general media So, I got banned from Smashboards and don't know why...

Hello, forumgoers! I came back here for forum-related help, because this is the only Forum site I've ever been a part of other than the one in question, and also because you people are notoriously kind. :)

So, I've banned for having alternate accounts. Just one is against the rules, but apparently a check on my IP address says I have six. The thing is, I don't recall ever creating such an account. What could be the problem?

@, have you ever allowed someone else to sign in while using your Wi-Fi? That could be the problem...

No one else at my house has an account, but I do go on there on my phone at school. It's possible that some people at my school have an account on there.

Well........as an Admin/Mod from several sites, I can inform you that you may have created several, but they are what some call, "bait" accounts.  May sound complicated, however, it is a common rule to have alternate accounts and believe me, i've suspended over 100 alter accounts throughout websites b/c most of them were "bait" accounts for spamming and potential cyber threat to the site.   Similar to what we had a few weeks ago, where someone probably wanted to get "revenge" by hacking into the server and attempt to pull the plug on the site.   Now, if you don't remember when you created those accounts, do the following, b/c it will become handy:

  • Open MS Word
  • Open Email
  • Search Website Activation MSGs (this is where you have to activate your account after signing up)
  • Go through the list and from 1st account to 6th account, write the dates, so you can investigate when you created the accounts
  • Also, if you used your email again for those accounts (which is impossible to do, IMO), then........that's the problem.

BTW, take it from me, I was actually an "invisible" mod on Smashboards, by one of the admins, but left due to some stupidity of mods and them making false accusations.

@, where did you create your account, School or Home? cause if it was made in school, that would also spark some red flags.

I don't think location would cause that, IMO.  I've logged into this site several times outside my house and on different PC's, but this is something new to me, tbh.

I'm sure that I created it at my house.

You know, it may be a mistake! Sometimes, people are accidentally banned for something they didn't do. If you don't recall ever making these accounts, try making an email to the website, tech support, etc.

hmmmmmm......I want to ask, is your account visible on SmashBoards.  If so, let me know the account Display names, that way i can see what i can do.  They are already down shit creek with moderation so might as well, see what happened.

My name on there is "Shalashaska".

@Princess PeachBlink

I sent a message to the moderator who banned me, asking what I had done wrong. He explained that I had six alternative accounts. I replied, asking how that could have happened, as I had no memory of doing so. I have yet to receive another response.

Do you remember the other accounts.  If you don't ask the mod, to PM you the list of "supposed" alter accounts.

I don't remember any other accounts, and not just specifically. I don't recall creating any, ever. I'll see if the mod responds to another message.

You may want to go through your e-mail accounts and see. I'm not sure which one is your 1st account because obviously if the admins and mods made a false ban for alternative accounts reason then probably the alternative accounts must've been coming from different IPs if i'm right and then the hackers must've used your e-mail for that reason to make alternative accounts. If you had 1 account, then you probably have 2 e-mails which is 1 your main e-mail and the other would be your alternative e-mail.

Okay.......btw, don't tell them, but last time I visited there, the mod roster was simple and small.    I have no idea what was running through their minds, but they have the worst mod list i have ever seen.   Its is truly unacceptable and ridiculous to have over 83 goddamn mods, when there should only be 25 or 30, depending on the number of members, (5 Website Staff (these guys are the creators of the site), 5 Admins, 5 or 10 Content Mods, 5 Co-Mods (beginner mods, only capable of moving/locking topics)).  Im so blown by their fuckin' roster........*please excuse my english*.   My suggestion, stay away from them, b/c by the looks of it, they have no exp, whatsoever on how to moderate a site.  I'm sorry to break that to you, but its true.

You sure know your stuff! o-o

I'm surprised your not a staff member, to be frank. You could be a good one.

He gave me a list of the accounts. 2 of them are from Sarasota, Florida, and the rest are either inactive or from my state. Also, the account I'm using was allegedly created today, but I've been under the same name since March.

:D   Its what i do for a living other than Networking and VA'ing.  I've done a lot of it on business and misc. forums, but it would be nice if i could be part of staff, but that's for the staff to decide.  So far, they are doing a fine job, but if they are in need of assistance, i would be happy to volunteer.

Sounds like they reacted to the situation instead of investigating it.   What i do, if i run into an alter account, i check the email and password.   That's b/c 75% of the time, the user who gets banned for something will use a similar username and password.   That's why its a common rule, b/c as i mentioned, spammers and bullies.

None of the usernames are remotely similar to mine, and I know for sure that I never created an account under their names. I could try to check their passwords, though, but I don't know how I would go about doing that, as I don't actually have access to their accounts as far as I know.

EDIT: I realized you were referring to Moderators/Admins/Staff checking the passwords. Should I ask this of the Moderator I'm talking to?

Yes.   They also have the power to view passwords, however, since its a entertainment/misc. forum, im just realized, they may not have that option.  Most Business sites have it, b/c there are some cases where the admin has to send the password b/c the automated one may not work.    Ask them, what are the emails for the accounts and the passwords.   Yet, make sure you have word open so you can write the account name, username and password, then go down the next account and repeat the process.  If they are similar in anyway then that's the answer why you got banned for alter accounts.

I'm still fairly sure that they are convinced that I am the same person as all of them, so apparently they aren't investigating it.

EDIT: Received a new message from the mod.

"Upon further inspection, that seems to be when the user last posted, not when they joined. Either way, it's still 6 accounts under the same IP so either 1. you have five siblings who are all into Smash (which is extremely unlikely anyways but is made more so by the fact that several of the accounts are from entirely different geographical locations according to their profiles) or 2. you have a bunch of friends who are all using your PC (again, extremely unlikely). Unless you can provide substantial evidence that these five other people are not you, the ruling stands because ALTs are explicitly against the rules."

Apparently, what I need is proof.

Well apparently you seem to got hacked (or somewhat). It's impossible to have 5 siblings in your household if you're the only one in the family in the household. if a sibling or friend used your e-mail to make alternative accounts, that may be one of your problems because you can't allow them to use your e-mail.

Well, he's right and wrong at the same time.

Right - He went in depth to investigate the issue, which now surprised me, b/c i got stuck doing that, trying to resolve other members issues.

Wrong - Last post the user made doesn't me squat.  He should've worried about Date/Time of Sign-Up, and lastly similarities to the other alter accounts.  In addition, you can log in at the same account at the same location without a problem and also, you can't "scan" what IP a user is using (the only thing he could do is ping there server, but won't give them the answer) only, us (Network Administrators) have that power to view them, b/c we are the ones who establish it.  Its a long story, but pretty much what the mod told you is "half-ass" but decent.

HINT: Just want to ask you a favor...........do not mention me, at all.  B/c they will become suspicious and then realize you are talking to me.  That's b/c i wrote them up for false accusations.

I have that feeling as well.   Very common on a forum, :)
