Your opinion on Alternative Rock?

So for the longest time, I listened to pop "Top 40" radio. However there were certain songs that I liked that felt different than the others... I more recently discovered the Radio Station X107.1, which is a "New Music Alternative" station in Georgia. I listen to it all the time now!

Still, for the longest time I didn't really even know what it was. What about you? Do you like it?

I finally have an answer for that terrible "What kind of music do you listen to?" question!!!

I enjoy listening to alternative rock a lot. It's a good alternative to classic rock, which I also enjoy. Though I enjoy listening to most rock music in general with some exceptions. Since you've mentioned the alternative rock radio station you listen to, I'll go ahead and name the one I listen to, which is KITS (LIVE 105)

All my life needed was a sense of someplace to go. I don't believe that one should devote his life to morbid self-attention. I believe that someone should become a person like other people.

What does "Alternative Rock" even mean? It's always seemed to me to be one of those genres that is so incredibly vague that I've never seen it even have any kind of meaning.

Yes I love Alternative Rock, it's my favorite genre too <3

The term itself is pretty vague, but you could probably say that for a lot of genres. To me at least, more traditional rock bands/songs just all sound kind of similar, which I think is the main difference in Alternative Rock.

It's really hard to define, even a Google definition is vague

  1. "Alternative rock (also called alternative musicalt-rock or simply alternative) is a genre of rock music that emerged from the independent music underground of the 1980s and became widely popular by the 1990s."
  2. I think it's just something you have to experience to understand; I can't think of a clear way to define it....
  3. It's more of a feeling, I think.

It's a pretty decent genre to listen to when you're in the mood for it.

Though, only problem is that so many things are labelled as alt. Rock. But hey, the genre system is flawed. iTunes claims that some of my classical music is electronic, so... Yep.

Lol. I remember way back in the day I imported a Classical CD of Mozart's Wind Concerti to iTunes and the genre it gave the CD was "electronica"! I'm like "Wha-?" What even is "electronica"? lol

Yeah, no genre label is perfect, but I've always found "alternative rock" to be exceptionally vague. I still don't even have the slightest of a clue as to what it even means.

I heard some alternative rock bands (at least I think they were alternative rock, I am really bad at naming genres). Music is fun and simple, but not something I would listen to daily, because it does not suprise listener at all. There's no place for more tricky riffs, vocals are mostly simply catchy with no "fireworks" and I aim for more atmospheric music. Overall from what I saw most songs have same structure: intro, verse, chorus, verse, chorus two times, some kind of interlude/bridge/whatever it is called or a guitar solo, chorus two times and (optional) outro.

Note: "songs I heard" is a key word so if there are different alternative rock bands I simply haven't heard of them yet :derp:

Going by this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_alternative_rock_artists x )

I got into bands like Alice in Chains, Collective Soul, Pearl Jam, and Stone Temple Pilots back in...  Middle school?  Why am I asking you lol? xD  I used to listen to that sorta schtuff a lot more back then.  I'm making myself feel old right now.  I still prefer classic rock to alternative, though.
