If Twilight was incapacitated or killed, who would become leader of the mane 5?

AJ is the second most mature and capable of the Mane Six, I'd go so far as to argue that she still is first over Twilight. But I don't see her as the type who would lead if necessary. Honestly, if Twi was taken out of the equation I don't think the group would have a center at that point. They'd just be ordinary friends.

Let's be realistic here; there wouldn't be a leader. In all of their slice of life episodes, you can imagine them being totally equal in terms of leadership. Twilight is simply the most rational  So the other 5 would just be themselves. In fact, electing a leader of their little group in place of Twilight might be in bad taste to them. :3

Twilight isn't really the leader of the mane 6. I don't think there's even one.

 

What gives that impression (of being the leader) is that she's the main character of the show (the season 1 premiere focused on her).

I would definitely say Applejack like many others had said. Mostly due to her honesty and generally how she behaves. Some traits that she has is very valuable to the leader and some can be a double-edge sword (honesty as sometimes you have to lie.)

 

Now while some say that the group doesn't have a "leader." Twilight Sparkle seems to take the exact position of being a leader as it feels to me that she is subconsciously elected as the head. It is that informal leadership that has yet to be spoken of, but the leader has already been elected without any form of discussion.

Was Twilight really the leader to begin with? The other 5 seem like they could do just fine without Twilight if they needed to.

 

More like... If Twi was missing in action and the other 5 had to rescue her, the first stage would be to make a plan. AJ and RD have initiative and I'm sure AJ and Rarity would put a damper on RD's brashness. AJ would work out the broader parts of the plan and Rarity would be the one to fine-tune things. They know that Rainbow Dash would want to be where the action is, Rarity doing finer work, Fluttershy with gentler tasks or those that make use of her talents and AJ would end up doing the dirtier tasks which may overlap with RD.

 

I would say that AJ would have the most input, especially in the early stages of action but without Twilight, they could miss obscure but otherwise important facts.

Applejack feels more like leader material than any other. I wouldn't even say Twilight is the leader now. Pretty much every single episode has the character that it's about taking charge with the others happily following. Only major exception I can think of straight away is Dragonshy. People just say Twilight as the openers and finales focus on her.

Who said there was a leader in the first place tho? In the show, there is no such thing as "The Mane 6". Just a group of friends. I feel lke the fandom has mutated Twilight into some kind of "leader" while the show never states she's the leader now does it? We never heard Celestia say, "Yo this is your team now lead it" She said they were friends and not that she was their superior.

 

Just because she's an alicorn or got the element of magic doesn't give her power over her friends...

Applejack. When Twi isn't there with them, AJ usually naturally becomes a leader. She's like a mother of the group and her down-to-earth personality makes her a good choice. Rainbow Dash and Rarity would probably help her sometimes, but Rainbow can be too harsh and Rares too dramatic to even feel good in that role. Of course, AJ has her flaws, but Twilight also isn't always the best example of the leader, so... none of them is perfect.

 

But, as said above, Twi isn't really their leader. The Elements are strong, because they're together and no matter who is left out, they're not the same without one of them. They all have their roles and every one of them is important.

People are getting too fixated on the word "leader". There is no leader of the friends, but they often look to Twilight for leadership and there is a difference. Even before she became a princess, when they were in need they would look to Twilight and in her absence AJ. Heck Rartity even said outloud, in Princess Twilight Sparkle 2, that they were lost without Twilight. I know that dialogue might burst some bubbles and head canons, but it's perfectly true and show canon. What does this all mean? I guess just that Twilight is willing to step up, but also perfectly happy to be in the background and just a friend, especially being the Princess of Friendship.

It would definitely fall to Applejack, not just because of her role in the Season 4 premiere but because she seems to be the wisest, most level-headed of the group who has also taken charge of her family in the absence of her parents. Notwithstanding her roles in "Apple Family Reunion", "Somepony to Watch Over Me", or the wishes of Rarity fanboys.
