technology Bootcamp help

So while I'm still saving for a proper PC, I was thinking that maybe I could just download bootcamp or run windows on my Mac. The thing is, last time I tried that I ended up getting locked out of my computer all together and had to have it restarted at a store.

Could somepony perhaps take me through a brief tutorial of the whats and hows of running windows on my mac so I can actually play some of the games I want?

Well I did go through Valley Forge Military College's boot camp but did not end up joining one of the branches proper, so it's not entirely unrelated to my life.

Before you try Bootcamp try using Winebottler.

It is a compatibility layer to run Windows software on OSX

Could it run games like MMOs?

I could use some help if you can spare it. This is giving me trouble with how it's supposed to work.

There is a good tutorial video that takes you through the installation of Windows using Bootcamp, and Apple themselves have a pretty extensive installation guide located here. Both of these use Windows 7 as the OS of choice, though I don't believe it's any different for installing 8 (and I would assume 10).

This is the video in question:

Just remember that even with Windows installed Mac's won't support any additional GPU drivers you might have used on your PC, this means you might bump into the odd performance/graphical issue or glitch.

I hope those guides can help you out though. :)

Incidentally, what kind of PC are you hoping to save up for? :ooh:

Thank you and the one I have on tab is an "abs dreadnought" I think it's called.

Ah I see, pre-built system? I would recommend if you have the know how to build one yourself or are aware of someone who does and might be willing to help you, custom built PC's are generally better value for your money. A lot of factory built PC's tend to overcharge and/or have hardware inside them that's either susceptible to breaking or is a pain in the arse to replace if they do become faulty. You'd more than likely be able to build something superior for around the same price.

No worries if it wouldn't be feasible for you though. :)

God damn everypony tells me I should, but I don't have the expertise to know how to do it. I don't know how to identify the pieces. Imagine asking someone who was born at the dawn of the steam engine trying to build a PC, that's me.

Call me a sucker but I simply must buy one that I can just plug into a wall and have it run.

Heehee, well at least you're honest about it.  :P Admittedly, I'm not that knowledgeable on it either. I have a friend who helps with most of the heavy work.

That's fine though, I wasn't intending to paint factory built PC's in a bad light or anything. They'll get the job done like any other PC, and for a lot less hassle in most cases. The important part is it's a big improvement over what you already have I'm sure.

Good luck with getting Bootcamp running as an alternative in the meantime!
