I would highly recommend Black Lagoon, it's probably the best one I've seen.

Also, if no one has told you yet, Dragon Ball Z is an anime everyone needs to watch.

A personal favorite, Sonic X.

Wolf's Rain is a great one as well! It was my first! :D

Oh, and be sure to catch Sword Art Online, I haven't seen it, but I heard it was really good.

That and obviously Attack On Titan. ^^

TL;DR

Black Lagoon

Dragon Ball Z

Sonic X

Wolf's Rain

Sword Art Online

Attack On Titan

(edited)

I started an anime blog in order to help try to get me into anime by critiquing it. I've finished my first anime

it was 'Welcome to the NHK'. I plan on doing a full review on it soon but It would take me a while

to write it up (I have 1000 words written so far I have to write maybe 500 more and do some edits).

Most of the anime I try to watch I end up dropping as you can see from MyAnimeList http://myanimelist.net/animelist/ComicConReviews

I'm interested in slice of life, comedy drama's, and science fiction, oh and any anime that features video games is of interest to me. Hence why the Hyperdimension Neptunia anime is on my watch list. Feel free to make me some recommendations.  :please:

Let me see now. Here are a few of my favorites in no particular order.

Saint Tail

Sailor Moon

Cardcaptor Sakura

Lucky Star

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (Major Motoko Kusanagi is one of the coolest characters in anime!)

Martian Successor Nadesico

R.O.D. the TV

Excel Saga (Very funny series. You'll laugh your lungs out!)

I tried watching lucky star and had to drop it before episode 1 the 10 minute mark. Good god why do they have to talk so much about eating pastries! We get it there are many techniques, but I digress...

If you're into fantasy stuff, The Slayers is a great series to watch, as well as most of the OVAs.  This is a series that does really well in the subtitle version and the English dub.  (I've also seen the OVA's in Spanish dub; that was terrible).

My list will mostly have older stuff than most recommendations.

Ranma 1/2 (Subtitle is better)

Blue Seed (Dub is better)

Project A-ko (Fairly even)

Chrono Crusade (Dub is better)

Azumanga Daioh (Fairly even)

Tenchi Muyo (Fairly even)

El-Hazard: The Wanderers (Dub is better)

Master of Mosquiton (Sub is better)

Street Figher II: The Animated Movie (Fairly even)

I actually had a chance to meet Lisa Ortiz, the English voice of Lina Inverse. She was really nice. She even recited Lina's signature spell, The Dragon Slave!

(Glad it didn't really work. Think tactical nuclear warhead to envision the results of a Dragon Slave)

That was one of my favorite Dragon Slaves, mainly because of Amelia!

"Don't pray to the Dark Lord!"  "...aren't you a shrine maiden?"  I love it!

...oh, and it should probably be pointed out that Lisa Ortiz only did Lina in the seasons, not the OVAs; but what a great experience that must have been!

One Piece (It gets better at the CP9 Arc, and keeps getting better.

MADOKA MAGICA

MADOKA MAGICA

MADOKA  MAGICA

Watch it up until the end of episode 3, and by then you'll know what type of anime you're watching :3

Quite possibly my favorite anime ever. I'd make it god tier.

Also honestly I didn't like SAO. The opening is as catchy as hell, but I don't like romance. The first few episodes were cool though. Then it just... becomes another cliché romance anime.

Oh yeah, watch Attack on Titan too.

I'd recommend Dragon Ball Z, Hellsing: Ultimate, Digimon and Kirby of the Stars.

I have grown interested in Attack on Titan, Code Geass, Sword Art Online, Fullmetal Alchemist, Devil May Cry, Gurren Lagan and RWBY.

Well I've seen a lot of people recommend Attack on Titan, but I'd really be cautious about that one. It is awesome, there is no doubt about it, but...You said you were looking for memorable characters? You will NOT find them in Attack on Titan. The three main characters are meh at best, and if you get attached to anyone else, they're likely to die. And also, this anime will test your patience A LOT. When stuff is actually happening it's always awesome. But, there are far to many moments when I was screaming "SHUT UP! WE ALREADY KNOW THIS!". Just take that in mind before you get into that one.

And also...I feel that DBZ is kinda of...*hides behind a chair*...overrated. I mean, after knowing the story for the first time, it is painful to watch again. Actually, it's just painful to watch period because I read the manga. And all the jokes people make about the show, are not exaggerations.

I don't know if it helps, but my first anime will always be Doraemon

I think fate/zero and the whole fate serie are pretty interesting, I was a great fan of type/Moon

Anime like naruto , one piece , bleach will always be interesting if you have the time to finish them

Searching in google is a good way to find valuable anime , you can search "best anime 2014 or best anime August(something like this) " to find the newest anime

I'd recommend:

Black Lagoon (short but awesome, and very dark)

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood (great characters, great action, and some extremely well done emotional scenes that I can't explain because spoilers)

Darker than Black (s1 is great, s2... not so much)

Death Note (It's good, but I'd seriously recommend reading the manga over watching the anime. It's mostly small changes, but they add up quickly)

Attack on Titan (as was said earlier, the characters aren't great, but the action and setting are. I love all the political mystery and other stuff it gets into later)

Fairy Tail (haven't watched this, but the manga is great and I've heard good things about the anime)

Naruto (great action and fight scenes, goes through a lot of highs and lows story wise. Sometimes it's awesome, sometimes its just stupid)

Bleach (see Naruto description, except more to the extremes, i.e. the fights are even better but the rest is usually worse)

Cowboy Bebop (surprisingly well animated for how old it is. Just a great series all around)

Samurai Champloo (made by the guy who did Cowboy Bebop, up to the same quality)

Afro Samurai (story is good, but the fights are the main attraction. Only series I'd recommend watching dubs over subs, because of how much Samuel L. Jackson there is)

Ben-to (short and hilarious)

- Gurren Lagann is one of the best Mecha anime's I've ever seen and my personal favorite anime

- Cowboy Bebop is an anime that needs no introduction

- Trigun is really good too

- The original Dragon Ball is considered the best among fans, and is highly recommended

- DBZ is great, but if you watch it I highly recommend the DBZ Kai version, as it follows the manga more closely and removes almost all of the pointless filler(despite the fact that some filler made it more enjoyable admittedly)

- Sailor Moon is considered the quintessential Magical Girl anime, and right now it would be a good time to watch it with Crystal out and the original version getting a redub

- Outlaw Star is a lot of fun

- Cardcaptor Sakura(along with many other CLAMP anime) is also really good

- Fooly Cooly is short but sweet

- You should watch at least one Gundam anime. Personally I recommend G Gundam since it's basically DBZ with Gundams, even if that series itself is vastly different from typical Gundam anime

Watch FullMetal Alchemist (both 2003 & Brotherhood), Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni, Trigun and Cowboy Beebop. I strongly recommend them.

Watch Dragonball Z and Attack on Titan if you wish, just a word of caution. if you're looking for a strong story these are not for you but if you're looking for fun these might be what you're looking for. (I'm only recommend AoT as it seems to have DBZ-esque appeal. I personally thought Attack on Titan sucked.)

Also NEVER watch Bleach or Naruto, these two have to be amongst the crappiest series I've ever watched. Naruto especially, I don't know what I saw in them back in my teenage years, they were just awful.

dragon ball z! Best anime i have ever seen! :3 but watch it in English it's one of those anime where English dub is better than the original

this is true on most counts of DBZ the voices themselves are better but the Dialog at times can be really corny. Granted it did run (if you count Dragon Ball, I do) from the mid 90's to the early 2000's so looking back everything was kinda corny. Still excellent tho. Just ignore Dragon Ball GT's existences

Bleach yeah most of its arcs were pretty bad, as for Naruto watching it in English is a no no. The Japanese one isnt to bad, but if you want a really long running anime that will kill a month of time to simply catch up watch One Piece been number 1 for 15 years now and still going strong its like the world of Warcraft of Animes

Eden of the East: strong characters, but fairly confusing and convoluted storyline for the first few episodes (you get the hang of it)

Neon Genesis: Evangelion: lots of explosions and dark characterization

Btooom!: death game anime about bombs whoooo what is there not to like

Tsuritama: not as heavy as the others; comedy/SoL/completely random, but really beautifully animated and voiced acted

Tomorrow's Joe: TAKE TISSUES. It's a sports anime, but trust me...it's really, really, REALLY REALLY worth it

Fairy Tail: not the best anime in the world, I confess, but it's got some great and hilarious characters, touching moments, SICK magic, and interesting, fresh storylines, humour, and everything else that makes it pretty classic

Pani Poni Dash: hilariously "wat"

Baka and Test: another rom-com that will make you laugh pretty hard

Blood+: dark and gory, but interesting enough concept. It's not the best anime out there by a long shot, but I was entertained, and I liked the character design

Blue Exorcist: gonna admit that it's one of the few "overhyped" animes that I genuinely LOVED. It's unique for sure, and it has an overbearing father/uncle figure, so that is good in my books

Edit: Steer clear of:

-Attack on Titan

-Sword Art Online

-Dragon Ball

-Full Metal Alchemist

-Bleach

-Soul Eater (oh got the animation hurts me ;~; )

-FUTURE DIARY (IT IS GOD-AWFUL AAAH)

I personally find all those series very generic or dull despite the hype they get. However, Trigun and Cowboy Bebop are worthy of the praise they're getting here, so I would watch them. Of course, everyone has different tastes, but remember that popular doesn't necessarily equate to good.

- Sailor Moon is considered the quintessential Magical Girl anime, and right now it would be a good time to watch it with Crystal out and the original version getting a redub

^ Yes, this!!

The Japanese episodes of the original anime are on Hulu (the free Hulu, not a HuluPlus exclusive). They have up to episode 24 on there now and episodes 25 and 26 will be up tomorrow (there are 200 total). They release 2 episodes every Monday.

Sailor Moon Crystal is available on Hulu as well - right now they just released episode 3.

The difference? The first anime is loosely based on the manga and they kinda did a lot of their own thing with the plot and filler and whatnot. It's still great in its own right, but the manga is better. Sailor Moon Crystal is pretty much an animated version of the manga with the best of the anime put in there. It has a really nice modern feel to it - you can tell that the original Sailor Moon anime is from the 90's, it is so dated, lol.

If you want to watch Dragonball Z, first I recommend watching Dragonball. If you don't have the patience to watch all 300 episodes of Dragonball Z (many of which consist of screaming and powering up), I recommend watching Dragonball Z Kai instead. I watched one episode (in English, even) and I found myself enjoying it very much - it was a mixture of nostalgia and "Hey this show is actually going somewhere and it's entertaining!"

I also recommend Soul Eater. Now, the anime gets a pretty crappy ending IMO, at least compared the manga (which I haven't finished yet but I am past the part where the anime and the manga split directions and so far what they're doing in the manga makes way more sense), but the anime is still worth watching. The characters and their relationships are complex, there is good humor, the plot and the setting are VERY interesting, and the music is so eclectic and bizarre you have to download the soundtrack.

Code Geass is really good because it takes the "mech anime" stereotype and throws it out the window and makes a good anime with good plot and good characters, you can barely tell that it's a mech anime. Some of the things that happen in the show still make me angry - that's how good it is.

Everyone else's lists are pretty good. Rewatching Death Note right now and I forgot how good it is.

And yes, keep in mind the legal means of obtaining anime:

-Netflix (if you don't have an account, get one. It's 8 bucks a month and there's TONS of anime that you can watch in either English or Japanese if you want)

-Hulu (free) or HuluPlus (monthly fee)

-CrunchyRoll (free with ads, monthly fee without ads)

If you love a series enough, buy the DVDs, if you can afford it. Then you will have them forever and not have to worry about any websites taking the episodes down.
