5. She has the best episodes. "Suited for Success". "A Dog and Pony Show". "Sweet and Elite". "Sisterhooves Social". That is all.

To me they're like the worst episodes. Suited for Success is the only one passable.

11. She's a hard worker and endlessly creative in her craft.

Yeah but think about it:

-Twilight: studies magic. WOW

- Pinkie Pie: she's able to make everypony smile. WOW

-Rainbow Dash: she's one of the best flyers in Equestria and also a weather pegasus. WOW

-Fluttershy: she can comunicate with animals and soothes them too. WOW

-Applejack: she works on an apple farm and sells her products to the ponies. WOW

Rarity: makes dresses. WO.... no wait a second, she makes dresses, REALLY? Way to be useless Rarity, everypony's walking naked!

Yes.  Rarity makes dresses.  She's creative.  She takes pride it her work.  She's wonderful at what she does.  Ponies may not wear clothes all the time, but they do.  For special occasions.  Some ponies even wear clothes all the time.  So useless?  That may be a bit extreme.

And tell me now, can you design such beautiful dresses?  More than that, can you actually make them?

Yes and not everypony hangs paintings in the walls of their homes does that make them worthless? Art dosen't have to have a purpose to be art it just has to be, and if ponies didn't wear clothes at least some of the time Rarity wouldn't have any business.

That's harsh, and as someone who hopes to become a filmmaker, very insulting on a personal level.

Come now, A Dog and Pony Show was hilarious!

Now, I'm terribly sorry for actually saying this, not sure if I should even be doing this, but I disagree with that.

First of all you shouldn't be sorry 'cause it's good for everyone to have their own opinions.

I can agree with the fact that with the term useless I might've been I little bit, as you say, "extreme" and that dresses are still used once every 6 months.

Still I can find you at least one thing that I dislike for each episode:

-Suited for Success: why did she had to stress herself so much to make dresses for an event that is occurring in 12 episodes?

-A Dog and Pony Show: No, JUST NO. This episode's always been one of the worst for me, and I think only "A Canterlot Wedding" is worse than this one. Not much to say, it's just bad, it started well and then became bad when Rarity got kidnapped by those dogs.

-Sweet and Elite: I hated her so much, she doesn't want to go to Twilight's birthday when it was thanks to her that she went in Canterlot, she wouldn't have a place to stay if it wasn't for her friend, and yet she didn't want to go at her birthday.

-Sisterhooves Social: this was actually great, can't find anything I dislike here.

So anybody who's main passion is creative endeavors or art is useless?

That's harsh, and as someone who hopes to become a filmmaker, very insulting on a personal level.

You know, that'd make sense if we weren't talking about a cartoon show,  it's just a way I see it I suppose and the show sure isn't inspiring children to not to be creative 'cause it's useless.

Although, she's be my least favourite pony due to her lack of something happening during her episodes, additionally I've never liked her kind of character, she's like the girl who doesn't want to get her dirty. She only did it once to take her sister back, and that is sort of "awwwwwwwwwww" but that was for taking her sister back, I think that's rather important.

Quick questions:

In Suited for Success, did you perhaps think that Rarity likes to plan ahead? There wasn't originally a time crunch, except when Spike made a big thing out of it by mentioning the fashion show to Hoity Toity. I'd suggest rewatching the episode. This is an episode where we really see Rarity's generous nature warring with her desire to make beautiful dresses. She's wonderful in this episode, in my opinion, as her response to her friend's asking "Do you love them as much as we do?" is great. She's happy because they're happy, even if she's scared of Hoity Toity's opinion of her artwork.

In A Dog and Pony Show, I'll admit the message to this episode is a bit skewed. "Listen kids, if you get kidnapped, just whine and drive them crazy until they release you!" But I get the message they were trying to send. Sometimes you underestimate people - you think of them as silly, fashion-obsessed fops who hates getting dirty. But there's more to Rarity then that, as they tried to elaborate in this episode. True, it was done poorly, but the whining/complaining thing is absolutely hilarious. xD

In Sweet and Elite, this is probably my favorite episode of the whole dang show. We clearly see that if given the time and opportunity, Rarity can achieve her dreams - she can get everything she's always wished for. But what happens? She gives it all back. She sticks by her friends firmly, and by having Fancypants encourage her just made my day. Mostly because it breaks down the Canterlot cliché we're getting in MLP, that every upperclass pony is a fickle snob. Sure, Fancypants may be fickle, but he's also quite good-natured; personally, I think he finds Rarity just as "charmingly rustic", because she's trying so desperately to fit in and yet remains thoroughly Ponyvillian.

And don't forget, Twilight loves the dress she made. Rarity had big, elaborate plans for Twilight's party and Twilight's gift, but fate had other ideas. She didn't just fling herself headfirst into high class society, she weight the pros and cons and tried to think of the best decision to make in her situation. And she's right, Twilight will have other birthdays that she gave give silly, impractical gifts on; an invitation to Fancypants' party may never come again.

You're thinking of it as a cartoon, and this isn't a cartoony episode. It's a real-life episode. If given the chance to go to a friend's birthday party or skyrocket your career, personal achievements, and maybe even change the course of your entire life, what would you do?

You're looking at Rarity from face value. On top, she's just a fop who doesn't like to get dirty. But she's so much more than that. She's flawed, a perfectionist, quite vain, and struggles with her relationship with her sister - all of those things are real life issues. But she's also loyal, hardworking, encouraging, and consistently strives to better herself. If you want to look at MLP as a simple cartoon show, go right ahead. Most of the time, that's all it is. But occasionally, there's a flash of reality or seriousness, and Rarity is usually at the core of that.

And you know the funny thing? I'm not a thing like Rarity. I love getting dirty and playing in the mud; I'm haphazard, disorganized, probably a terrible friend when you get down to the bare bones of it, and I've never given my friends anything as significant as a custom, original, beautifully designed dress. Strike that, two custom, original, beautifully designed dresses.

I love Rarity. She's complex, she's flawed, and she's so very relatable. Even if I'm nothing like her, I always know where she's coming from.

EDIT:

Another thing I forgot to mention: Saying that what Rarity does is not wow inducing is not only wrong, but rather insulting to people who are in the craftsmanship/inspirational/art business. I don't make dresses, I write. Nobody reads my writing, does that make it useless? Nobody critiques my art, does that make it junk? No. Of the Mane Six, she's the only one who single-handedly (or hoofedly, if you want to get technical) runs a business. And we see the stresses of such a difficult business as dressmaking. Sweetie Belle messing up her inspiration room could have been disastrous. Being a writer myself, I know how devastating it is to lose your inspiration.

We clearly see that ponies in Canterlot wear clothes all the time; some don't, but some do. Ponyville is a small town, I think you're forgetting, and it's mostly a labor town thanks to Sweet Apple Acres. Down home rustic ponies would be less inclined to wear clothes rather than Canterlot elite who don't do as physically-demanding tasks. In Equestria, clothes are seen as a luxury.

So yeah. TL;DR: You're looking at Rarity on the surface. Look deeper.

, actually, Ashleigh Ball does both AppleJack and RD. Rarity is done by Tabitha St. Germain. smile.png

And Rarity is best pony. >:}

The Dude, actually, Ashleigh Ball does both AppleJack and RD. Rarity is done by Tabitha St. Germain.

I am aware of that, sir. But if you adhere to my theory of the show, all ponies are played by Rainbow Dash. You see, apart from being a very talented flier, she is also an incredible actor. Tara Strong, Tabitha St. Germain, and Andrea Libman are merely there so that Ball does not have to strain herself to make every voice on the show.

Also, I would appreciate it if you stopped calling me 'sir', I am a lady! And I wish to be addressed as such. So you may call me Earl, or Grey, or Earl Grey.

XDD Sorry. I've always wanted to paraphrase that quote somehow, and I've succeeded!

So if you operate on that logic...then Pinkie Pie is technically everypony?

IS EQUESTRIA JUST THE MENTAL RAVINGS OF PINKIE PIE'S INSANE MIND!?!? O_O

Edit: @CITRUS KING46, go ahead, but I'm currently in the throes of severe caffeine withdrawal and it's probably not that well constructed, lol. xD But your post gave me happy fluffy tingles inside. <3 Thank you. :D

No, the whole thing is in the mind of a young, autistic boy who spends his days staring at his snowglobe. He's currently being babysat by his grandfather while his father works at St. Elsewhere.

1. Tabitha St. Germain is a fantastic voice actress. Pretty much every line she recites is perfectly delivered and said to the fullest extent something can be said. The simple act of laughing turns into a joyous exercise in wonderment.

I agree Tabitha is quite the veteran when it comes to voice acting. Especially considering she voiced for previous generations so she already had experience voicing a pony.

2. She has the best mane. It's a pain to draw, but it's totally worth it.

Agree to disagree. (Rainbow manes FTW) I actually tried drawing her mane once and it seemed rather balanced.

3. She has the best balance of negative and positive traits. I like characters who are able to be likeable and good at heart but remain imperfect and relatable.

Hmmm.... i don't know about her having the best positive and negative traits. Sure it's balanced ,but is it really the best? I could claim that Twilight or Rainbow Dash is the same way in a sense.

She's the funniest of the Mane Six (yes, even more than Pinkie Pie). The facial expressions, the deadpan delivery, the occasional slapstick, every emotion taken to the extreme, and again, perfect delivery.

Agree to disagree again. I think Applejack is the funniest honestly due to her lack of understanding of higher society.

She has the best episodes. "Suited for Success". "A Dog and Pony Show". "Sweet and Elite". "Sisterhooves Social". That is all.

I actually agree with this. Sisterhooves Social, A Dog and Pony Show and Suited for Success are all pretty good episodes of mine. It's good to see they're aren't really any bad episodes of Rarity.

Best solo songs, too. No elaboration needed.

I wouldn't count her the best just yet because Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy hasn't gotten a solo song yet. (A solo part but not a solo song!) I think Twilight has the best singing voice though.

She's quick witted and clever, but will use her kung fu to kill you if necessary. As far as i know, no other character knows kung fu, so yeah.

Wrong......Rainbow Dash  was seen trying to teach Applebloom Karate or Kung Fu or whatever..She had a black belt so THERE!!!

She once verbally berated a dragon that was at the time holding her several hundred feet in the air.

Well Rainbow Dash kicked one in the face while Fluttershy scolded it. Rarity's not the only one to do so.

9. Sparity is Best Ship.

It's one of my favorites. Though Spike is kind of a wildcard. You can ship him with piratically anyone.

She's not only cute, but also the most beautiful of the ponies by design.

Meh.

She's a hard worker and endlessly creative in her craft.

I agree. Especially after seeing her Gala Dresses she made in Suited For Success. Her dress was my favorite one after Twilight's.

So if you operate on that logic...then Pinkie Pie is technically everypony?

Let us once again create a syllogism, because syllogisms are just great.

Rainbow Dash = everyone.

Rainbow Dash = Pinkie.

Therefore,

Pinkie = everyone.

So yes. The logic is sound. But as for the show being her insane mental ravings, no. It is actually an accurate depiction of an acid trip I had back in '68.

And I do apologise for the "sir". I realise that Earl Grey is a tea blend (which I do quite enjoy myself) but the "Earl" bit was leading me to believe that you were male.

So the real question is, I suppose, is Pinkie on acid?

Why am I not surprised?

Also, via the Earl Grey: I am a lazy bum who simply named myself the first thing I saw. I happened to be drinking Earl Grey tea at the time, and since the name wasn't taken, it stuck. xD I should probably change it to Lady Grey, or something along those lines...

is Pinkie on acid?

I believe that she is most certainly on some form of psychotropic substance, be it amphetamines, cocaine, acid, or magic mushrooms.

Now, as to those wondering how this ties back into the original topic...

What we have effectively established here is that Rarity is technically everyone (therefore making her best) just as Pinkie is technically everyone (therefore making her best) and just as Rainbow Dash actually is everyone (therefore making her best). Lemme just summarize that with another syllogism.

Rainbow Dash = best pony

Rainbow Dash = everyone

Therefore,

everyone = best pony.

Applejack might be my personal favorite, but when it comes to characters who I feel are the most unique, I would definitely concede that Rarity stands out the most. Also, Rarity is underrated, much like Applejack, and I am perfectly fine with calling either one of them best pony because they don't get as much love. And your reasons are very valid unlike that other topic, and it should be a fact that Tabitha St. Germain does an absolutely phenomenal job with the character. She's easily my favorite voice actress on the show, which says something considering how amazing they all are.

Now I'm tempted to make one of these threads for Applejack, but the mods probably won't like it. :P

Rarity isn't my favorite pony per se, but for all the reasons Earl Grey explained, she is a terrific character.  A few more to add:

13. The way her voice cracks when she goes into Drama Mode.

14. Hers is the only name in FiM that wouldn't be ridiculous in the real world.  I.e., it's at least as good as "Charity" or "Hope," and carries the connotation of uniqueness and value.

15. I like the way that she plays to the stereotype of the shallow, vacuous fashion-victim, but when shit gets real, she does too.  She's the absolute icon of surface appearance, but her character is an excellent demonstration of the fallacy of judging someone by their exterior.

16: In "Suited for Success," the climax scene where Rarity is asked by one of the snooty Canterlot ponies who those five unwashed party-crashing ruffians were (something to that effect, lol) is the point in a lot of sitcoms and other stories where the character in Rarity's position caves to peer pressure, betrays their true friends, and then has to learn the folly of it and find a way to return to their friends' good graces.  Rarity subverts that trope, because she already knows the right answer and she has the courage and loyalty to stand with her friends.

A terrific moment, except for the plot hole: "You don't know who they are?!  I thought everypony did!  Well!  If you had ever been personally invited by Princess Celestia to visit the Great Hall of Canterlot Castle, you would have seen that my friends here are commemorated for the ages in stained-glass--twice--for saving all of Equestria--twice--and the artists also captured the nuances of my mane and tail perfectly in those images, even if I do say so myself."  IOW, the premise, that Rarity admires the Canterlot ponies and wants to ascend to their level is undermined by the fact that she and her Mane 6 friends have at least a dozen levels of fame and glory (not to mention badass) over them.  But still, a great episode, and Rarity is awesome in it.

Rarity is an alright pony.  She's written inconsistently though, her element is supposedly generosity, and she occasionally acts that way, but then there will be episodes where she acts like a greedy and materialistic bitch (Sweet and Elite for one, Secret of my Excess for another).  She is mid tier horse

I really didn't like Rarity at first, but now I consider her one of the best.  She has the funniest lines in the show, in my opinion anyways.  I always end up loving almost every scene she's in, because it always ends up in a funny expression or quote.
