Is it possible that Twilight sparkle and the cast are actually much older?

Lets not forget the Doctor mentioned in the Slice of life episode that he was also hundreds of years old. Yes I'm aware he is a reference to doctor who, but in terms of the show and how casually he mentioned it you can surmise that ponies can live for a several hundred years before they even start looking like Granny Smith. You could also hazard the logical leap that only Alicorns and Earth ponies live that long considering the only extremely old ponies we've seen that have stated they were hundreds of years old were Earth ponies. If you have an example to the contrary I'd love to see it.

Then there is the simple fact that we don't know how their years progress, and why they choose to use the moon as a measurement of time over the sun more often than not. Since the Sun rotates around the planet in the Ponyverse, You can't necessarily assume that their year is the same as ours, i.e it may not be 365 days like ours.

I completely forgot about the doctor, that's actually a really good point.

Reading trough this I came to another idea

What if a year isnt as long as our years?

Episode 20 of S2 had a calendar.

that calender would show 15 days. If now 12 months(If even 12) then it would be already only around 180 days instead of our 365 days

So mayby they have way less days(Or moons) then we have per year?

Legends never die. Ponies neither.

I was actually going to bring up the Doctor's remark, but you beat me to it. Though the idea that earth ponies may live longer than the other races is an interesting idea. Perhaps it's part if not is the unique magic that earth ponies possess.

Now hear me out on this for a moment please.

We know Tirek stole some form of magic from the earth ponies but it wasn't mentioned what that magic was. We also saw that after he absorbed earth pony magic he also became a lot healthier and looked more in shape and 'in the prime of his life' than he did with any of his other transformations from stealing pony magic.

We also know that becoming an alicorn imbues the pony with the magic/strength of all three races, and that by becoming an alicorn their life span is increased.

So what if earth ponies possessed an inherent magic that extended their life spans due to a connection to the earth in a somewhat similar fashion to Antaeus from Greek mythology who was immortal and invincible as long as he was in contact with the earth.

For alicorns their unison of all three races magic would allow them to draw on this strength in the way earth ponies inherently do while not being required to physically be touching the earth.

Just a theory.

Well according to EQG the mane 6 are like 16-18.

I would say that they are around that age even in the main series.

Seeing how Equestria already works a lot differently than our world, what's stopping the educational system and what is considered being an actual adult and being allowed to have your own businesses from being completely different as well?

That's a nice addition to the theory, I never really thought of it that way before but you'e right, He did look a whole lot younger from absorbing earth pony magic.

On a random note, no matter what EQG says, I will never accept the mane six as being younger than adults :P

20ish is about what I view them as.

I suppose they could be 20ish in pony years :)

My sweet Luna this is a good question! Why did I not look at this earlier, (note to self read things) without Cannon answers to really the length of any event nor a pony's life span there are limitless possibilities. I would assume if this question was raised then the answer would be that of they have human like life times. But until then what the answer I love it a huge hole right in front of us what is the answer to it?

I'm gonna follow this thread and make a vid on it when I return from my holidays. Thanks to Vulcan for the Idea. You good sir shall get a mention for such a great idea! (if you don't mind)

Man this is why I signed up to these forums to find questions like this and work on the answer!

Maybe each season is one year long. But they don't do an nightmare night or a christmas episode every season. They only do it when they have an idea for one xD

Well, in Winter Wrap Up, Twilight claimed this:

Twilight Sparkle: No Spike, Ponyville was started by Earth ponies, so for hundreds of years they've never used magic to clean up winter. It's traditional. [sigh]

While this could be read as "Ponyville has existed for hundreds of years" and never used magic to wrap up winter, it could as easily mean a tradition of Earth ponies that existed even before the literal founding of Ponyville, not to use magic in winter wrap up. Either that or Twilight was simply mistaken. I don't think most ponies have lifespans much longer than you would expect. It's not like this show has an unambiguous chronology.

That makes sense. I say ponies live for as long as we humans do. It's atleast my headcanon. ^_^

It is possible they could be older than what one would think assuming one season equals one year in terms of the passing of time as that would put the Mane 6 in their early to mind twenties assuming they started around 18-20 years old in Season 1. No specifics have been mentioned in terms of time passing aside from that 100 Moons comment made in Apple Family Reunion in regards to the last one that took place in the very first episode, and that could mean a lot of things depending on what constitutes a moon.

Admittedly I am not a huge fan of the one year theory as it does not sound very feasible given that is a lot of events to compress in one year, but someone did raise a valid point about what constitutes a year in Equestria.

Equestria Girls is really not the best place to gauge their ages since that alternate world tends to age or de-age various characters in order to fit the setting. It may be an alternate world, but it is not a parallel world.
