technology Windows phone or Android

I want a new smartphone. I'm not one of those people who buy the newest/most amazing smartphone as I don't need one with specs that high. All I really use it for is youtube, browsing the internet, texting/phoning people and playing the odd game like Candy Crush or whatever.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 mini right now and I've had it for while.

I don't know whether to switch to Windows or to stick with Android. I don't want an iPhone, they piss me off.

I do want a phone that you can add a micro SD card to.

What do you prefer?

Why do you dislike iPhone if I may ask?

Also for your needs, I would say stick with Android since the app support is higher, so the few apps you do use you at least can be certain they will be updated to work. I would go with like the Galaxy S5 which you can probably get for cheap if you can find it.

Otherwise it would depend on your provider. Who is your current provider?

And I prefer iPhone honestly.

It's strongly depends how you want to use it. I bought new phone couple weeks ago by myself.

I wanted phone which I could use instead of PC with monitor and keyboard (it's useful in trips if you don't want to bring laptop).

And Winphone and Android can do it.

BUT! Winphone is too raw - not enough useful soft. Android is cheaper - you can find Android with same specs with lower price. Winphone still has poor model choice - in local shops I found only extra cheap (<$200) and extra expensive (almost $1000) Winphones. No average models.

I got Galaxy S5.

Hope it will help you.

The HP Elite X3 has a very nice feature: Continuum. Essentially you plug the phone into a dock and the dock you plug in a keyboard, mouse and monitor and it turns into a full Windows 10 PC. The drawback though is that since the phone is ARM based, app support is limited. Once they make an x64 based one it will be a perfect phone for the traveling business man and the person who wishes to replace their laptop.

I've used Windows phone for a while, it's honestly not a bad platform. It's very unique in the ui compared to Android and iOS who are blatently copying one another.

If your needs are a phone with an internet connection, Windows phone is a pretty good choice, and a unique one at that. It has a fair number of apps and games, though not as much support as Android or iOS. Still MUCH better than blackberry's app store from what I remember of it. Cortana is also leagues above Google Now, though it's eventually getting released on Android too.

Also if you're a solo developer, C# > Java. I hated creating apps for Android and switching my development platform in the middle of my semester reduced so much stress.

Yes, you are right. I wanted to get device with Win10 Mobile firstly.

But HP Elite X3 still wasn't released. And what it's price? I think it will be about $1000. Plus dock station. My budget was $500.

Also to use Android as desctop is pretty funny ^_^. Of course it looses in comparison with Win10 mobile..

Windows phone is more or less copying many other designs and tweaking them. Just like iOS and Android. Every OS is more or less a tweak of an existing OS.

Oh god... I had forgotten about them... I remember their biggest selling point a while back "You can emulate Android now!"

Yeah a step in the right direction, but not at the right price point yet. Also ARM based... >_>

I installed Java IDE right on my phone, plugged monitor and keyboard and have a fun ^_^

I didn't anything serious, just couple simple apps which was installed for testing right after compilation.

And yeah. Visual Studio is still the best. ^_^

Well. ARM is enough for internet browsing and working with docs.

Even some graphic apps. I drawn this sketch on my phone today XD

Problem is though that there is no point in a full Windows 10 desktop if you can't support a majority of desktop apps. :P

Most new Windows apps uses .Net platform environment. .Net Runtime like Java Runtime Environment is architecture independent. In theory, of course. I never made apps for windows phone ^_^

I don't like iPhones as you can't open them up, you can't install third-party apps without jailbreaking, it's heavily locked down without jailbreaking etc.

I never liked Blackberry either. My sister gave me her old Blackberry a few years ago, I really didn't like it.

I`m a pround owner of some windows phones
And I must tell ya, they are extraordinary for my needs as a smartphone: browsing internet, messaging, skype, music, and cute games :3
They don`t have so many games nor apps, they have the main ones

I have my disregards for an android smartphone, for it`s lack of stability

Just curious because your first post makes it sound like you are a very basic user who doesn't do a lot with your phone... What exactly do you feel you would need jailbreaking for? It doesn't sound like you'd need to do anything that requires Jailbreaking unless you are trying to steal apps. These days that's pretty much the only thing people jailbreak for nowadays, sure there are tweaks you can apply, but most people just jailbreak to get free apps.

More the fact that I should be able to do that if I really wanted to. I did jailbreak my old iPod Touch just because I was bored and wanted to customise it. I also find them really overpriced :/

No offense but I would be more concerned about the features I actually intend on using not what I "could" be using. I mean there are tons of features on Windows that OS X doesn't have, but I don't use those features on Windows so if I was using OS X I probably wouldn't notice the difference. Yes, I get the principle of the matter, but to me, I find it pointless to complain about what I am not using.

I mean you should definitely get the phone that makes sense for you. I sell phones for a living right now so I understand. What would  you consider your price range for your ideal phone?

I own a Windows Phone, I got it for $60 and I don't even use the phone aspect. I use it as a media device and for that, it is pretty much perfect. The UI is clean and easy to use and there are some great apps to get. I personally think that Android is a bit too scattered, whereas the Windows OS is very clean and feels very reliable.

It depends on what you are wanting, but I prefer Windows Phone. I think it is a great device.

Thats not quite true, most that jailbreak do it for emulators and to be on the cutting edge on terms of features, some people even jailbreak just because it gives them a sense of freedom

Absolutely. I am a man of practicality though. If I don't NEED something, I don't feel the urge to get it/pay for it. Like Sony's phones have playstation remote play on them which is really cool, but do I see myself ever using it? Probably not.

I probably wouldnt want to use a windows phone in 2021, since they never really had a whole lot of app support

Windows Phone could have succeeded if they started off subsidizing devices (especially since by the time Windows Phone came out, people were still barely getting modern smart phones yet),
since the devices were quite expensive and unpalatable to people paying around £100 for their phone at the absolute maximum, and they usually started at the £100 range,
the final nail in the coffin was cheap android phones comming out and actually being quite popular

I liked the concept of Windows Phone 10 (of which they seem to have released it then quickly cancelled it, which was sad, cause unlike windows 10, it was actually fast and intutitive) since it was great for day to day use (if app support actually became a thing) and could have been very useful, especially during lockdowns, when people worked from home, and many people had to actually go out and buy a laptop since they didn't have one, since Windows Phone 10 had a desktop mode
