    • No. They should stay foals for the duration of the series.

One thing that more often than not that the writers tend to do in cartoons (unless otherwise stated) is keep the characters at the same ages as before, even when it's unnecessary to do so. But hopefully this won't apply too much to MLP.

Case in point: Pound Cake and Pumpkin Cake.

It's been 3 (soon to be 4) seasons since they were born in "Baby Cakes" and with Shining Armor and Cadence about to have a foal, one has to wonder if it's time for the Cake fouls to start to grow up a little bit. Not too abruptly of course but little bits such as:

  • learning to speak a few words.
  • being able to eat more foods without any difficulty
  • attending the Ponyville daycare and/or preschool
  • developing slightly more individual personas
  • etc.

What do you think, would you like to see the Cake twins go from babies to preschool age?

You mean, like the Cutie Mark Crusaders have?

Seriously, though, if the take the (albeit disjointed) recurrence of certain events as a clue, in 5 seasons only about two years have passed within the show. Still, since another baby is coming due next season, perhaps now would be a good time to give those two a little boost.

I would love to see them be older and giving Pinkie a hard time like they did as infants. :3 That oculd make for some hilarious shenanigans. Maybe Pinkie offers to look after them for a day, kinda like Fluttershy, but the stress causes Pinkamena to come about, as Pinkie thinks that being harsh is the only thing that works. Might tread dangerously close to being just like the Flutters episode with the CMC's, but who knows what the writers could do with that.

Yes! They can grow to be older kids (eventually) and then get the CMC to help them find their purposes in life. :D

Now that would be something I'd like to see! I wonder what their cutie marks would end up being.

  • 2 years later...

They should grow older than the CMC, just like Apu's children outgrew Maggie Simpson.

Spoiler

No, but seriously... both the Cake twins and the CMC should have already changed their designs to older ones.

8 seasons and the twins still haven't aged.

Actually the twins were born in mid Season 2 with the majority of their focus episode, "Baby Cakes" happening when they were 1 month old. So, it's more like 6 and and a half season.

In all seriousness, it's not uncommon for cartoon characters to NOT physically age even after several in-universe years have passed. It's called the Floating Timeline or as TV Tropes calls it "Not Allowed to Grow Up"

Quotes from Not Allowed to Grow Up trope Examples under Friendship is Magic (May contains spoilers up to mid Season 8)

The Cutie Mark Crusaders are a trio of fillies who were on the hunt for their cutie marks until Season 5. During that time, other foals in the series were getting theirs about Once a Season. Finally averted in "Crusaders of the Lost Mark" where all three of them finally got their cutie marks. Age wise, their voice actresses have aged, and thus Applebloom and Sweetie Belle voices have deepened, however they still use the same foal designs they did in season 1. The series handwaves it by saying only a year has passed since episode 1. Eventually this was subverted. The season 7 episode "Forever Filly" has Rarity trying to bond with her sister but treating Sweetie Belle as if she was a little filly. It lampshades how much the Crusaders have developed since season 1, even featuring them with slightly taller designs than in previous seasons. The CMC seem more like preteens in later seasons rather than the little kids they were in season 1.

The Cake twins initially seemed like an example of this, as by the season 6 episode On Your Marks they still seemed to be infants, although they no longer wore diapers like in Baby Cakes. However, as of A Hearth's Warming Tale they have been shown behaving more autonomously and singing carols (though their distinct voices aren't heard), so they do seem to be aging—at a rate somewhere between a pony's and a human's. In The Mane Thing About You, Pinkie has a line that suggests that the Cake twins are either one year old or are almost one year old. This explains why they're talking and also shows that there's been at least two years in-series since the first episode. However, "The Mane Thing About You" also plays this straight as the foals still look and (mostly) act like infants despite being toddler-aged.

Gummy is Pinkie's pet baby crocodile. He doesn't ever get any larger no matter how many seasons go by. He might actually be an adult though, as his internal voice in the 100th episode implies.

Dragons age differently than ponies, but Spike has spent the entire series as a "baby dragon" (which seems to be the equivalent of a 9-13 year old). He didn't start maturing until season 7's "Molt Down" where

Spoiler

he molted and gained wings.

He's still a baby dragon but he's an older one.

END QUOTE

Well, my point is that it really shouldn't come as an surprise that the Baby characters aren't aging in the main show itself. Still, there's always fan fiction of the Twins grown up as teens, adults, maybe even with children of their own. Nothing's stopping you from reading or even writing such fan fiction ideas.
