In the S5 finale, the ponies fought with only spears and their bare hooves, with Celestia and Sombra fighting with their magic, so I think spears are the most common weapon.

They're not that big on the military side because most threats can be dealt with by either using the magical power of Friendship on 'em to make them their friends, or using a lot of magic. I don't know any other race than Crystal Ponies and Shadow Ponies, (whatever King Sombra is,) that can also use magic. I mean, you can't really kill anything if that thing is levitating you 10 feet above the ground.

 

But if they did put lots of bits into the military, they might invent some pretty nasty weapons. Pegasi can be equipped with lightweight blades on their hooves to use cut-'n-fly strategies. Dive-bombing will get pretty scary for the enemy with those.

Also, imagine Spike sitting on the back of Rainbow Dash, spewing fire everywhere. That's pretty scary as well.

I highly doubt the party cannon emphasizes that there are cannons used in battle (guns came from fireworks after all, the party cannon could just be like fireworks and not a weapon). But if we go by that logic swords would exist because Little Pip was holding a plastic sword for his costume though I would say much of that is hindsight, something put as part of being a children's cartoon and putting a pirate costume with a plastic sword in halloween something children relate to.

Surprised to see that nobody mentioned the bows that the ice archers used during the Equestria Games.  They look like they're designed to be placed on the ground of course, but I'm sure they're light enough to be carried until they're ready to be used.

 

Also, I'd like to point out that the pegasi and unicorns have it easier when it comes to using weapons.  Unicorns can just levitate the weapon they're using, and pegasi can carry a weapon in their hooves while airborne so that it doesn't impede their mobility.

 

Finally, cannons may be canon, so to speak, but more portable firearms are probably not, as we've never seen one.  If they existed, we would definitely have seen them employed during the Sombra battle in the Season 5 finale.  Also, some people might point out that Rainbow Dash mentions bullets during the song in "May The Best Pet Win", but the term 'bullet' was used for hundreds of years prior to any firearms existing (it was often used to describe sling ammunition).  It's just like how the term 'missile' was used to describe a wide variety of ranged projectiles.

Twilight looks like she might be getting some saddle mounted weaponry. It'll probably be something along the lines of mechanical limbs that can deal some serious damage. If they bring that kind of thing in the show that would be pretty awesome.

Think of how Grenades were restricted to only specialized Grenadiers in the military past before being moved to being a side weapon for all soldiers, yeah?

 

 

I mean, what really moved guns into the mainstream was the fact that bayonets allowed rifles to function both as a ranged weapon and a spear when closed to melee or against calvary charges. but Ponies would really only be able to use Guns for long ranged purposes, yeah? Meaning that most gun units would function as specialized long distance units or for anti-air.

I think ponies can hold weapons but not as well as humans can. They are shown holding spears but not really using it. Twilight was fascinated by her human hands after all in EG universe and she was more prone to use her mouth than her hands in the beginning like how she signed with a pen in her mouth.

I know that this is 6 years later, but I had come up with a design that instead of holding the gun themselves, they could end up doing something where they have their 2 front hooves in a chariot, and the chariot had guns connected to it. It has a button on it to fire, and then 2 buttons (or more) to switch weapons. Could also have a few buttons for grenades and such. Manufacturing could all be done by unicorns with magic, and anybody can use them. You could even use them in flight, as the chariot is wrapped around the neck (more like a plow with wheels), and possibly midsection harness.
