Hello everypony!

 

Ever since joining this fandom I have been a fan of the shipping fictions written about these lovely ponies. I have since found a craving for more than usual and thought that I might seek assistence from my fellow bronies. This thread is meant for recommending good shipping fictions to eachother to help sorting out the bad works than is bound to happen in a fandom as huge as ours.

 

With that said, this thread is ONLY for SHIPPING stories, meaning ROMANCE between the ponies, because these are the ones hard to find when searching for quality reads.

 

What I'm looking for is people with taste, be it unique or a common taste in romance.

I would like everypony to think of this thread when they uncover works that they consider worth reading. If they stumble upon a new story that they found interesting. You should also post your existing favorites, telling us which stories you have enjoyed the most.

 

Please try to restrain from posting self written works unless you actually find it to be a good read, this is not a thread meant for you to be noticed, but for fellow romance lovers to share good stories.

I will start with some of my own favorites. These are three of my top fives and all contain a little different themes just to have some variation from the start.

 

 

Name: Two's Company, Three's a crowd.

 

Ship: Vinyl Scratch x Octavia (main ship), Lyra x Bon Bon, Twilight x Trixie

 

Tags: Romance, Comedy, Slice of Life.

 

Global rating: 1597 tumbs up, 48 thumbs down.

 

Personal rating: I'll give it a solid 5/5. It's my favorite story so far and have made my cry several times for reasons you will have to discover yourself.

 

Content: The story is about Vinyl's and Octavia's relationship. They have their ups and downs, but they stand together to fight through it. It comes as a shock for them when they get news of an unexpected visitor in their life and will therefor have to adapt to this new aspect.

 

Why I like this fiction: It's well written, follows a nice and steady pace. The characters personalities are well unfolded and the interaction between them are nicely done as well. The whole concept of the story is cute and very catchy, I found it hard to stop reading when I had first started. It's long, but the chapters are fairly short. It evolves around a single story line that's filled with usable content and unexpected turn of events.

 

Rated: "Everyone" on Fimfiction, but I would personaly say "Teen" for suggestive context and semi-dirty jokes.

Personal rating: I would put it somewhere around 4,8/5.

 

Content: The story is about Twilight harnessing secret feelings for the showmare Trixie, worried about what have happened to her after she ran away form ponyville after the Ursa Minor incident, Twilight sets out to find the azure blue unicorn to find out how she really feels about her.

 

Why I like this fiction: I personally never liked Trixie until I read this fiction, it gives a nice background story for the change to a sweeter and more caring Trixie. I really like how the story was pulled off, the author seem to have found it easy to bind all actions together and make the story flow smoothly. The character interaction is also nice while the whole relationship is pulled off very well.

Why I like this fiction: I personally have a huge love for 2nd person fictions, being able to live oneself into a character is something I've always valued highly. This fiction does that very well by not revealing more about you than necessary to complete a long and intriguing read. The author have created a nice scenery for this whole event and have managed to catch Rainbow's more feminine and loving sides. It's well written overall and the story line flows smoothly until the very end.

Global rating: Star Five on EQD (Exact number of ratings unknown due to the website refusing to show me.)

 

Personal rating: 3.7/5 It has a number of flaws, but it's still quality comedy and worth a read.

 

Content: Twilight and Fluttershy are both in love with each other, but are so shy and caught up in their own anxiety they can't see it, so they end up setting up a date while helped out by their friends. Hilarity ensues.

 

Why I like this fiction: Although I personally think that fics that start with two ponies already being love is a little bit silly--real world relationships don't usually begin that way, and the few that do tend to end in tears--it's still rather funny. It's also one of the first fics I read in the fandom, and influenced some of my perception of how Fluttershy might act in a romantic situation.

 

Rated: I would rate it Teen due to some risque humor in the later chapters.

Global rating: Technically 4.9 stars out of 1229 ratings, officially 6-Star on EQD.

 

Personal rating: 4.8/5. It's a phenomenal story, but it does still have a few flaws, and leaves me with a number of questions. I also wonder if certain things might've been better switched around or given more detail than we see. I can't be more specific without spoiling it.

 

Content: A series of letters, primarily between Twilight and Applejack, but everypony else gets in on the letters as well.

 

Why I like this fiction: My description hardly does this story justice. It's told over a number of years, entirely through letters, and it is chock full of comedy and tragedy, bittersweet to the end. It's a wonderful story that everyone ought to read, I think.

Quality shipfics you say? Well, as luck would have it, obscure shipping fanfics tend to be the only MLP related writing I read these days. While I could rally of a handfull of decent fics I've happened upon while sifting through Fim-Fiction and the like, one of the more engaging pieces I've come across would have to be the following:

Content: Luna has returned to Equestria, but she is as cold and distant as the moon that held her captive. Celestia broods on her throne, regretting mistakes made and prices paid. Twilight Sparkle contemplates betrayal, and as her faith drains away, bitterness takes its place. And in the darkness, a relic of an ancient tragedy watches, his life consumed by greivances that he can neither remember nor forget. Betrayed and betrayers all, four ponies in need of a redemption that only one seeks. Will Honesty be enough to save them? Can one hoof, extended in trust and forgiveness, mend four wounded hearts?

 

Why I like this fiction: I stumbled upon this shipfic quite early on in 2011 (around the time when 'A Dog and Pony Show' first aired). Consequently, a cannon persona for Luna didn't exist, and fannon dispositions were being thrown around left right and centre in an attempt to come up with a 'best' temperament of sorts. Aside from the eloquent style of writing, and interesting pairing itself, what really caught my attention with this fic was the actual depth of character and degree of intricacy woven in and around each characters nature, making the story an enjoyable read in comparison to many of the second-rate fictions being faddishly slapped together for the sake of throwing another Luna personality into the mix.

One day, she decides to give you a present to ease up the tension for a certain message she wants to give you, but fate doesn't want it to be easy for her as you are thrown into a fight to protect Dtizy's honor and before you know it you end up with a black eye and a meeting in your boss' office.

 

Why I like this fiction: It's the first proper Ditzy Doo fiction I've read. It contains her chraracter quite well and giver her a nice adorkable (how I love that word) pressence. It's another fiction from the same author as the two above and it's therefor still well written and interestingly formulated.

 

Rated: Mature, will contain horn and wing play. Nothing beyond that.

After hearing a scream from inside the cave you decide to dig your way in, but you never thought that what you met in there would have such a big impact on your life.

 

Why I like this fiction: Again, another 2nd person fiction from the awesome author, Crowley. His writing style is very good and his imagination vast. I enjoy the way he writes out the story as well as the affection between the characters.

In her pursuit to reclaim her most treasured possessions however, Trixie will learn more about those she once cast aside, as well as things about herself she had longsince forgotten.

 

Why I like this fiction: I'm not a huge fan of TwilightxTrixe, but even I can admit how much this fic gives credibility to the pairing. Plus, it casts Trixie in a more sympathetic and kindhearted light than in the show, making her seem less like a total jerk.

Content: After the invention of radio, DJ-P0n3 (aka Vinyl Scratch) holds the first Equestrian talk show with her co-host Octavia. Octavia quickly finds out her superior is slightly eccentric, leading their broadcast to be constantly derailed, yet somehow remain popular. These episodes were recorded for historical significance and transcribed. These are the Vinyl Scratch Tapes.

 

Why I like this fiction: Done in the style of radio transcripts, this is the fic what cemented Vinyl x Octavia as my favorite pairing. If I'm not laughing at the reactions between these total opposites, I'm awwing over the subtle (and not so subtle) interations between these two musicians that truly show how much the care for one another. Also has a live reading currently in the works that is now to blame for my headcanon voices of Octavia and Vinyl.

Personal rating: A clear 5/5.

 

Content: Octavia finds herself in need of a drink after a certain concert on her beloved Cello. Her usual bar being closed she decides to seek relief in one of the lower class clubs of Canterlot. Here she stumbles upon a certain DJ pony and she have got no idea how big an impact this mare will have on her life.

 

Why I like this fiction: It's well written and the story is well developed. There's no rushing in the relationship and it feels natural for them to be together in this story. This is on my 1st place, shared with Two's Company. Three's a crowd. The ship in itself is a little awkward because of the difference in personality, but it works very well in this story however.

Content: Lyra and BonBon have finally decided that they need to take their relationship to the next level, however they could never know of the troubles this would create. Deciding to get married have raised anger from the "Canterlot Elite". Causing them to do whatever they can to avoid the marriage of these two mares.

 

Why I like this fiction: Well, first of all it's a favorite ship of mine. The story is full of good comedy and have made me laugh several times during these strange events of marriage. It's written neatly and the author catches a lot of good emotion that can either make me tear up or burst out laughing.

First one is a fic written by 3 separate authors, but still manages to be a very good read.

 

Name: Dawn of a New Day, Dawn of Flight, Dawn of Change

 

Ship: Twilight x Rainbow Dash

Content: Rainbow Dash get's heavily damaged in a thunderstorm and has to part with something she adores. Broken down, Twilight offers her aid to restore what was lost so that Rainbow can be happy again.

 

Why I like this fiction: The fic progresses along a good and calm line, adding bit's of romance and comedy as it goes. The fic then takes a more serious route when it goes over from Furor1's chapters onto the 2 other chapters written by Zaehlas and tn-scotsman. Things that should not be comes into this world, Ancient laws are broken and troubled times arrive.

Why I like this fiction: The fic starts a bit rushed, but quickly goes into a comfortable pace. It gives you moments of sadness, humor and romance in fair and good doses along the way, leaving you craving for more.

Why I like this fiction: The author really cought me on good at the beginning here. The story's pace was good, controlled, but not predictable. Canon stuff was used to a good extent, fanon stuff brought in was belivable and possible in a practical way.

The story gripped onto my heart and held it tightly through-out the Story.

I have two more fictions for the collection. One is a 2nd person fiction staring "you" and Rarity that I found interesting to read, far from the best story ever, but definitely worth the read anyway. The other is a rather old piece, before season two, staring Luna and Twilight, remember that this was before Luna got her canon personality and you will therefor have to think away from the Luna Eclipsed episode.

To compete in a magic turnament of skill, Twilight must study heart to achieve a proper performance, but this studying is interrupted as she meets a new friend in a pony she would never expect to share emotions with.

 

Why I like this fiction: This fiction have made me cry all day, I was so caught up in it that I managed to read the whole story in a day. It's well formulated, though if you read closely you will notice a few mistakes in the actuak writing, but this happens so little that I barely noticed it at all. It's a story of strong emotions and the author have had a good imagination while creating these interesting events we see on Twilight's trip to the competition.

Why I like this fiction: Well, it was an interesting read to say the least, cought some very nice elements of the 2nd person style of writing, yet the personality of Rarity didn't catch me much. The way "you" act in the story is somewhat elegant, yet with a tint of roughness which makes the OC character very interesting to follow.

Why I like this fiction: I really like this fiction because the author really make you wan't to read more, and builds up a atmosphere which makes the whole story really good, not only that, it's also well written.

Why I like this fiction: Well, quite frankly there isn't a large amount of this fiction out yet. However, it is building up very nicely. There is no rushing with emotions as some of the shipping fics seem to contain and, y'know, its freakin Vinyl Scratch so it already has a special place in my heart.

Why I like this fiction: It's an odd ship, yet it's pulled off quite nicely. The author have catched the personalities spot on. Trixie is wirtten almost perfectly and Fluttershy as well. I like the concept, and I enjoy the fact that it takes some time before the actual romance starts. The author have proven to very good at direct story telling and have a brilliant imagination.

If you think it's good enough and deserves to be read by the fandom, then yes. Though, please don't post anything with errors and mistakes everywhere. If you approve of the story and think that it's well written, grammatical correct and the story worth an actual read, then feel free to post it here.

 

Also, for everyone. I have edited my earlier post of Kindness's Reward. I cried so much during the last two chapters, chapters that I had not read when I posted the actual recommendation. It clearly deserves a 4,5/5 now and a place amongst my favorites. Though it will not reach a 5/5 because of several mistakes along the text and a few absent minded twists and misunderstandings.

Content: "Look out for number one." That was the way of life back in Clopton. A city where survival was a daily battle. Having made a few too many enemies, you move to Ponyville with only a bag of bits, the tools of your trade, and a couple jackets to cover the scars you've accumulated in the past. You don't trust anypony as far as you can throw them, but can you mesh well enough into the little country town to support yourself? It'd probably be easier without that colorful maned pegasus bothering you

 

Why I like this fiction: Hard to explain why exactly I like this ship. For starters it does not rush into the romance, it is more fluid and smooth. Another reasoning is the OC is a complete badass (and jerk) but you grow to love him as the story goes on. Of course, Rainbow Dash is in it so immediate amazing. Finally, this fanfic, though not the best, played on my emotions more then the usual fanfics. By the final chapter I was ready to cry. Of course, I'm all man so I didn't cry but it is the closest I have ever gotten to crying at a shipfic.

Why I like this fiction: All throughout this I was mentally telling myself not to cry, not to cry. By the end, I shall admit, my eyes had gotten fairly misty. It was a beautifully crafted shipfic, a few mistakes but then again no one is perfect. This shipfic...honestly, it truly got to me. I know I said that this ship above me got to me but this, it was just beautiful and I loved every single second of it.
