Non-Male Bronies LET ME HEAR YOU!

Eloquence

Recommended Posts

Nothing, but nothing, grinds my gears quite like being told that all/most bronies are men. I feel erased, which is dumb, because My Little Pony is a really important show for women and feminism and whatnot, and I think genderqueer people get erased more than enough as it is without also getting erased from their happy colorful fluffy pony fandom.

So, people of the non-male persuasion, I want to hear your stories about being in the sadly overlooked (and not minority) part of this fandom! Anything related to your experiences as a non-male brony.

Questions you can address include

  • Have you ever felt ignored/left out due to your gender?
  • How do you feel about people making jokes about bronies with the implication that bronies are strictly male?
  • Do you think a lot of people in this fandom believe in the "fake nerd girl" myth?
  • Have you ever felt unsafe in this fandom, and how do you feel about the growing stigma that the fandom is an unsafe place for non-males?
  • Anything else you would like to discuss

1. A little. When talking about the demographics of the show people often only focus on the young female fans or the adult male fans. I can see why though, the male bronies are focused on so much because their liking to the show seems odd for a lot of people.

2. It doesn't bother me much. The male brony jokes are often funnier anyway.

3. I never heard of the "fake nerd girl" thing in regards to this fandom. Female bronies may be forgotten about sometimes but when people do notice us we get treated equally.

4. I never even thought about the fandom as "unsafe." How can a fandom reloved around magical talking ponies be considered unsafe?

5. I can't think of anything else to say.

I probably should have clarified that. When I say 'jokes' I mean 'insults about how stupid and pathetic bronies are'

This one was largely tumblr-inspired. There's quite a number of social justice """warriors""" over there who claim that our fandom is full of people who spend all their time making sure there's as much pornographic material in places easily accessible to little girls as possible *eye roll*

There's porn of tons of kid oriented media. It's not mlp fim exclusive. I hate when people use that as an insult to how disgusting/creepy they think bronies are. And not all bronies are into that either.

Not on this forum, but I've been bashed a few times over at RoosterTeeth.

How do you feel about people making jokes about bronies with the implication that bronies are strictly male?

That doesn't bother me. The whole "Bronies are gay" thing is stupid though.

Do you think a lot of people in this fandom believe in the "fake nerd girl" myth?

I'm not quite sure what you mean. I've pretty much been a "Nerdgirl" long before I joined this fandom.

Have you ever felt unsafe in this fandom, and how do you feel about the growing stigma that the fandom is an unsafe place for non-males?

Not a problem. I'm a serious anime fan. I once accidentally ended up with a lot of guys following me at a CON. They were trying to see what DVD I had just bought from a "Hentai" table. I didn't feel threatened with that. Just embarrassed.

Anything else you would like to discuss

I do wish the term Pegasister caught on. I rather like it!

The DVD was titled "Parade Parade". B)

I like more male brony spaces. I gave female brony spaces a shot and just found them irritating because it was just non-stop complaining about how male bronies ruined MLP forever. Too much feminist politics and silencing if you disagreed for my taste.

  • Have you ever felt ignored/left out due to your gender? Well, a little. But, honestly, I could care less. Besides, I've always found males funnier, and just flat out easier to get along with than girls...even though I'm a girl...

  • How do you feel about people making jokes about bronies with the implication that bronies are strictly male? Don't care, but I wish more female bronies were recognized in the fandom.

Do you think a lot of people in this fandom believe in the "fake nerd girl" myth? Hm...I dunno, really.

Have you ever felt unsafe in this fandom, and how do you feel about the growing stigma that the fandom is an unsafe place for non-males? Absolutely not. This fandom is full of friendly men and women, and I feel perfectly safe.

Anything else you would like to discuss? I seriously have only female OC's...Which I find to make me stand out a bit.

I'm a dude, but I wanted to drop by to point out BroniesAgainstBullshit over on Tumblr is doing a project like this as well to get the female voices heard and spark some meaningful discussion about the subject. So it might be good to shoot some of your stories and opinions to them as well if you have a Tumblr account.

Personally, I've found that it's strictly gendered spaces altogether that are the issue, regardless of which gender the space is for. They each seem to bring their own issues, and they strike me as totally unhelpful. This fandom should be about breaking down gender barriers, so why would fandom spaces go about constructing them?

I remember hearing about that blog recently. Feminismismagic (another nifty tumblr-blog) mentioned them in a post or something, and I believe I gave them a (extremely) cursory glance but didn't have time for much more than that. I'll totally go back and give the blog a closer look now though :D

FiM is okay and I respect what she does and have had quite pleasant interactions with her, but I'm not fond of some of the blogs she promotes(mainly ponies-against-bronies, which is a straight up hate blog with a fluffy coat of paint)

But yeah, BAB is a really nice blog.

Yeah, I did notice that one too among her promotions. The name alone was more than enough to give me pause. I'm really not comfortable with fans who openly mock and demean bronies, as it makes me feel like these people are trying to control who can identify as what and change the fandom by dissociating it from the term it's most commonly known by, which of course doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of actually helping anything.

I think she can be... misguided at times. She strikes me as someone who's kind of young and trying to do the right thing in the confusing world of tumblr, and I wish her luck 'cause I know she'll need it.

I know I'm a dude, just a quick little statement, no rock throwing please!

Having been to bronycon, I can say definitively that there are many females in the fandom. That's all, by now!

Don't you worry about it at all! This is a place to talk about women and non-binary bronies, and just because you're a guy doesn't mean you can't contribute something constructive like this.

Now, if you came charging in here all "This space is un-inclusive and I FEEL OPPRESSED!", that'd be a different story, but your polite input is more than welcome here :3

Well thank you, my lady. *insert bow here*

Having talked with several women bronies by this point, I can say that, minority or not, you all certainly seem just as "present" in the fandom as the rest of us. Even several big name brony artists that have attained considerable status are women. Nowaking, Feather, Elliemonty, Decibelle, Mad Munchkin, Pony Poetess, just to name a few.

Yeah, and the fact she's referred to it as "positive" really rubs me the wrong way and makes question her judgement. I honestly like her posts and intentions, but I fear me and her would not see eye-to-eye on a lot of ideological things, because she seems to have some SJW tendencies.

Well...I think male bronies were just so unexpected and people deem it unusual we exist. I think that's the main thing that makes us a greater focus. But bronies themselves are aware of female bronies/Pegasisters. I'm sorry if you feel ignored. But, hey, you girls are everywhere! I was at Comicon today. I can't begin to describe how many more females I saw than males. There's definitely a great number of you guys, but as I said, the average person seems to think "Girls enjoy MLP? Okay." as opposed to "Guys like MLP? Wow, gay. Stay away from those freaks."

In a sense, that makes most fans of MLP appear male because that's all anyone talks about. People think it natural for girls to like MLP, so, the focus isn't on them.

At least that's what I think it is. Anyway, I know you're there, and I'll still acknowledge all of you equally.

1. Yeah, I have felt like that before. :(

2. Ugh, it's really annoying. Not the joke thing, I like jokes that poke fun at fandoms and stuff. It justs sucks that they make stereotypical jokes about men with neckbeards. There are ladies here too!

3. Yeah, I do. Well, not on these forums, but I've been asked by bronies if I know "So what is Deadpool's real name?" "How does Twilight become an alicorn?" "Who were the members of the Fellowship?" Nothing is as annoying as being called a fake nerd.

4. Yeah I have. The guys of the fandom have told me things too dirty and disgusting for me to post. It's despicable.

5. I really hope that stigma dies down, and that the men of the fandom (not all, please, I've met very great male bronies) become mature and stop acting like jerks.  :eww:

Hey, @Eloquence. Your topic was moved from General Discussion to Sugarcube Corner, as it discusses the fandom. Sugarcube Corner is for pony-related things such as this issue that do not directly involve Friendship is Magic.

I'm a guy so I can't give you good answers to those questions, but I do want to say that I have personally never, ever discriminated against female bronies. That's just downright silly. I don't care what your gender is, if you like the show, you do, and that's great. If you don't, you don't, and that's fine too.

Female brony here! I'm with SCS on this one, I really don't care about gender. If you're a guy, that's cool with me, if you're a girl that's also cool with me.

Okay, I'm male, and I know the answers to most of those questions, except for Deadpool's real name. I've never read or seen a Deadpool comic or Tv show.

It's Wade Wilson. :D

That's ok, a lot of people don't know.

I don't really have time to answer the questions. xD

I'm a girl (14) and I call myself a brony. Some other girls who are fans of the show that I'm RL friends with say that brony, just the term, is used mostly for guys and they call themselves "pegasisters". I've personally found the name a big more clumsy and not as cool sounding as brony, and also find it a bit more feminine (I'm a "nerdy", tomboyish sort of girl) so that's why I use the word brony to describe myself as a fan of MLP. It's not that I don't like pegaisister, just that. I don't like the term to describe myself. *shrug*

  • Have you ever felt ignored/left out due to your gender? In some ways I have, the city I live in has a group that goes to meet ups and they all hangout together, and yet I get left out most of the time, and not even invited, being that I am one out of 4 other girls in the group, we found out none of us get invited along to anything, which his horribly frustrating.

  • How do you feel about people making jokes about bronies with the implication that bronies are strictly male? In some ways I can understand that people think bronies are strictly male since the small amount of media that usually shows bronies is usually all about the male group,

  • Do you think a lot of people in this fandom believe in the "fake nerd girl" myth? I can't say for sure, I know even as a girl I believe in the fake nerd girl myth, because I am friends with some of those girls who pretend to be super geeky and yet know nothing about the topics that they pretend to know so much about. Example: My friend has a lot of batman merch, and claims she knows everything about the batman comics and such, yet when I asked her to give me the names of 5 batman villains who have never appeared in a movie and that includes the original batman movie, She couldn't she named Catwoman, the penguin, and mr.freeze, and was dead serious, then finally admitted she doesn't know anything but fakes it because its trendy.

  • Have you ever felt unsafe in this fandom, and how do you feel about the growing stigma that the fandom is an unsafe place for non-males? I don't buy that for a second, I may of felt excluded but never have I ever felt unsafe in this fandom, I can't understand how it could be unsafe.
