what do you think about mlp:fim in different languages

im just starting this topic to see what some of you bronies out there think of mlp:fim in different languages 

 

the swedish is not that good I mean I like it but it could have been better

Well, Polish dubbed episodes are quite well done. They are not as good as the original, and it could be hard to translate some language-specific jokes, but still I would say that the Polish voice actors and their directors are doing a good job. Better than with other TV series I know.

 

 

Most voices are similar to the orignal or at least fitting. Especially Rainbow Dash (Agnieszka Mrozińska) and Discord (Grzegorz Pawlak)

 

 

They're doing very good job with the songs, too. This is usually lacking in other dubbed animations, because it is hard to find voice actors/actresses who can also sing well. But Polish actresses have experience from musical theater performance, so they can sing pretty well

 

 

The only thing I could complain is that they sometimes sound a bit childish. But this has changed with time, after the voice actresses figured out that there's also an older audience

"Then if you know what can be improved, and you can improve it, do it."

And it's also what I try to do in such situations myself: If only I can improve something, I do.

Polish sounds a bit better 

 

sweden dont have that many of the language-specific jokes they just say what the original does but in swedish :okiedokielokie: 

 

but the singing in swedish is kinda good I guess, but if you don't know swedish it might sound bad (tho some of the singing is horrible, and dont get me started on the grammar on winter wrap up)

Well, it's not that bad (better than the French one).

Good voices for Twilight and Pinkie Pie, weird voice for Rainbow Dash – she sounds like a boy, but I'm not quite sure, because it seems to change from episode to episode. But it's a common mistake of voice actors dubbing her: they think she's a boy (I must admit that I thought that too when I first saw her, until they started addressing her as "she"). Agnieszka Mrozińska who dubbed RD in Polish version also thought that at first, and she even did that mistake on one of the meetings with fans

Rarity's singing voice in Swedish is terrible ;J

And I don't know why they sometimes change the pitch, as with Pinkie's song from "Ticket Master". (Perhaps the voice actress had some troubles with singing in the original key?)

 

But my overall impression is good As good as the Polish version, I'd say, and better than French.

yeah Raritys singing voice in swedish does suck, and yeah I also think the pinkie voice actress had some troubles with singing in the original key :v

Edit: This Dutch clip actually sounds very good, their voices are very similar to the original and they fit, with the notable exception of Rainbow Dash which sounds... WTF? But I'm speaking just about voices, not the language. If you don't like the Dutch "ghr" sound, then better don't watch Hebrew version ;D

If I were in charge, I would get rid of dubbing. People that don't know English for whatever reason can watch the original and like it. Dubbing does not add to the experience and the translation is no better than what subtitles have to offer. I wouldn't even allow commercials in other languages.

I disagree. Every opportunity to make the show accessible to fans of all ages in all countries is a good thing, not a bad thing.

I thought it was an atrocity. I've do not recall ever seeing a Japanese anime intro be dubbed before and I think intros in general should never be dubbed even if the rest of the program is.

Well, subtitles should be able to take care of that. And if the dubbing is going to add something new to the dialogue then they might as well remake the entire thing. The original language is how it was meant to be enjoyed.

I enjoy the Japanese version especially the intro to season 3 (I think that was the one). I just love the homeland's way of adding their special touch to everything in that signature Japan style. I'll have to post an example below. I also love the voices in that version XD it's just so fun to listen to, makes me imitate it a lot much to my sister's enjoyment.

Show dialog moves at a fast pace in many spots. Plus the lower end of the target audience would have a harder time following. I'm talking about 5 year olds who would have a hard time reading Pinkie Pie, Rarity, and Twilight when they start with the fast dialog. This is why some kids shows are dubbed to begin with. It would be cheaper to NOT hire new V/A's and script it. They don't do subtitles because it's not a good idea. It creates a sense of relation dissonance in younger kids.

Well one know this already exsists you can watch it in english and with subtitles, and for those you can't read that fast like children or people who don't understand english can watch the dubs.  

 

Lets not forget what the targeted audience is

I don't want to get into the dubbed vs subbed argument here on this forum of all places. I will say that I wouldn't recommend watching something subbed if you have a migraine though. I learned that in my ethnography of politics class. Take some Advil first. I am watching FiM in its original language, which is just fine, because I speak English. I do, however, have some curiousity of other languages. Once upon a time, I took four semesters of Japanese. I don't really speak the language now, over four years later, but I did start by checking out Japanese dubs of some of the FiM songs, as well as the Japanese intros.

 

I then branched out into checking out other language dubs of various songs, partially because, much to my disappointment, the Japanese dub apparently ends after season 2. I actually find the Japanese dub of the Smile Song better than the French dub, probably because Japanese girls speak(and sing) in higher pitches, whereas French girls might speak(and sing) in a lower voice, while Pinkie suits a higher voice.

 

I have made a bit of an observation for languages other than English regarding the various characters and their respective voices. Twilight suits Western European languages fairly well, and even some Eastern European languages. She seems to be the most versatile of the cast in that regard. Rarity suits the Romance languages quite well, probably because she's quite elegant. Applejack and Rainbowdash seem to suit Eastern European and other such languages where the voice actresses speak in a lower voice, though that could just be because of their tomboyish nature. Pinkie suits languages like Japanese, where she's voiced in a higher pitch, and Fluttershy also suits languages like that, where her voice is higher pitched and dainty. Again, these are just my observations. Feel free to disagree. I have also been primarily listening to songs, almost exclusively when it comes to other languages, and I only do that once in a while.

Well, I watched all episodes in two versions: Polish-dubbed and with original English dubbing, and I like the original more. But that's because I know English well enough (even if it's not my native language) to understand the dialogues and jokes. I also translated and subtitled several episodes (including songs and rhyming Zecora), to make them available for those who don't know English, but can read fast.

 

But before you start forcing other people to perceive their world your way and getting rid of dubbing, please try to put yourself into other peoples' shoes sometimes, because not everyone can understand English as good as you, or read as fast as you. There's a huge part of the MLP:FiM audience (actually the target one) which doesn't know English yet and cannot read fast enough, and dubbing in their native language is the only way they can enjoy the show at all. Do you really want to take this fun from them just because you don't like the dubbing? I'd say, better a bird in a hoof than a rooster on a roof (or whatever it goes).

 

I really don't understand why do you need to get rid of dubbing, since it doesn't influence your world at all. You can watch episodes in original English if you like, no one forces you to watch dubbed ones, so why do you want to force others to watch without dubbing?

Well, sometimes it adds. Polish voice actors often add some jokes or references to Polish pop-culture which wasn't there in the original, and it makes more fun to the audience than jokes which are funny only in Enghish which they don't understand, and not so funny in Polish, because they're untranslatable.

 

Also, thre's one more benefit from the episodes being subbed in other languages, at least for me: I can learn foreign languages with ponies! If I know the original, I can play it with the dubbed one side by side and understand what the characters say in the unknown language, which now is not unknown anymore ;J and I can learn the original pronunciation from native speakers who dubbed it. I used this technique already for learning French, and I'm always happy to see when someone posts videos of the episodes in foreign languages, such as in this thread.

 

Oh, maybe this might be actually a good place to post such links to whole dubbed episodes? (if it doesn't break any rules of this forum, of course) It would be then a great place with resources for anyone who likes to learn languages this way What do you think?
