Are people expecting too much from season 4?

It's actually pretty normal for anyone to expect too much for a season. We fans have high expectations for each season and sometimes the episodes/seasons didn't exactly meet up with those hopes. Everypony has their own opinions on what to find out and expect from upcoming seasons.

 

Sometimes, they're pretty much a hit and miss and if they don't meet up with fans' wishes, they just come up with the same expectations and predict new ones in the process.

Season 4 has been quite a lot of randomness so far, many over the top silly things have happened at some episodes. It doesn't feel like the "slice of life show" anymore, what I'm trying to say is fairly simple, the show used to be more in depth a while ago. Strongly focused over characters' feelings rather than what was happening around them, now it's more about events, without enough character development OVER the character the episode is supposed to be about. That being the reason why it feels like there's wasted potential, with very blurry lessons almost forcefully shoved into the plot.

It really does feel more like the fans' season rather than anything else, with lots of fan service flavor, which we already had anyway with the community, 'cause let's be honests, it seems like season 4 is made by fans rather than proper writers, really. So we have the community and season 4, both feeling like complements to each other. While some time ago the show had a lot of personality by its own merit, along with much stonger plots, enough to stand by itself, of course with many exceptions, since there're many writers as well. And then, the "fan" community BEING nothing but a complement to the show.


So, yeap, Season 4 is taking a lot of its "strength" so to say, from the community, rather than being an strong show by itself. You'll notice that, specially If you're looking for introspective experiences with each character, otherwise you won't. At the moment the writer team seems to be quite a bit lost.  
It's just the show doesn't feel that relatable anymore. It doesn't own strengh by itstelf, so it's taking it from somewhere else, and that isn't necessarily a good thing.

Even though season 4 is more than half way through, there is still a lot to be seen. But it has been so far, quite a lot of fanservice along with some fairly weak plots, of course with certain exceptions, but a weak season nonetheless.

To be honest, they could be doing more with Alicorn Princess Twilight than they have been. But personally, I think Season 4 most resembles Season 1 in its overall feel and focus on slice of life episodes. I'm quite happy with most of the episodes, only "Daring Don't" has been a really problematic episode for me. The rest are kind of nitpicky.

 

I think the problem most people have with Season 4 is a result of the fans themselves simply growing older and changing their perspective, although I couldn't really give concrete examples of it.

I've been overwhelmed by how great it's been, to be honest. I waltzed into the season really nervous about how Rarity was going to be. I've always taken personal offense to Rarity hate, given people usually relate to their best pony in some (or many) ways, I take it as an attack on my person, as well as I also view it as someone talking badly about a family member or really good friend.   

 

But damn!    She's been FANTASTIC!   

 

She's received hella praise this season, which is just...amazing!!

 

While I do have a few problems with it (Princess Twilight not being like a princess, "Flight to the Finish" and "Rainbow Falls" were really bad episodes, etc.) I feel that it's been amazing for the most part, and I was incredibly nervous walking into this season, so what's that tell ya about my expectations?

 

But yeahh, man, I'm extremely happy with S4, and my expectations have been beyond exceeded thus far

The only things I'm really expecting is the Applejack, Fluttershy, and Twilight episodes, and the season finale ending with something real good

I did not expect a hell lot of things when i started watching it, but still, i'm not really intertained as much as on the other seasons, but it isn't bad at all, i'm just, not really intertained. (Fangirled when weird al yankovic voiced cheese sandwich)

Yes, I think we are expecting too much. Bronies seem to think that FIM is high drama, when at the end of the day it's just a kids show.

I personally wasn't expecting much at all however, I'm so far really impressed with the season
