There's a lot of books that bored me to death(then again, I'm not much of a book reader) but the only one that was a huge pain in the arse was Candide. The extra credit wasn't worth it

I recall a book by the name of "The Tomorrow Code."

I spent about half the book unable to comprehend what was going on.

The ending easily takes the cake.

I was reading it in class, and the ending was so baffling that I just dropped the book and yelled 'I quit.'

Romeo & Juliet

The Hunger Games

Battlefield Earth: A Saga of the Year 3000

All three of these are horrible IMO. They were just... PAINFUL to read

Handmaid's Tale. Totally NSFW, worst ending ever, way to much swearing, belittling of women...ugh....felt like I wanted to throw that book in the fire after I finished it. Don't read it.

Romeo & Juliet

Now hold on there... Romeo and Juliet's a book?

Well, whatever. You know, I suddenly feel like starting on my fanfiction or something. Just to see how I compare to these 'worst books ever read'. If I get myself even slightly above the standard provided here I'll be crying from joy... :P

I'm also surprised no one mentioned Twilight. I haven't read it myself, but the book's supposedly really bad.

A lot of Shakespeare's plays were turned into books simply because not everyone understands or cares about the play format.

Also, Twilight was mentioned. More than once. :P

  • Ah, I didn't know about that. So was it the book itself that was bad or did you dislike the entire concept?
  • Huh yeah, it was. I noticed right after I posted that...

Oh I've never read R&J myself. The only reason I know of it's existence is because people make a HUGE deal about Shakespeare's stuff. I was merely pointing out that R&J, along with many of his other works, are largely published in book form.

I've heard someone else mention that The Handmaid's Tale was the worst book they've ever read also; he had to read it for school, and he hated it, thought it was the worst book ever. Personally, though, when I read it, for school, I didn't think it was a bad book at all. The sexual content in it is not pornographic or for any kind of erotic purpose, but it serves to forward the plot. I don't really remember the ending very well, but for me a book isn't ruined if it doesn't have a good ending. It's nice if it has a good ending, but I don't really think of the ending as being the most important part of the book or any more important than the rest of it, so if the ending's bad but the rest of it's good, then I don't think of it as being bad. It's been a while since I've read it, but I don't think the book uses swearing gratuitously; that is, it doesn't swear unless it's for a reason, unlike some authors who just throw in swear words left and right with no reason. And as for the belittling of women, this book is a critique against the belittling of women; Margaret Atwood is a huge feminist author. Although, I can understand someone finding the plot and writing style kind of hard to follow due to the novel's non-chronological writing and the use of stream of consciousness technique. I found the stream of consciousness technique intriguing, though. This book definitely isn't the best book I've read, and I wouldn't go around telling people to read it, but I just wanted to share my opinion on why I think it's not that bad of a book.

Twilight series. Oh man my mom made me pick it up and I saw the font and it was size 25.

Never touching that tweeny money-grabbing book again.

The knife of never letting go

It is the first book I couldn't read all the way through. At first it was amazing lore everything was perfect except the main character. He has a loyal ass dog who does whatever he wants but he hates it because he wanted the family knife for his twelfth birthday okay not that bad maybe he'll learn to love the dog okay later on they find this girl and yaddle yadda the government goes after them because potatoes and all the girl does is bitch and complain about everything okay O can see some future character devolpment okay then at one point the girl is captured so the dog and the main character go save her but it's either her the bitch who gets you in situations like this or the dog who has been loyal the entire who got his tail chopped off face burned ear ripped to save your sorry little ass and guess who he picks

Also the dog can talk and his last words are "Todd" the main characters name and gets his head chopped off it was utterly disgusting

@@Something Floaty, the Telegraph said 'It was kind of reminiscent of the Norse'. The Times said 'Kind of turgid, but I liked the bit with horses'. The Mail said 'Lots of massacres; a violent tour de force!' If you only read one book this year then this one is a book. And it's good and it's a book!

Actually, I don't think I can really sum up one single book I'd consider the worst, though I do have a bit of a number one out of a list of a few:

  1. Atlas Shrugged
  2. The Hunger Games
  3. Fallout: Equestria
  4. Life of Pi

The Redwall books.  I managed to finish the first one, but quit halfway through the second.  I mean, I know they were meant for kids, but the author could at least plan ahead more than a few pages.  And the way the different animals act seems oddly racist somehow...

Atlas Shrugged was also pretty terrible, but I actually found it to be *hilariously* bad for the most part, so I managed to get all the way through it.  But it's a little scary when you consider that a lot of people actually base their life philosophy and politics on it...

The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan, hands down.  Other notables: As I Lay Dying by Faulkner, anything by Jane Austen.

Disclaimer: I acknowledge that these authors are talented.  I'm not saying the books are garbage, I just found them boring as hell and did not enjoy them.

I don't mean to derail the thread, but I don't like ending on a sour note, so I just want to list my favorites real quick.

Dune by Herbert, Black Jewels by Anne Bishop.

Ok that's all.  Bye.

I hate Christopher Pike (if I remember if that was his name) books. His books are predictable and if they were better written then they would be much better. I mean- I have one of his books, Remember (thats the title me thinks) and it would have been perfect if they didn't continue to use the same plot as 100000000 other ghost books. Hell-Before I fall from the creator of Delirium has the same plot but its unique and kind of reminds me of Lovely Bones. Not only this, but the writing is choppy and filled with errors that I couldn't stand.

It's a toss-up between the first Harry Potter book and the first Twilight book.

...I think it would go to Twilight; at least Harry Potter looks like the writer and/or the editor completed 8th grade English.

50 Shades of Grey...Just pure tacky. I have read way more sexier, erotic and taboo then that waste of paper trash.

I write better Erotica...

Anywho,I think the hunger games and the fault in our stars is bad, mainly cause I don't care much for the style

Harry Potter is a great book series. Sure, the first one wasn't the best, but the later ones are so much better.

Back on topic, definitely Twilight. I read the first 10 chapters and cried myself to sleep.

That is, of course, your opinion.  Mine is that the first book was too boring to finish, and therefore unworthy of completion.
