Discord point of interest.

Now a big deal is made out of celestail and or luna raising the sun and the moon,

In return of harmoney discord does it bam, bam, bam effortlessly.

in that night, day, night scene.
Now I'm sure that was done for comedic value,

I mean theoretically discord could fill in for luna or Celestail.   He could.
Just a prediction (hums I know something you don't know doe da doe da).

Discord is vastly more powerful than Celestia and Luna but has the brain capacity of a toddler on crack. Simply put, lots of power but no brain or common sense

Well pretty much the only stronger than discord is the EoH but that's 6 super string ponies plus magical elements however discord is probably dumber than a potatoe doing drugs

I've thought about this many times! I think if the 'Discord being mostly trustworthy' thing goes through (which I hope it does), then maybe we could get an episode where the four princesses and the elements have to go out of the county for royal business, and Discord has to stay behind to raise the sun and moon and manage the country. That would be hilarious. :D

Sorta like Doctor Doofenshmirtz from Phineas and Ferb!img-2005405-1-biggrin.png

Well, the Doctor had plenty of power and technical brain but no common sense. Discord had less tactical intelligence considering he's color blind.

Discord is, technically speaking, very powerful. He can twist reality however he pleases and the laws of physics mean nothing to him. I say technically because after Return of Harmony, Discord does not do anything dangerous with his powers. He's not very smart.

Discord is most like loci from mythology, a mistifous immortal being who just screws around for hte sake of it. I mean he could have just teleported away from the EoH rainbow, the warm up time on the attack is sure long enough to run for it don't you think

OH my God you gave me an epic idea.

What if they did all that and he tried to do it right.  No chaos.. and bucks it up.  I mean he's the embodyment of chaos.

He shouldn't know the first thing about harmony.

Like imagine discord having a break down episode.  He is a good guy now LOL.  Good guys have break downs on this show.

"OH my God their gonna lock me up again! I'm to pretty for jail they'll eat me alive!"

(I can totally hear john saying this LOL).

Really, you don't say? Discord is powerful in his own right but, he just doesn't take advantage of what he has by making a strategy. He is just a comic relief.

Can I just put something out there? Just cause I can? Feel free to agree or disagree.

Discord is obviously smart to some degree. Anyone with sarcasm is already smart enough to process humor to a higher degree. Plus, he's been alive for a very long time (eons, remember his line?) and he did rule Equestria for a while, though apparently not to the ponies' liking.

But he is the Spirit of Chaos. He may not show it, but he has to know that chaos is extremely dangerous.

Maybe he just acts silly and plays around with his powers because he knows that if he actually did put his mind to it and use them for evil (or good) he could do whatever the heck he wants, and no one could possibly stop him (except for the EoH).

And for a being like him, wouldn't being unbeatable become really boring?

SO BASICALLY!

I hope to have a scene in Season 4 that shows what Discord could do if he actually set his mind to something and was serious about it. Cause honestly, whether you like him or hate him, that could potentially be really cool. e9FkmL5.png

The problem lies in the fact that he gives the Mane 6 back their horns and wings just to keep to the rules, stands there saying "Come at me bro" while the Elements charge up, and actually kept his word on where he put the Elements

Discord (...) has the brain capacity of a toddler on crack. Simply put, lots of power but no brain or common sense
discord is probably dumber than a potatoe doing drugs
 Discord had less tactical intelligence
 He's not very smart
he just doesn't take advantage of what he has by making a strategy. He is just a comic relief.

Tell me you're just trolling, because I cannot believe what I see. Discord being dumb? Less tactical intelligence? Lack of strategic thinking? Are you sure we all watch the same show? img-2017606-2-wacko.png

Discord had 1000 years for coming up with a master plan, and so he did. Straight after freeing from the stone, he stole the very things that could stop him -- the Elements of Harmony -- and hide them from mane six. He knew that stealing the Elements will be a monkey wrench which will crash their confidence and morale.

Then he used the elements as sort of a "hostage" to force mane six to do whatever he wanted them doing. But this was only a trick to keep them involved in his games and ultimately become easier for him to corrupt. He set up lots of traps (mostly psychological) to twist their characters to the very opposite. And I often highlight that this is not a coincidence that he started from converting Applejack: She's the official truth-teller of the mane six, the Element of Honesty, and honesty is the foundation for every relationship. An undisturbed flow of information is crucial for every team work. Without it, the whole team breaks into pieces. And that's exactly what happened, and what he planned to happen from the very beginning. He knew exactly where to hit. "Divide and conquer". Sounds much like a strategy to me.

The whole game he prepared for mane six was a trick. He set up lots of rules for them, because he knew that they will want to keep with the rules (as being honest, play fair and lawful), which will give him advantage upon them, since he can break his own rules as a master of the game, or bend them to his own needs. If you want someone tamed, throw some laws upon him.

And all of that had a bigger goal from the very beginning: he wanted to break the real Elements of Harmony apart (recall, the only thing which could stop him) without them noticing what's really going on, and then take over the rule upon Equestria, making it the chaos capitol of the world. He played them all as pawns on his checkerboard.

If all of this isn't strategic thinking then I don't know what else is img-2017606-3-sleep.png

The worst thing you can do in a battle is underestimating your opponent. Aren't you underestimating Discord here? Then learn from his failure, because underestimating the opponents was the very thing which made him fail.

Do you think that Discord failed because he was stupid? Do you think that the reason why he literally allowed them to beat him is that he wasn't smart enough to predict that? Not at all. It doesn't require to be stupid to make mistakes. And his mistake was being over-confident about his victory. He was so confident, that he was convinced that they simply won't be able to use the Elements of Harmony against him, after he twisted their characters to the very opposite. He was so confident that he hadn't let the thought to his mind that he might lose. It was his pride that made him fail.

He's the magic combination of both Celestia and Luna, yet he's got the brains of like the dumbest person in the entire planet. That's basically it.

Discord wasn't a clever manipulator like people say. His traps were just for fun and it was pretty clear he was manually brainwashing the Mane 6 save Twilight. Manipulation isn't just snapping your fingers and saying "You're bad now".

Discord was incredibly stupid at points. He had no reason to keep his word or play by the rules yet he did for some reason. That brings up your point that Discord could have broken the rules and kept the wings and horns or simply teleport the Elements to the Moon yet he plays fair. Another problem, if he had been smart, he would have studied the Elements to find how they worked instead of throwing caution to the wind and putting the world into chaos. When they first try the Elements, you can see Discord visibly crap himself and think "Oh god, I'm screwed". Granted it didn't work that time, but the fact that he stood there with a bulls-eye on his chest was a huge gamble that he was lucky worked.

Basically, Discord is dumber than Majin Buu from DBZ. At least Buu came up with complicated plans despite being out-gunned. Discord has the IQ of a 4 year old when it comes to tactics, he just brute forces everything

His traps were just for fun

They were for fun, but not just for fun. If he wanted to just make fun of them, he would... I don't know... do  whatever it is what Trixie does? :-J

Manipulation isn't just snapping your fingers and saying "You're bad now".

Of course it isn't, and he did it that way only in the case of Fluttershy, who was invulnerable to his manipulation. With all remaining ponies he used clever psycho-manipulation on a deep level. You might haven't noticed that if you're not interested in psychology, different personalities people (or ponies) have and how they interact internally, their needs, fears, doubts etc., and how one can exploit them to convince them to do something they don't usually do. Applejack started to lie when he convinced her that truth could be hurting to her friends. With Rainbow Dash, he exploited her loyalty and urge to help & care about her friends (which are not only the mane six, but also many Pegasi from Cloudsdale, her home town). With Rarity, he exploited her love for beauty and gemstones, and her vain, to turn her generosity into greed (this was pretty easy: just a matter of reversing the direction). The hardest to break was Twilight, because her strength comes from her supportive friends and making them all connected. That's why she fell as last, when he converted all her friends. He couldn't start from her, because her friends would support her and undermine his efforts. That's why he left her for end.

Discord was incredibly stupid at points. He had no reason to keep his word or play by the rules yet he did for some reason.

Exactly: for some reason. And when someone does something for a reason, how can he be stupid? You contradict yourself in the same sentence. The reason you mentioned is this: he knew they won't keep up to his rules if they see he breaks them himself. And he wanted them to keep playing in his games, according to his rules. He could bend these rules, but he had to keep up appearances that he still plays according to these rules. It's enough that he created those rules, because that gives him advantage nevertheless upon these who only follow them. He could even set-up these rules to his advantage from starters. Then he could win without breaking the rules (an he did!), and they would think this is all their faults, since "he won fair and square".

It's how lawyers work: They will beat you to the ground, all "legally" with full respect to laws. Everything is in the "agreement" they give you to sign, and you don't see anything evil or suspicious there at the moment you sign it. But it's all about the little sneaky details they don't say to you which makes them win. And even the very idea that they create the rules, not you, gives them advantage upon you. Discord did the same: He made the rules they all had to follow. This already gave him advantage. Moreover, he didn't say that he won't be manipulating them, playing on their psyche. It wasn't forbidden by his rules. He might then indirectly cause them break these rules themselves, so they would then think it was their own fault. Priceless img-387689-1-5e7kmu.png

Twilight and her friends were less clever at that moment, since they could just say they won't play according to rules they didn't made and they aren't obliged to follow.

That brings up your point that Discord could have broken the rules

He could, but this would make him less credible to the mane six. And he wanted them to think he obeys the rules too, to keep them obeying them too.

and kept the wings and horns or simply teleport the Elements to the Moon

He could, but this wouldn't solve his problem. He knew from the very beginning that the true Elements are not these shiny little knick-knack from Celestia's box. Notice how he talks with mane six in Celestia's palace: he know exactly which Element is represented by which pony. He knows that the true Elements are those ponies. But he tries to convince them (by hiding the tinsels etc.) that they're more important than they are, and that without them they are doomed. He tries to distract them, and Twilight notices it only after getting all those letters from Celestia. Watch the episode again if you don't see it.

if he had been smart, he would have studied the Elements to find how they worked

This wasn't his goal. And there was no time for that as long as mane six was around, backed up by Celestia. They were living threat to his plans, and he needed to defeat them first.

Quick side question: do you play chess?

Maybe instead of seeing how Discord is dumb, try to imagine you're him and what should you do after 1000 years of waiting in a stone for your revenge to achieve your goal of wrecking your lovely chaos upon all the world. The first thing I would do is to think about what could stop me from that. Who could stand on my way and how can I avoid that. What goals to attack first to be faster than my opponent. This is exactly the strategic thinking. It's planning ahead, to be always several steps ahead of your opponent. And I see a lot of it in Discord's deeds.

When they first try the Elements, you can see Discord visibly crap himself and think "Oh god, I'm screwed". Granted it didn't work that time, but the fact that he stood there with a bulls-eye on his chest was a huge gamble that he was lucky worked.

He wouldn't stand there like that if he wasn't sure that they will fail and they don't do him any harm. It was a mockery from them, to make them feel even less capable of beating him.

1. Good point

2. I don't know about you, but the Mane 6, while disheartened, didn't turn grey until Discord used the swirly eyes on them. Applejack was getting sad but it wasn't until Discord shows up with his swirly eyes that she's corrupted, same with Pinkie and Rarity.

3. He could turn the Mane 6 into oranges, why does he need to keep their trust? He could just kill them with a gesture but is afraid for no reason that they'll lose trust in him

4. See above

5. Okay, but that doesn't explain why he gave back the wings and horns. Even by his own rules there was no reason for that

6. Discord could have stayed subversive, being sneaky and slowly analyzing the Mane 6 instead of just creating chaos right after being freed. As for your scenario, I would turn the Mane 6 into cookies, eat them, bam, job done

7. Discord wasn't completely sure, he lifts up his sun glasses and looks very worried when they start glowing.

Trolling, no. I'm serious, I never said that Discord failed because he is stupid he failed because he was getting overconfident and his confidence lead to his downfall.

So after watching the season 4 premiere I have to say discord actually is kind of an evil genius with those seeds

Now a big deal is made out of celestail and or luna raising the sun and the moon, In return of harmoney discord does it bam, bam, bam effortlessly.
You, for example, could easily smash your computer with a bullhammer. Bam, bam, bam. Let me guess why you don't do it: at the moment it will feel like fun, but in the long term you know you loose more.

The same with Her Highness and Discord: he doesn't care for the big picture - she does.

Not really. He threw off some evil seeds that would kill something that he couldn't find himself. That takes kindergarten level skills of comprehension
