Source article: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3071634/Japanese-zoo-apologises-naming-new-monkey-Charlotte-new-royal-princess.html

So a zoo puts up a poll asking the public what they what their new baby monkey's name to be. The public votes, but the name "Charlotte" starts getting votes after the royal baby was born, and apparently, won by a landslide, so that's what the zoo decided to call it. And the Royal couple, or whoever starts complaining after the monkey is named, because apparently, it's 'disrespectful' to name your monkey after a wonderful, holier-than thou, made from gold brick and precious sapphire, hot out the womb royal poop and barf machine.

Frankly, I think this is stupid. It's a bloody name, for Luna's sake. The zoo has a right to name it's animals whatever they want, and if the royal family wants their names off limits, hell, they might as well copyright them. But then again, how many people (or animals) have the name "Charlotte" in the world? Or even other names of the holier-than though British royal's names? How many people on earth share theirs? Huh? Are the royals going to prevent use of their names, too?

God, this is all so bloody idiotic. Zoo shouldn't be made to apologize. Royals should get their regal scepters out their tightly clenched bums, and everyone should just calm the heck down over a name.

But what  are everyone else s' thoughts on this?

I'll change one of my OC's names to Charlotte. It's not like they'll come after me, right?

Yeah, that's dumb. It's just a name after all. There has to be a monkey out there that has the same name that was born before the royal baby, but doesn't have to apologize because the circumstance is different.

It's a name. Not only a name, but a first name. There are many Charlottes in the world, one of which is an incredible spider that made friends with a pig and saved him from being slaughtered.

What makes me more annoyed is that the royal family isn't commenting! The complaints are from the peanut gallery, people looking to be offended over something that doesn't effect them. To the zoo, don't apologize, giving the name of the royal child to a monkey is not offensive. I don't see the Catholic church ramming my door down for calling my parrot "Norbert."

Wow, no offense to the royal couple, but that's kind of pretentious and ignorant. It's not like they own the fucking name, anyway, there's no way Charlottle is a name they came up with and no one else in the world is named Charlotte.

I think it is a little much to immediately start jumping on the royal family about this issue. No where in the article did it state that the royal family complained, nor other articles. They're celebrities, they have fans. I understand that if a monkey, no matter how cute, was named after a child of mine, I could see how I could be offended... Though again, nowhere did it say they were actually offended... Just that they could be. :)

I think it's unfair to blame the royal family for the opinions of some vocal people trying to be respectful of a mother and her child!

The royal family doesn't own any name but their title, and even that depends on which country you're in. I'm sure the royal family of Dubai doesn't keep the name "Mohammed" to themselves. You know why? Because they're a heck of a lot less stupid than whoever filed those complaints.

Yeesh. Some people.

Who gives a shit what those arrogant self serving twits think anyway? The so called royal family is a tired relic that belongs in the dust bin of history. This is just another distraction story, nothing to see here.

This is pretty dumb. I mean, what if someone's dog had the same name as you. Would you get offended? No, course you wouldn't.

Besides, monkeys are cute

Just more reasons why the monarchy is BS.

Technically, the UK hasn't been a monarchy for a long time. The so called "royal family" is nothing more than a family of figureheads who have fame thrust upon them. A true monarchy rules over the people, but the British royal family doesn't have anything to do with the political system aside from the Queen who still gives royal ascent to bills passed in British colonies, and even that is more of a formality than anything.

I kinda live in the UK so I know all about that, that still doesn't stop the cult of personality surrounding them.

True. They're more celebrities now than anything. Come to think of it, they're no more ridiculous than a typical celebrity either. Celebrities are always trying to trademark names, among other things. I wonder if Kylie and Kendal Jenner managed to secure the rights to their first names? I believe Taylor Swift actually succeeded in trademarking "this sick beat" a while back. If trademarking something is that easy, someone needs to trademark the word "the". They'd make a killing.:D I guess in this case the royal family is less ridiculous by comparison because they aren't actually trying to trademark Charlotte, just forcing a zoo to apologize for using the name. That doesn't mean they're off the hook though.

To all of you that thinks that the zoo shouldn't apologize, can you answer thes question?

If someone named a monkey after your child because they find it funny, would you think that it's okay? Would it be okay to name a monkey after a kid with autism? Would it be okay to name a monkey Robin Williams? Would it be okay to name a monkey after Martin Luther King? Would it be okay to name a monkey after Amanda Todd? And the most important, Is bullying okay? Because this is bullying.

you're assuming they named the monkey after the royal brat because they found it funny. There's no evidence of this anywhere, so I don't know where you're getting that assumption from. Not to mention this is the Japanese we're talking about. A nation of people who are very respectful toward other individuals. So I can't even begin to imagine that the people running this zoo and conducted the poll in for the name went with "Charlotte" out of ill intent or just for shi7s and giggles.

As for the answer to your question. If you don't copyright the name of your child, why should you get upset if someone names an animal after them? Same with the autistic kid. His name isn't special. How many others, both human and animal, have the same name? I'm fairly certain that Robin Williams is a common enough name; just as Martin King is.

Isn't it kind of stupid to call a child a brat not even a week after she was born?

Anyway If I remember correctly the article said something about how the name didn't have any votes before the royal family announced the name. And if we were to look at some of the posts in this thread then it wouldn't be hard to guess where I'm getting that assumption from.

Oh, I'm sorry. I forgot that it's completely impossible for Japanese to be just as mean as the rest of the world. How could I be so stupid that I forgot that they're literally gods that can do no wrong?

Because that's disrespectful. It would be okay if this was just a coincidence but it isn't. The article says that the name had no votes before the royal family announced the name.
