technology Keeping updated as technology progresses?

Most of the tech stuff I own has been around since 2014. My PC is mostly comprised of parts that was released last year, a Skylake CPU, Z170 MoBo, and a GTX 980 Ti. The rest, not 100% sure. My smartphone (never had one until last year) is from 2014. (HTC One M8) Keyboard and mouse (Corsair K65 RGB and Logitech G502) are also from 2014. (I don't count adding RGB as "new".)

Although, AMD are set to bring out Polaris GPUs in a few months and their Zen CPUs later this year. Nvidia are working on Pascal GPUs. Those are expected next year. I may or may not give any of those a whirl when they come out.

My car however, a 2009 Kia Spectra, is pretty outdated by 2016 standards. I would like to "upgrade" to something a little faster.

This would do nicely:

The most notable piece of tech in it is Ford's SYNC 3 that uses a 6.5 inch touch screen that allows you to connect your phone and do stuff with it. Oh, and Sirius XM, which is awesome. But I'm a car guy, and stuff like that is not a top priority.

Sadly, this won't be nearly as good as Android Auto and Apple carplay, but its as best as we can get

@OP, I'm just now hopping on the bluetooth fad personally... lol

Nope, there is way too much released way too quickly for me to keep up with absolutely everything. I keep up with gaming consoles, mostly but other than that I got my desktop in I don't remember if it was 2009 or 2010 and my laptop in 2013. And my car is a 1994 Lexus (a hand me down from my mother), it was state of the art for its time but though it is in good condition is showing its age in a few ways such as me often having to whack the back of the dashboard to get the speedometer to work for example.

One big thing that bothers me is the growing number of gears present today in modern automatic transmissions. Do you really need more than 6 forward gears to accelerate? I know it's for fuel economy and also as a marketing pitch but it seems more like a automotive hype than true innovation.

Hardware doesn't really excite me that much. As long as my computer remains fast and is able to run my everyday programs, I don't really have much of a reason to upgrade. Plus if I did, I would just upgrade the graphics card because the CPU, RAM and motherboard are perfectly fine and even a little overkill for what I use this thing for. The same goes for phones, I used my galaxy nexus for four to five years before I finally upgraded when it got way too sluggish.

Cars... are just not a good idea to be bleeding edge with. They're incredibly expensive, they drop in value incredibly fast, and for me, they're mostly just tools used as a means to an end. My only requirements in terms of car technology beyond actually working is a basic radio and air conditioning for the summer.

Having more gears does help with fuel economy like you say, but also acceleration if used effectively.
