trying.

Basically, any OC needs to have to work for their achievements. Take my alicorn OC Clover. I RP her as a unicorn mostly, but recently in an RP with Lightning Bliss, I have been able to use her as an alicorn. She's flawed, she's certainly not unbeatable and her personality is rounded. Oh, and she worked for her ascension. That is the thing that gets me about some alicorn OCs. They didn't have to pull off an amazing feat, they were just born like it. And they're the daughter of either Luna or Celestia, so therefore are god beings on top of being alicorns. :eww:

Chrysalis had been juicing herself with love for weeks and her reactions was

"Holy crap! I did it!?"

"Weeks"? Really? Still proves that they aren't infallible. Also unicorns could raise the sun/moon as well. The only reason they stopped was because they no longer needed to.

I mean in defense of my OC/Ponysona, Lightning Bliss earned "Alicorn of Peace" which in term litterally she keeps the peace in Equestria society and beyond that.

But more or less she's just an alicorn without a castle cause she technically doesn't need one, and goes around the lands dealing with disputes between other governments, kingdoms, even different races of pony, dragon, gryphon etc etc.

How she earned this was basically she hated fighting, as much as I do. Believe it or not everypony I may seem well bounded, stable and willing to defend myself, but outside I tend to be more submissive, trying to stay out of trouble and keep a quiet calm voice. It's not because I'm shy, it's because I don't want to give off the wrong impression and cause any disturbence or arguements.

My OC feel in love with her husband who was a draconequus, his parents didn't approve but her friends the gryphons felt pity for her and her friends and so tried to help by hosting a private secret wedding but it didn't work. A war was about to break out over her wedding between the gryphons and draconequus, and she found a way...through inner powers she didn't know she had, and calmed everyone down long enough for them to make peace with each other. And when she finally was able to get married, she felt the true joy and understanding of having the ultimate peace with thy neighbor. And so she ascended.

I know others argued with me "Peace" is the same as "Harmony" but when it comes to keeping the 'peace' amongst other kingdoms and cultures is no easy feat for her. My OC has self concious issues by the way she looks, though even her differences help her in negotiating with other cultures, she finds it awkward and embrassing being amongst her pony kind because she feels...too different from them. And now that she's an alicorn that has only gotten worse.

She also orginally was a pegasus and never had experience with magic, she was more grounded by her earth pony step father. So now she's got to understand magic too and has only scratched the basics. Her magic at its ultimate, unleashed 'by its own will it seems' isn't even enough to stop a unicorn who's willing to hurt her, because it simply does this: When her horn taps the power of peace within her own heart, it creates an atmosphere of safety, peace and serenity. It litterally helps her and those around her to clear their heads, gain some stability and able to rethink their thoughts and feelings, and help find the peace within their own hearts and minds. However there is a flaw with this magic, it may create a peaceful pleasent atmosphere, but it does NOT mean everyone exposed to it will grasp the peace within themselves. Peace is always a choice and thats the way it should be. If others wish to fight for war, then that is their choice. Her magic is a choice for others to accept.

Hence another thing, she's far from OP...even at her most powerful it still doesn't sway others ever. It doesn't absorb magic, doesn't change bad into good, transform anypony or nothing...it just creates a nice peaceful atmosphere.

I never said they were infallible, just powerful. And yes, Chrysalis had to have been in there for weeks, as the barrier had been up for quite some time.

And as for unicorns, it took several unicorns to do that. Basically, I kind of see the alicorn like the rottweiler to a unicorn's daschund. Could enough of the weaker ones overpower the stronger? Definitely. But the more powerful is still tough

EEr no it's still your assumption that they were weeks there. There is no clue at how much it took for the lot to be gathered and prepare.

Still depends. The average may be stronger.

Chrysalis can't get past the shield, this is a given. She had to have entered before the shield went up in the first place. Are you going to tell me that everything was prepared in a couple of days, that Twilight only got her invitation a day before it began? It makes far more sense for it to have taken at least a couple of days.

Also worth noting, Chrysalis was flabbergasted that she beat Celestia, even she didn't think she had the power in her to do it.

in all honesty, it all depends on the character and the creator. if they live in equestria or something, then it would be better to make up your own land for them to be in, or an alternate universe. these creatures are supposed to be god like, and having them all roam around in something like ponyville really takes that away.

as for the creator, it would be so so much better if you just chose one instead of going on both.
trust me, everyone wants to do one or another, i had that problem a lot when i was working on one of my characters.
i wanted her to be a unicorn, but i also wanted her to be a pegasus. (at the time, at least.)
a simpler way of cleaning this up was to make them an alicorn, right? well it depends on if the character is a sona or not.

but anyways, does your pony like to make crafting and all that good stuff? make it a unicorn
does it like to take a stroll in the big blue sky? mess with the weather and all that? make it a pegasus
does it like basic simple life? none of those fancy ol' powers, and to simply roam the land with sweat on their faces? then make it an earth pony.

this doesnt have to be the end all be all of stuff, this was just an example of what i see in the show.
you can have a unicorn who farms for all you care!
just dont choose a alicorn if you dont know what you want. really think about the character first, then the race.

Topic is still raging on I see heh.

Im just going to throw in my input (Probably again, but oh well) I think that having Alicorn OCs is fine, but they need to be made in moderation. My Alicorn OC has a devastating weakness to bright lights. That is an example. He has magical powers and wings to fly with, but he also has a flaw that doesn't make him overpowered.

The alicorn fame is what really is the problem I think. By this I mean that many people think only princesses/princes can be alicorns. That they have all these godly abilities. No one ever thinks that more alicorns could exist in lands far beyond equestria. I don't see why anyone would want to really relate their characters to canon characters because it just throws a monkey wrench in the machine that is the story and fandom. My OC's no matter what fandom and race they are will always be outside of canon areas until the actual RP. Meaning historywise, I keep them far away from canon characters.

I keep on jumping from one thing to another, in short, I think if people only had like 1 or maybe MAYBE 2 Alicorn OCs it would be fine as long as they were properly flawed or powered down to where they weren't godlike. No relation to canon characters as well.

Really, I think someone should compile a list from the general brony population. What should an Alicorn have to be acceptable.

You are talking... good. Thing is however what you say doesn't matter. What i am just saying is you simply can't be sure.

True, alicorns can be pretty darn near Mary Sues, but I only care about that when you're using the character for a narrative. If it's just your pony-sona it's fine, since it's a fan thing. I have no right to stop you there. Technically I don't have a right to stop you if you make a story with a Mary-Sue alicorn either, but it'll make for one bad story.

So yeah, I think alicorn OCs are fine

There's nothing really wrong with alicorn OCs per se, as long as they don't fall into any of the already well-stated traps that send them into a downward spiral into Mary Sue-hood. The trouble is that even if they are not insanely powerful, royalty, tragically disabled, related to a major character or tacky, they go against the spirit of the series itself which suggests quite strongly, both in the show and supplementary material, that alicorns are rare.

Given that, having so many pop up all over the place seems to kind of defeat the spirit of the whole thing.

(Of course, having said that, I have to say I am guilty of having helped to create an alicorn OC, because there is simply no reasoning with a seven year old girl when she wants to make one...)

Well I can understand the fear of over alicorn population, but there are simple ways to beat that for individual RPs. I give you 2 quick rules that could help with that. The second one seems unfair, but I do believe that RPers that have been longer in the RP (or were first there) should have some first dibs if they so choose.

1. Limit 1 Alicorn per RPer

2. Only 3-5 (or however many) Alicorn OCs Total

Also the mary sue test can be implemented into either of these two rules. Just simply ask the player that is wanting to RP as an alicorn to do a small RP sample with you or whoever the host of the RP is. If deemed OP or wrong, their character can be denied, but at least they would have a fair chance at perhaps being able to RP as an Alicorn.

Nyx wasn't a Mary Sue, I don't think.

She isn't a Sue because she is challenged, but she borders dangerously close to being one. After her reformation, she has no real character flaws aside from being pushed to limit by other ponies. She's unnaturally powerful for no reason. She is loved by practically everybody and whomever doesn't is made to look like a huge douche who just needs to see the light, etc.

Nyx is a borderline Sue though, because she did get her ass kicked by Everfree animals and was given challenges during her time as Nightmare Moon
