Fluttershy's otaku side

So, fluttershy has a bit of an issue compared to other characters in that its harder for them writers to come up with alot of episodes besides her overcoming shyness due to not alot of hobbies or life goals apart from animals.

but in Scaremaster, we got a nice scene of Fluttershy's anime cut outs, and while its a Throwaway gag, having Fluttershy be into FIM's version of anime in their world would make for some decent episodes IMO.


What kind of plots would you like to see if they were to expand on that? Such as Fluttershy drawing amateur manga in her spare time and one of the others trying to get her to publish it? Or her wanting to go to an anime convention with one of the other 5?

I just think it's hilarious that Fluttershy is into anime. It could also be used to expand on her a bit, since the only interest she's been shown to have is animals, as well as singing briefly in Filli Vanilli.

I suddenly think it'd be hilarious if Discord ended up zapping fluttershy into an anime (along with the other 5) in order to let her live our IRL the show's she watches, with a constant art shift as discord would toss the mane six from Anime cliche to cliche.

 

The only problem would be having Discord be sufficiently dickish about the situation (like Q whenever he'd put picard in a situation like that) without him intentionally antagonizing fluttershy.

Definitely conventions. So, SO much to do with that! Anime references out the wazoo, con culture and tropes, even past gen pony cameos (like artist Toola Roola) as an easter egg in the Artist Alley. Or IDW comic references, with somepony trying to sell an ugly Twilight fakie that one of the minotaurs who were trying to destroy the deer's forest, had made as merch. (Name of comic, anyone?)

Well, I really doubt that her weeb side will be developed much. It's still a show for small children and they don't really watch anime or go to anime conventions. So it would make very little sense to base a entire episode on that. Perhaps we'll see one or two easter eggs but nothing more.

I would love the writers to develop Fluttershy a lot more (she was my favourite my first watch through). I actually like the ideas being banded about here, what they can't do though, is anime. Namely because there's no TV in this ponyverse. The idea of her being into something different to the rest and going to a convention is a great idea though, to put it all together what could happen is she could be into manga (or something similar). Ponies obviously write and draw so it's not absurd to think that there are ponies out there making comics with an art style akin to anime/manga. Maybe Fluttershy is actually kinda embarassed that she's into it and tries ot hide it from the others, possibly because she likes a certain series that is either very weird (so thinks the others wouldn't accept/understand) or very violent action heavy (which is unlike her and thinks the others would think less of her for it being so against her type). So have an episode of Fluttershy clearly keeping a secret from the others, disappearing with odd excuses, that forces the others to try to discover what it is, mix in with Flutter doing her best to hide it (hilarity ensues). Big reveal of what she's into, didn't think they would accept it...Surprise! They do! Then have another episode in the future where she goes to a con, taking one of the other mane 6 along with her because she's not confident enough to go herself. She seems her usual shy self at first, but then turns total fan girl at stuff, throw in some convention tropes/gags and we're done.

I seriously doubt the writers will ever do anything with this little bit of Fluttershy's character. As you said, this was a throwaway gag and that was it.

 

Although, it is a fun little bit of character for fans to play with. Like right now I'm writing EQG Fluttershy as a straight up Japanophile, who loves everything to do with the Land of the Rising Sun.

On the serious note, they could try and make her like Spike and Shining in regards to these things, but more reserved and cautious. They should also expand on her profession. Too bad no one on the current team seems to know jack shit about nature, it being one of her comfort zones where she can take the lead and do something other than being a token introvert and an occasional Snow White. We need Fluttershy the Cockatrice Hunter!

Not to mention the lack of deepening character-wise compared to the rest of the Mane6. What  Flutters episodes are about? Overcoming shyness and fear, testing her kindness, love of animals and....... nothing else. There's hardly anything different shown about her outside those elements in her episodes

You could say the same thing about the other characters as well. What are Applejack episodes about? Basically her family, being a hard working farmer, and her stubbornness. What about Rainbow Dash? Her love of flying, Wonderbolts, ego, her always trying to maintain her "cool tough girl image."....... nothing else. I'm not hating on these characters but you and other fans' generalization of Fluttershy could be applied to the other five as well. How many times have we've seen Rarity trying to establish her business and open stores, trying to fit in to rich, high society, or do something fashion related? I'm probably going to get crap for this later but I don't care.  I really don't understand the complaint "Durr all Fluttershyz eps r all da same." when most characters are guilty of this as well.

I highly doubt we'll see anything more than subtle acknowledgement of what is most likely nothing more than a side hobby for Fluttershy, but I do think it's highly plausible that something akin to manga would exist in Equestria. Probably not anime as there isn't really TV in their world. Of course there'd have to be somepony who makes manga, and its uncertain whether it would be a group of ponies akin to the Japanese, or if it would have some other origin. However, it could still exist, and it would be perfect for reading in Fluttershy's hideaway under her bed. Any kind of reading, whether it be chapter books, graphic novels or even tankobon would be ideal entertainment for somepony with that kind of setup.

I think most kids are oblivious to the difference between anime and western cartoons. As long as it's animated and entertaining, they just watch the thing and they don't really research it. 

 

(I'm talking about preschoolers here, just to make things clear. Older kids may be a little more aware of that kind of stuff.)
