A genie in mlp? yay or nay?

A pony genie could be cute, I mean the other ponies do look pretty adorable with towels on their headss(which is just how I'm used to seeing genies, not meaning any sort of stereotype here). Plus there already is magic, and I'm sure one of the non-unicorn characters wouldn't mind having a few wishes granted... could be a fun episode.

Maybe it's just me, but I'd like to keep humanity out of Equestria at all times.

Iron Will fit pretty nicely, but yeah... Things with human faces might get the mythos kind of confuzzled.

Like a mermaid or a centaur? That'd be odd...

 

Although this is a cartoon, so who's to say they can't have an equine genie?

Hesitating between borderline nay and indifference. Unless it had to do with Saddle Arabia directly, in this case it gains my automatic approval. Anything that would expand SA's canon lore would be awesome.

 

Other than that, I'm certain there are many more interesting mythological creatures they could use.

Meh, while the idea is cool, unless they go the way of Norm the Genie, I don't want it. Norm really just granted lousy wishes (omelette not on a plate, for example), but the wishes still happened. The concept of backfiring wishes has moved into the 'been there; done that' section. I'd like to see more of a trickster genie ala Norm who uses loopholes in the wish to get his/her own kicks. Kinda like an internet troll (moral of the episode: don't feed the trolls. ).

 

Edit: Waita second! Those ugly little troll dolls! Doesn't Hasbro have the license to those? Those should totally be the wishing villain!

That's a good question. MLP deals quite frequently with mythical creatures and a genie would be very interesting. They could even go down the creepy route and make it a djinn; something more sinister that needs eradicating. It would be a very good way of re-asserting everypony's elements of harmony.

Well it's weird calling flutter shy a mythical creature ^^.  but she totally is.  she's such a familiar character that she feels normal.  Mythical generally suggests rare.  But in equestrian it's pretty much common place.

It's just . . . when you're writing a world like Equestria, where many creatures from different mythologies co-exist, you can't just bring them in for the sake of them being there. They have to serve an actual narrative purpose.

 

Genies, or similar wish granting entities are usually brought in to grant a wish for a character because of the character's problems and then when the wish is granted, the character then learns the consquences of his fantasy made real. Think the Mirror Pool from Too Many Pinkie Pies, or Heart's Desire in The Cutie Pox.

 

Aside from the myriad of magical forces in Equestria, Discord could very well grant wishes, and actually would have reason to do so!

 

In Discord's semi-reformed manner, he would love to twist reality around one of the Mane Six or even the CMC's desire, but ultimately have them "learn a wonderful lesson" from the experience in order to justify his antics as "good."

 

Now, if a genie were presented more in a classical sense, as a menace some poor soul just happened to release, an episode could be built around trying to recapture this dangerous spirit.

but calling those antics good would be subjective,

which is why I love the idea.

 

I fully call discord straight up evil because he delighted in twilight's suffering.  I mean not panik, or fear but like utter sadness and despair and he couldn't have been happier.
