gaming Should Game consoles go back to the 1980's?

With Game consoles focusing on becoming more like a PC and big end developers shoveling out the same products each year. should we go back 30 years to the 1980's?

I would focus on getting games consoles and developer attitudes to that time but graphically, it does not matter.

This hit me after ready a PS4 vs XBONE debate and it got me wondering, will a step back be a step forward?

I would like to hear what you have to say, I will be talking about this some more soon too.

i've heard alot folks wish game developers would put more effort into gameplay over graphics, like how they try making FPS games like movies rather than just a bloody FPS.

just start the game and shoot lol.

NO! NO! NO!

Alright, I'm aware of the gaming gems from the 80's, but if consoles went back to the 80's, the market would be flooded with shitty games and porn games for the Atari VCS and shitty movie licensed games from LJN on the NES. Then again, I was born in 2000 and I'm getting all this stuff from the AVGN, so this opinion might not be valid to any of you 80's nintendrones

Trust me, The amount of porn games now is greater than back then, mainly due to the fact they are more easy to make and cost little to develop

I think I'd rather keep with today's games.

Not only the graphics is better, but the general gameplay element is. (for me..)

I mean, come on, Who doesn't like to play with other people around the world sometimes?

So yeah. Even if there is those typical games like Call of Duty that repeat themselves all the time, for me the games are better.

(Call of Duty is still pretty bad though..)

The only thing I would like consoles to do is to try and differentiate themselves from one another. Obviously, I'm not talking about the WiiU, but the 360 and the PS3 have a kind of same-ish vibe to them, haven't played XBONE or PS4 so I can't judge them. Now if we were to look back to even the generation prior to the 360, Wii, PS3 we notice that all 3 major consoles despite sharing some games had a radically different variety of games on them, which gave them each a distinct feel to them.

Yes, James Rolph who is the Angry Video Game Nerd did admit that he does exaggerate in a lot of those videos for the sake of comedic effect but that yes some of the games he reviews really do suck that bad but again his character focuses on that for the sake of comedy so there are plenty of really good old school games as well. He even reviewed Super Mario Bros 3 once and made all sorts of satanic jokes about how it was so good that it was a sin and stuff like that. Yes there was an explosion of porn games for a little while back then (and I am sure in the pants of some very lonely and desperate people as well) but there are way way more of them out there today than back then, hell I even played some of them.

Yes and no, yes there were a lot of great things from the 80's and 90's and I think gaming companies should learn from their successes but should also remember the flaws and failures from back then as well and the same goes for games made more recently. One thing I don't like about today's consoles though is the overemphasis on packing as many bells and whistles into them as humanly possible which drags down the performance of them by making them do far too many things while the most important thing should be the games themselves. Extra features are great but, is it really necessary to pack everything but the kitchen sink into a console? I don't think so, look at the Wii it was the most successful console of the last generation yet it had the fewest extra features. It did so because Nintendo remembered that the most important thing was the games themselves and though they lagged behind in grabbing third party games and some of the early wii games had some very awkward controls had excellent first party titles and were able to tap into and help create a market for casual gamers. And I am saying this as someone whose favorite console in the last generation is the Playstation 3.

I don't think that he meant go back to the 80's hardware wise rather as a process of thought. However, I think late 90's to early 00's would be better. That's the golden age of gaming in my book. However I'd support moving back to the mindframe of the 80's simply because anything is better than today's game devs.

I'd rather they make games like how they were between the 16-bit and the XCube2 eras, since I feel like those games had the most innovation in the industry. Make games that actually feel like game instead of interactive movies, stop trying to compete with Hollywood

I would like gaming in general to back to the early 2000's because thats when I had the fondest memories of gaming. Playing Half-Life and Grand Theft Auto back then was pretty much the only I did outside of school. Today, its all pay for online services bullshit on all platforms except PC

According to your profile... you were still sucking your thumb in the early 2000's.

To be precise, those gaming memories are from 2005, when I didnt suck my thumb for 5 years at that point, so STFU

No, the types of games they made back in the 80s/early to mid 90s just can barely even hold my attention anymore.

Like UberAntics, I'd much rather see a return to the early 2000s (and late 90s).

So you were playing GTA and Half Life at the age of five? Either you have some wonderful parents or you're full of it.

I wouldn't mind if they started exterminating more like companies used to in the 90s, that era may have turned out a lot of junk, but a least it was interesting junk that verged on "so bad it's good" instead of just plain bad.

I also wouldn't mind FMV games having a bit of a comeback.

Nobody wants to join me in the 70's. I sad now. :(

Nah.

The only real thing with old games is that restrictions sometimes do wonders for creativity. Not always, but sometimes having a barrier you have to work around as a creator can inspire the most interesting things.

If the game consoles went back to the 1980s, not only would there still be some disputes over company rights with the games but we would be going backwards instead of going forwards with hardware and having to start from the beginning. Most of the generation that we have now wouldn't be familiar with the games from the 1980s. So, no.

Actually, my favorite generation of games were the ones in the early 2000's (GBA, Gamecube)

Kinda stupid, but those were the best. They didn't have a billion other little things attached to them (internet browsing, netflix) They were just games.
