Hm, I think I will draw some Soarin-Dash now! I think the hind leg is attributed to the style. Somewhat like other artists, he or she probably portrays ponies as equines, so the style of an actual horse is applicable; of course, this is all just a hypothesis.

 

This picture is pretty nicely done... I like how the image is open to interpretation, instead of having a direct show of relationship. It can either be they are actually IN a relationship, or Rainbow Dash got one of those hang-out-with-the-wonderbolts tickets.
