  1. Link to full episode One other thing I noticed in contrast to the MLP movie was how the Mane 6 worked together when the balloon crashed instead of Twilight doing everything which shows she learned since the last film. The sonic rainboom looks great too.
  2. True, if he knows better he needs to correct Rarity, but he could have mentioned the geese would not like it without using the snooty tone. He doesn't use snootiness in other episodes so it felt off. When he corrects Twilight he doesn't use that tone as far as I could hear when I rewatched the episode today, so why use it with Rarity?
  3. MLP Rainbow Roadtrip SPOILER ALERT So I just saw “Rainbow Roadtrip”. First off I love the animation. It looks similar to the MLP 2017 movie with the designs like the more horse like ears and fluidity. Frankly its pretty obvious this has a lower budget than the movie because the ponies look rounder, fatter, overall shorter, and the backgrounds even when the color returns seem less impressive. However that’s a nitpick since this was not meant for a theater release. Plot wise the story reminded me of the movie “Pleasantville” where people turn colors when they embrace new parts of themselves. MLP has used color in this way before with “Return Of Harmony” and “Cutie Map”. Whenever a pony does not act like their true self the colors disappear. The friend I was watching the special with remarked that the color in the pony world is a metaphor for living life vibrantly and when ponies stop living vibrantly the vibrant colors are absent. I liked Twilight in the special better than in the movie because she was kind, open minded and helpful like she usually is. I like that Twilight was challenged in the movie and I would not change Twilight in the movie but it’s nice to see her happy rather than stressed in the animation style. I liked how each of the Mane 6 got to do something and I loved seeing a bit of Spike with his wings. When the Hope Hallow mayor finally asked the hotel pony to marry him I was like “Finally!” At first I wondered if she was the secret villain of the story but I’m glad she turned out to be a good pony. I’m also glad that the problem turned out not to have to do with the rainbow maker even if it was a bit cheesy. Some parts of the special dragged when they could have focused more on what exactly made the town lose hope which was not quite focused on enough. When I see plots drag I get the feeling the staff are running out of ideas hence why season 9 is the last season. I also get the sneaking feeling this is like a Toon Boom trial run for G5. If Bronies give the special a hooves up the staff will use Toon Boom and similar plots for G5 and yes I could totally buy this as a scrapped MLP movie sequel as that's what my friend thought. I could see why this was moved to TV release instead of movie release if that's the case since its too basic for a full length movie and kind of what non Bronies stereotype the show as with the rainbows etc like Storm King's "Friendship, flowers ponies bleh" joke in the film.
  4. MLP Between Dark and Dawn I liked this episode. Celestia and Luna desperately need to work on their bonding. I get the impression that Celestia and Luna don’t spend much time together at all because they have different shifts in the night and day which would explain their issues in “Royal Problem”. It was sort of heartbreaking to see them fight in the middle of the episode. They both need to feel needed. I like how their different ideas for a vacation fit perfectly with their characters. Luna needs to get out of the dream world way more. She seems quite isolated judging from the post office scene. As for Twilight, she’s still panicking I see…but I’m glad she got to learn that does actually take a village to run Equestria and she can ask for help. It’s fascinating how the amulet can control the sun and moon. I hope who raises the sun and moon after Celestia and Luna retire gets better addressed this season. The main thing I disliked was Fancy Pants saying Rarity’s choices were not high class enough by his actions and rude comments.
  5. I know many kids of immigrants and the parents having an accent while the kid does not actually happens a lot more than you might think. I know many people from India and Mexico who have their native gorgeous accent but their kids have an American accent because they were immersed in U.S English language sounds. I even know one family where the parents and one sibling have southern accents but the kids born after the family moved north have northern U.S accents. Scootaloo's mom does not have an Australian accent so it makes sense Scootaloo does not as more language tends to be picked up from the mom in the womb and into childhood. Plus Scootaloo is definitely not around them enough to pick up an accent as far as I can tell. As for the living situation I think the aunts spend a lot of time with Scoot but have to go home once in a while to check their own house and have a rotation in place for those times. I can imagine the aunts being close with the Cakes but I agree it is a bit convoluted of a set up.
  6. MLP Last Crusade SPOILER ALERT! I missed the original airing this morning but I managed to find the episode on youtube. This was another touching episode. It was great to see Scootaloo’s parents who appear to be Steve Irwin and Terri Irwin references. I’m glad the series cleared up that Scootaloo was not being emotionally abused by her parents etc. Scootaloo’s relationship to the parents actually reminds me of how President Obama was raised by other family members while his parents explored other pursuits. It was also interesting to see that Scootaloo is part earth pony. I don’t remember if I saw Scootaloo’s mother fly but I’m guessing Scootaloo’s inability to fly is NOT genetic because if her mother could not fly she would not be as insecure I’m guessing. I liked what Scootaloo’s dad said about her cutie mark being both different and similar to the CMC. I liked her aunts. I know there’s talk of Scootaloo’s 2 aunts being a gay couple but there is NOTHING WHATSOEVER in the episode itself to actually suggest they are a married gay couple and I like this for a few reasons. It doesn’t make Scootaloo’s aunts the token gay characters of the series like a lot of other recent gay characters where it feels like they just tack on a minority status to a character to seem relevant and inclusive without really developing the character. If the aunts are meant to be gay I say the MLP staff handled the whole thing with class and grace like Scootaloo’s disability and I hope and pray the show does not get bad press for adding these characters because again unlike other inclusion attempts its not in the audience face. The way the episode ended has me a little torn. I like how Scootaloo’s parents let her stay and that the episode addressed that if Scootaloo’s parents did not give up their jobs for her before in the past, Scootaloo should not be expected to give up her job. At the same time Scootaloo moving away would have been more realistic, especially since this is the last season, and may have given the CMC the ability to help others in other locations like they wanted to a few seasons ago when they thought they were running out of cutie mark problems.
  7. MLP School Council SPOILER ALERT! This was a sweet episode with a good lesson about balancing friendship and work. It will totally resonate with older fans who have jobs. I had a sweet teacher that behaved much like Starlight at the beginning and would always tell him to kick me out of his office if he had other responsibilities. I like how they also brought in the lesson about not supervising the students 24/7 and letting them be independent since the student 6 are clearly even older than the CMC and should be expected to be independent. It was fantastic to finally see more of the Student 6 tree house on the inside. Trixie’s behavior was understandable and I like how close she and Starlight have become. I loved seeing Sliverstream and Taramar together on screen for more than a moment! MudBrier is still kinda irritating but he’s cute with Maude and better when Pinkie’s not around somehow for me. I was completely surprised to find out the Cokatreecices(not sure of the real spelling sorry) can have a really nice side. The only thing I didn’t like is if the Cokatreecices are nice at times, why did one get locked up in Tartarus in the season 8 finale? Did that one Cokatreecice commit a more serious crime in S8?
  8. MLP Going to Seed I liked this episode very much. It had a very simple story but I was so happy to see an Applejack episode as Applejack is my 2nd favorite. I liked how Applejack got into hunting the great seedling with Applebloom rather than spending 90% of the episode shutting Applebloom’s hopes down. It shows she is still slightly stubborn but not nearly as stubborn as she was in past seasons. She thought of good compromises with Applebloom for getting work done. My favorite part of the episode was the flashback of when Applejack was younger because we finally have another flashback with her parents. We now know that Applebloom was born slightly before Applejack turned the age Applebloom is currently. In case anyone was wondering I think there was something about the parents and/or Applebloom being on vacation during “Where The Apple Lies” in an interview with writers, but the animators should have put Applebloom in that previous episode "Where The Apple Lies" somewhere to clean up the timeline. It was so nice to see the Apple siblings interacting with their parents! It was so nice to see Pear Butter as a fully integrated member of the Apple family. The flashback also provides some good insight into why Applejack places so much responsibility on herself, does such hard work and admires hard work. Well done writers and animators!
  9. MLP Sweet and Smokey. SPOILER ALERT! Another good episode for season 9. I particularly liked the episode’s lesson because it goes into the reasons why a person or dragon in this case, can become a bully in the first place, and showed and a true meaning of strength. Strength was exemplified in Spike who truly was the bigger dragon is showing Grabble such patience. I loved Spike in this entire episode especially when he figured out what was wrong with the eggs. I’m so glad Grabble got some character development beyond a complete stereotype of a bully. I’m glad the show found a good way to bring him back by connecting him to Smolder. This episode proves that she was just joking when she said she had no connection with her brother after his Molt. I’m glad we got to see dragons caring for each other. I loved seeing how much Fluttershy has grown as a character when she defended Spike and how she showed such a deep understanding of Grabble and kindness. I saw in this episode why Twilight made Fluttershy a professor of kindness. My problem with the episode was how Fluttershy never even mentioned how terrified of adult dragons she used to be. I suppose we can assume she just lost a lot of her fear by being around Smolder? Diversity message was a bit forced.
  10. MLP Frenemies SPOILER ALERT!!! I saw the U.S version today as I could not find a reliable version of the Italian dubs of some episodes. I really liked this one too! It was nice to have an episode focusing on Villains for the first time. I think this is also the first time a finale conflict was set up in such a direct way. In season 4 we had the key episodes of course, but that was more of a visual set up whereas this episode sets up characters and conflict. I liked the backstory with Dusty, and how the writers addressed how each Villain has a unique talent that helps the group like the Mane 6 do. Crystalis is shapeshifter, obviously, Tirek is magical strength, and Cozy is planning and manipulation. Cozy’s weakness and one of her funniest traits is what happens to her when she does not get what she wants. I adored the twist ending! I had a sneaking suspicion that Cystalis, Tirek, and Cozy were going to double cross Tirek so I got a huge satisfaction when they kept the bell for themselves. I found it interesting that they enjoyed friendship so I wonder if Crystalis will transform later like her hive did. I cracked up when they compared the magic of friendship to a disease! I wonder if the Student 6 will teach these 3 Villains friendship because like the Villains they are a mixed group?
  11. Well Pinkie DID expose herself to Yak culture by visiting the Yaks for an entire episode and even attempted to learn a Yak instrument. I hope the other ponies do the same soon. The non pony students didn't seem insulted by Twilight's history lessons so for now I assume the lessons are accurate culturally.
  12. Great review! I agree with a ton of this. Especially your remarks on Rarity. In regards to Ponies teaching non pony species cultures, they sort of taught the histories of the other cultures in "Matter Of Principals" when they do the magical treasure hunt and use the object's history to find the object. I also wonder if the ponies stick to teaching what they know culturally after the disastrous reaction the other Yaks had to ponies imitating their culture. The ponies teaching non pony culture beyond fun facts and a little history could be viewed as cultural appropriation. A better way to teach non pony lessons to the students of School Of Friendship would be to have a character from said culture teach it or do field trips or something of that nature. About "So Well Spoken". That's tricky because you have proper ways of speaking in any language that help preserve the language itself and the cultural information contained within the language. But I totally see where you are coming from because my friends and I can't stand when others are irritated by my friend's Indian accents. Since I speak 2 languages I know how hard it is to learn to speak the languages and to have an obvious accent(Born in Russia but developed an American accent LOL). As an immigrant I feel assimilation is okay so long as you don't completely divorce yourself from the culture you originally came from and its voluntary. My fellow immigrant friends have found ways of embracing their current and past cultures fully and it is a beautiful thing. You need to have that balance or something precious is lost. I hope Yona and the other ponies, and non ponies learn that balance.
  13. I have to wonder if this episode was originally going to air later in the season but Discovery Family just happened to air 2 episodes with a similar moral back to back. The production crew does not control release dates. Only Discovery Family does. You make a good point. Yona is interested in the culture she is an exchange student in, and wants to show it respect by learning pony habits. Just like I try to show my friends who are of different religions or who were born in other cultures respect by asking them what their traditions mean and using their greetings and timings for things. That's part of friendship too. Pinkie followed Yak culture the same way in the past. I don't think Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash, Applejack or Pinkie Pie showed any less intelligence. The way Fluttershy took such care and detail in teaching the dance actually showed more of her intelligence. Rarity's flaw was that she tried to turn Yona into a Canterlot style pony almost as if it were the Grand Galloping Gala instead. It might be better to teach a lesson on an individual level if kids are the main audience, I don't know. Yona is an exchange student. Not an immigrant. As an immigrant myself, I feel there's a difference between the 2 because Yona specifically came to Equestria to learn, not to live permanently, at least so far. So cultural assimilation is a slightly different conversation with Yona. I completely agree! Yona has always been shown to be smart, especially emotionally intelligent, making her compassionate and insightful. The Mane 5 did exactly what Yona asked them to do. They never forced her or purposefully put her or her culture down but did some stuff that inadvertently sent wrong messages and owned up to it. Just like how often in real life "Inclusion" does not translate well because it becomes a "thing" rather than a natural flowing cultural exchange.
  14. Yes this was something that bothered me about Season 8 and Season 9 in particular but is present in other seasons. Ponies are not racist by nature and every episode that covers racism in this show from "Bridle Gossip" to "Hearths Warming Eve" to later episodes feels wonky, unnatural and just off. Like they are trying to insert tendencies in our human world too forcibly into characters that weren't designed to function that way. Episodes like this do seem a bit like an attempt to stay "relevant" with other media being so concerned with diversity, inclusion and Micro aggression and it does not work except for the small moments where they acknowledge that most enemies on the show are non pony so the ponies might have grown more wary after the events of the movie etc. I still respectfully disagree on "Spice Up Your Life". Rarity started off wanting to succeed in fashion like you say but then wanted to conform to Canterlot tastes for the attention in high society she felt she deserved socially and gain a status, until the very end of "Sweet and Elite". She wanted Coriander to gain social status too. I don't think Rarity viewed a restaurant as a creative pursuit at that time. She was also friends with the restaurant reviewer and had probably been influenced by her. I DO agree on your comment about Bridle Gossip however. I did not like how the writing handled racism in that episode at all like I said to the other person.
  15. You are completely entitled to your opinion, so no offense, but, sorry, I just adore “It’s Gonna Work” because of the beat and its reference to India which my friends who were born in India tell me is actually pretty accurate. Plus as some others have noticed, Rarity is comfortable standing out when it comes to fashion and her own business but tends to want to fit in when other cultural things are involved, especially when what she views as high society comes into play. We see this tendency in “Sweet and Elite” and in some other episodes in smaller doses when she goes to Manehattan, like her desire to open “Rarity For You” on a particular day regardless of how overworked she is because she believes that is what is expected of her. She wanted to ensure Coriander’s success and didn’t want to take the same type of creative risk because its not her business to risk and Coriander had his whole living situation riding on the restaurant because he moved halfway across Equestria to open it. Rarity understands that a business must still please its customer, and probably remembers how angry the customer was when Rarity made changes to the princess dress that were not part of the original order. (What Sassy Saddles failed to grasp was Rarity definitely wanted to please customers but her shop is for items that cannot be massed produced) Pinkie Pie however is not a business pony and is does not care in the slightest what others think. But yes I totally agree this “She’s All Yak” episode showed great character growth in Rarity. The writing was brilliantly subtle. Rarity learned from her mistakes in “Spice Up Your Life” and “Suited For Success” here. Rarity still tries to please Yona, not herself, just as she had done with many other characters. Its part of her element.
  16. I just watched "Common Ground" again before the new episode aired and noticed that Wind Sprint and Quibble refer to Wind's father in a past tense so it would appear her father has died like Applejack's family and the VA's late wife. So sad but a glorious way for the VAs to honor a loved one who is no longer with them. I figured this was the case when I read the episode backstory but still this further confirms it for me.
  17. SPOILER ALERT! This episode was really cute. It was nice to see a dance other than the Grand Galloping Gala. I enjoyed the “My Fair Lady” reference. Even though the plot is predictable it was nice to see how well it was executed with the sweet Friendship between Yona and Sandbar and see Sandbar not be as clueless as he was in “Uprooted”. In case people here are confused, Yona and Sandbar got the friends award because they stuck by each other, not because Yona ruined the dance. I know some Bronies always wonder why we don’t see much of the non pony creatures teaching non pony culture to ponies so the ending with everybody stomping like Yona was probably very satisfying to them as well as for me. The song was sweet. I liked how the new tree house was used as Yona’s hiding place. I just wish we had seen more of the inside of the treehouse.
  18. Please pray for my friend who is in the path of a cyclone in India!

  19. SPOILER ALERT! This episode was adorable. It was nice to see the buck ball game again with Fluttershy and Pinkie and Snails. Snips trying to make money off autographs was cute and made perfect sense for his character. I really liked the friendship between Quibble and Rainbow Dash here. I loved the voice acting work on the filly and Quibble’s girlfriend. It is my understanding from another behind the scenes article that Quibble’s voice actor’s family did the voices on the 2 new characters so well done! The lesson and general plot of the entire episode is extremely relatable for a lot of child and adult fans I’m sure. Initially I thought this episode confirmed divorce exists in Equestria now just like in our world but hearing from some of the posts that Quibble’s VA is grieving makes a death of the father make sense too. I like that the writers addressed the idea of Quibble being a stepdad and the filly not wanting him to replace her father more directly instead of skirting around that type of more adult plot. Hopefully it will allow kids to empathize with their step parents a little. I also like how Quibble said he already tried to introduce the Filly to his book interests and failed. Only downsides were that it was completely predictable more or less and the fact that ponies are only now realizing what buck ball actually is more widely does not make much sense since the Apples did not invent buck ball as far as I remember. The Apples learned it from someone else, I thought.
  20. I showed my friends who were born in India this article today, and they thought Apu was not accurate but certainly not offensive as Apu is an exaggerated joke for a dark comedy cartoon. These same 2 Indian friends loved "Spice Up Your Life" and felt the characters should have had a cameo in "Point Of No Return" but that Apu had nothing to do with MLP. Thanks for posting the article.
  21. Yes it would have been great if Moon Dancer had more scenes! Exactly! As I said in my previous comment, the lack of Coriander and Marsala was more likely due to production demands or the voice actors being unavailable rather than PC plus it was established in "Spice Up Your Life" that the 2 of them stay in the Kitchen to cook more often. MLP staff could always re cast them if they want Indian voice actors for better representation of minorities, since MLP has done a ton of recasting over all these seasons, Sombra included. I was just wanting to see Marsala and Coriander again so badly!! I was impressed with Spike's knowledge of cultural foods as well. Spike should have a job there if/when he needs extra bits!
  22. Just found the episode online and took a screenshot You are absolutely right. Her aura is Season 1 color and she is shorter with a shorter horn! I only noticed she had no wings when I saw it on TV. Good eye! The animators really nailed this callback! So nice to see Unicorn Twilight again for a comparison of how far she has come and still fits into the lesson because Twilight is still flawed all these years later. I guess her horn aura got darker as she gained more magical ability.
  23. Oh I see. This sucks. My 2 friends who were born in India find characters from India to be hilarious on TV and not the slightest bit offensive so they are going to be quite disappointed when I show them this. I want characters from India and Hindu characters to be written respectfully and I would prefer characters from India to be played by Indian actors for authentic performance, but this is just PC police as my 2 friends with Indian accents would say. In MLP's case they probably just couldn't call the old VAs in who did the characters back in or something. Pity.
