Who hates the word "overrated"?

I'm not a big fan of it because it often feels like a way to bash on something and the people who like it without explaining why. If you think something's bad, why not just say why you think so? Does it really matter if a lot of people enjoy something and you don't? I'd much rather people explained themselves without passively claiming that they have better taste than others.

Which isn't to say that there aren't plenty of popular things that don't appeal to me. I dislike the attitude that sometimes seems to be behind the word more than the word itself.

1. expresses a relatively low opinion regarding the quality of something and 2. serves to diminish the opinions of others regarding that something.  Actually, it does a third thing as well: 3. contains the presumption that the user somehow for certain knows how the majority view something.

Suggesting that something is overrated does not necessarily mean its bad, it only means that it did not live up to its popular conception, which may have simply set the bar far too high.  For example, I might consider Final Fantasy 7 overrated, even though it is an excellent video game, because its popularity is so absurd it can never live up to its own hype (although I am not certain if it is still anywhere near as popular as it once was).  Similarly, it is possible for absolute garbage to not be overrated because everyone recognizes it as garbage.  I good example would be Star Trek 5: The Final Frontier.  It is an absolutely abominable movie, but because everyone knows and acknowledges that, it is not overrated.

If you regard something as being good, why even call it overrated?  Why say, "Yes it's excellent and I quite like it, but it is more well-liked and / or exalted than is proportionate to how much I like it."  And no example is a reliably good example, because there's someone who likes everything.  One man's trash, so to speak.

Though really it wasn't even your interpretation of the word I took issue with.  And obviously you don't have to defend your use of the word because I've no real influence over what anyone says. xD  It's a far cry from a racial slur or anything inherently and undeniably hateful.  But "overrated" has been used to excess, and I don't think that most people have given its use near as much consideration as you have.

^ Intended as friendly, but I'm multitasking so may not sound it lol.

I only hate it with people misuse the word.

People who make top overrated  videogames list on youtube don't seem to know what the word. There some youtobers who do know the mean.

Overrated:  have a higher opinion of (someone or something) than is deserved.

A youtuber by the name joshscorcher did to ten overrated game list, he put Resident Evil 5, the game that wasn't praise by RE fans since they complain about it being a action game despite it good reviews.

Because I enjoy being a cynical, critical bastard and pointing out the flaws in things.  Or more seriously, because I felt that what I am criticizing could be so much better than what it is, such as Starcraft 2, and this is a good way to segway into that point.  Or if I find a popular work which is clearly inferior to a less popular work.  It is just a useful term to have around.

It's an easily misunderstood term, though.  And rather than call the popular work "overrated," why not expose people to the less popular - but superior - work.  You could even call the latter "underrated."  This probably sounds like "half glass full" sort of talk, and I don't know where it's coming from lol.  I actually am the cynic you facetiously claimed to be.  I might be ill. xD

The word overrated is well, overrated. It's used an awful lot, and in some cases rightfully so. A lot of times though, it's just used since it's a popular word nowadays.

Anyways, my least favorite word used a lot is hate. Hate is such a strong word. It'd make more sense if somebody disliked something, rather than hate it. Unless they really do dislike something that much. It's just that I see people say that they hate a certain pony, or something like that an awful lot. I personally could never hate any ponies from FIM. Hate is such an overrated word.  :comeatus:

Your not very good at being a cynical, critical bastard, are you?  As you pointed out, underrated and overrated are two sides of the same coin, at least as soon as you introduce and second work, and either is an equally valid description of the contrast that is being established, it just depends on how vitriolic you wish to be at the time.  But there is nothing inherently wrong with either approach.

Also, your proposal of using underrated is the closest anyone has gotten to suggesting a replacement to overrated in this thread.  You should get an award or something.

I don't mind the usage of the word, I just think it is highly overused, and some people seem to use it as a cover for whatever ignorant horsesh*t they're saying. :fiery:

If the person using it has a civil tone and explains their points properly, then I don't mind it so much even if I disagree. :)

You're all right. I don't actually hate the word "overrated" but I hate how abused the word is. I actually have used the word before but the only thing I ever called overrated was Angry Birds. Not because it's popular but because I have so many issues with it and I can't even tolerate it at all. I don't really do that anymore though. So yeah "overrated" shouldn't be abused.

I always thought that when something was considered overrated it meant having less potential than what the majority of people thought it would have.

For example (not based on a real opinion, but it's late, I need to sleep and I don't have much time left), iPhones are overrated. People think they're the best thing in the world, while they are just phones that have pretty GUIs.

That's what I consider the thought process of overrating something. The exact opposite goes for underrated. (But for now, I'm gonna hit the hay)

I dislike overrated just because of it's core meaning. If it has that high rating, then it probably deserves it in the first place! Overrated is just used by people who don't like things that a lot of people like, because it sounds more definitive.

"I don't like this, but many do. Therefor i i think its overrated. My opinion is so legit"

And btw, I hated the "Dark Knight Movie". That movie was horrible and i don't care how many good reviews it got. It bored me to death. "Oh no, this movie is so dark. A clown? I can't think what will happen if the Circus came, that would like really greased up the city with clown graffiti and jugglers or something?. Batman Begins atleast had ninjas which made it cooler. Take that "Overrated users" (aka nerds) :P

But even if i don't like something or like, then i'm not gonna self praise myself with this "OR" word. I just say i like something or not, mostly honest without trying to include its own ego as a legit response.

I don't see what's so bad about it. It just means you don't like something as much as others do. As long as people use it correctly I have no problem with people using it. I also don't mind the usage if they have reasons to back-up why they think something is overrated.

Besides, there's nothing wrong with feeling negative.

Normally I'd be all "You're right breh!"

But unfortunately being negative can be very irritating and can push many friends away

(I figured this out the hard way)

There are times you should be negative and times you shouldn't just be careful

Off course, it is possible to have too much negativity. But some negativity won't harm anyone.

The problem isn't in the word itself, but in people, who are using it all the time, often not understanding its meaning

But no, I don't hate it and sometimes it's very fitting word to describe something.

Popularity is no guarantee of merit or quality.  Case in point, reality television.  Oh, it is popular all right, but it is still mindless, superficial drivel.
