Is the TV show becoming more like the Comics?

I had a feeling last season, and I'm feeling it more this one so far.

- doing more with lesser characters, including spontaneous cameos or small-but-interesting roles, and even giving them some more depth

- Pop culture/historical references with an equine twist

- Lots of references to the past (though that was fairly inevitable)

- A tad more mature (and maybe a little mundane) than it used to be

- Mixing and matching characters one didn't think about crossing paths

Now I know there are other factors, but surely I'm not the only one who's noticed or is curious.

Personally, I don't think so as while the show is doing a bit more mature stuff, it's still not to the level of freedom the comics can get away with. As for the other stuff, other than developing on the background ponies and other characters more to keep up with the developing mane 6, those are stuff the show has been doing already in my opinion.

Or is the TV show becoming more like the IDW Comics?

-Honestly, it was bound to happen sooner or later. There's only so much you can do with the Mane Six before they start going in circles. Besides, I think it's a good idea for the creative team to have more characters they can work with.

-They've been doing those since day one. Maybe not as often, but there have been a variety of pop culture references since the first season. (See Pinkie Pie doing a carbon copy of Bugs Bunny's schtick in Putting Your Hoof Down, for example.)

-Again, they've been doing that since day one. The frequency may have been increased, but this is hardly something that came out of nowhere.

-I'd agree about the show becoming more mature, but more mundane? Admittedly, it's hard to make a long-running show feel as new or exciting as it was back when it started, but I think S5 and S6 contained a number of memorable episodes.

The show is growing up and maturing somewhat, as all shows do over time. To be fair, there do seem to be some teething troubles with Season 6, but this wouldn't be the first time a season started out underwhelming. I think we should wait until the halfway point of the season to draw any conclusions.

As for whether or not the show is becoming more like the IDW comics, I'd say "no," simply because the show seems to be maintaining its quality (with a few peaks and valleys here and there), whereas the comics have consistently been getting worse as time goes on.

The show hasn't shifted focus on bad OCs or have been on the levels of bad things like The Good The Bad The Ponies, the Rainbow Dash Micro or the EQG Holiday special, or has made terrible adventure arcs that rely too much on bad bait-n-switches

I don't know now...Starlight, Sunburst, and Flurry Heart more or less cover the "bad OCs" part, while "The Cutie Re-Mark" and "The Crystalling" (and maybe a couple of others) could be potentially be charged with baiting and switching...

Doing more with lesser characters aint a bad thing.

Pop culture/historical references happen with every TV show and a ton of movies.

Mixing and matching characters happens in just about any long running series.
