Trixie's Talent

I'm not sure how much this bothered anyone else, but the new Trixie episode flat out says that she can't do real magic. This doesn't at all reflect how she appeared before, where she could use multiple different spells with great skill and talent. It doesn't sit well with me, "stage magic" is meant to be fake tricks that are set up to give you the impression of something real, an illusion, something only good for tricking you into thinking it's real. Her magic very clearly had practical use to it, and I think they just wasted that. Now we won't ever see her do cool magic with Twilight or anything, unless they retcon that, which I doubt they will.

It feels like they wasted her character completly, am I the only one dissatisfied with this?

The weird part is that in the comics Trixie attended Celestia's school for the gifted at the same time as Twilight

The comics contradict what happened in the show sometimes, so many don't count them as canon to the story. Other than the comics, Faust herself did say that Trixie went to the school for gifted unicorns, and it totally matches the character we've seen.

Anyway:

- Trixie bent light and used it to physically affect Rainbow Dash, spinning her into the ground. That wasn't an illusion, it was like Discord levels of screwing with reality.

- She can also transform objects into other different things, which again, isn't an illusion.

- She summoned a storm cloud and used lightning zap Rainbow Dash in the ass, the second time even bigger against the giant bear. Again, not an illusion.

Weather magic, transformation, great skill and preciseness using magic, and I bet she could have done far more. Now she apparently can only do fake magic, which makes zero flipping sense.

Her special talent is in stage magic and performing.

Performing what? Performances require some kind of skill or talent, and like I said before, stage magic is fake.

Trixie can do a variety of spells, which unicorns that don't have a talent in magic could not do.

I have no idea where people get this from, there is nothing in the show that ever suggested that Trixie's magic was only illusions meant for show. I'm tired of the writers blatantly ignoring what happened in previous episodes.

The new ep basically ruined the one thing Trixie had going for her. She had nothing at this point, not even any friends, and now what makes her special is reduced to nothing. In comparison to Starlight/Twilight's ridiculously stupid levels of magical talent, that makes it even worse. They stunted her potential as a character, and a pony. I'd rather have seen Trixie help Twilight out with a new spell or something, and use it to stop a bad guy, or anything. Having Trixie finally be accepted and them become friends would be nice too, the new episode did her no justice.

The weird part is that in the comics Trixie attended Celestia's school for the gifted at the same time as Twilight

Overall, I thought the comic did way better with Trixie's character than the show ever did. It even showed her alternate self, who became an alicorn princess. I thought that was cool. It devalued how flipping special Twilight was, basically shoving the shows overbearing view of "destiny" into the trash can.

In universe explanation - does this sound familiar?

"I can't do anything right"!

I've always maintained that Trixie may have a low self image hidden beneath the overtly self-congratulatory facade. Her true self came out in the new episode. Of course she knows real magic. That quote doesn't mean the writers forgot the past.

"The birth of the reader must be at the cost of the death of the Author" ( Barthes 1470). The Norton Anthology of Theory and Criticism.

That works well for shows about cartoon ponies.

Trixie doesn't appear to have a terribly high level of magical ability, but then, the kinds of tricks she does on stage don't involve high levels of magic. Perhaps Trixie dropped out of Celestia's school. In any case, her talent doesn't seem to have anything to do actual magic.

My biggest problem with Trixie is the fact that she's a unicorn stage magician using stage magic in a world where real magic exists. It'd be one thing if she was an Earth Pony or Pegasus, but she's a unicorn and lives in a world where unicorns are capable of using normal magic.

For me it just makes her a fundamentally lame character

Trixie was pretty well off with her traveling career of magic shows, so It made sense that she was talented using it. Otherwise, how the heck would she be keeping herself alive and healthy?

Unless they retcon this "stage magic" nonsense from the new ep, her character is completly wasted to me. They made Twilight and her clone so amazingly magically talented and special beyond any reasonable measure, and now Trixie apparently can't even do "real magic"? Bullshit.

Trixie can bend rainbows because rainbows are made of light, not physical matter. Her powers is Stage magic and in the mlp universe that means she can only manipulate anything that isn't physical and they do so in a way that makes for a great show!

Stage magic is all "smoke and mirrors". You know, smoke...as in gas and something not physical!

Let me explain, she can use her magic to lift things because all unicorns can, but she cannot fire a Lightning bolt like twilight can because that has too strong of a "physical" propriety to it! She cannot teleport to teleport out of the beasts mouth when fired into it because that would require her manipulating a physical body which is her own and it requires far greater study and magical power that she has.

Her powers is the ability to alter sight and sound which means everything you can imagine regarding stage magic since if you can control your audiences sight and hearing, you control their perception, if you control their perception, you basically control them enough to fool them into seeing and hearing whatever you want which is the entire basis of stage magic and thus, her illusions and stage magic!

Twilight could never possibly match Trixie in Stage magic because it requires magic that she has never exclusively studied. No matter how much she tried to study it or how quickly she would learn, Trixie has spent her entire life exclusively studying perceptive magic and twilight has studied physical magic and maybe touched a little on perceptive magic.

So there you have it! Trixie has the power of Perceptive Magic while Twilight and other unicorns spend their lives learning Physical magic which is regarded as "real" magic since the things they control are more real "tangible, touchable, etc"  than light and sound.

The very first episode Trixie was in explained how unicorns talented in magic can do multiple different spells. With Trixie doing this as her career, we can safely assume that she is good at doing magic.

"Trixie can bend rainbows because rainbows are made of light, not physical matter"

She can also use transformation and weather magic. The light was also bent in a way that physically effected matter (Rainbow Dash). That is screwing with reality on a higher level that most unicorns could do.

I'll just end with saying that stage magic is retarded in a world like this, and would make Trixie a lame character if that was all she could do. I'm firmly against this, but the fandom and writers don't seem to think that.

Trixie will always be able to do real magic. The show has treated her like crap enough, lets not take away the one thing she has.

Apparently all the only talent they've left for The (once) Great and Powerful Trixie is the seemingly bottomless capacity to apologize for living. Sucky, very sucky.  :unamused:

What makes it even worse is that the writers actually had the audacity to make Twilight resentful and unaccepting of Trixie, and at the same time accept Starlight and give her friendship lessons. That is the biggest load of crap... It was the falling off point for me, I quit the show after this ep. I've given it far too many chances. I went from disliking Twilight, to straight up hating her now. I can't stand either of the main characters, and now my favorite is reduced to nothing in the presence of their endlessly amazing lives. I honestly expect nothing anymore, they will probably mess Trixie up again if they decide to use her.

It was the best explaination for what I could think of. Maybe she meant real magic as in "powerful" magic and teleportation is harder?

I forgot to mention that she tried to kill herself in the ep. She jumped into a lion's mouth hoping to be saved, it's like playing Russian roulette with your life. I can't fucking believe they actually did this, even after all the crap she went though before, they did this. Fuck.  :okiedokieloki:

In that case, the episode just used a terrible choice of dialog. It made her talent seem fake, like a magic show in real life. That would be completly ballocks in Equestria, the writers don't even care. Trixie was well off doing magic for a living, the direction they went with her is terribly stupid.

Not to mention the tricks she has been shown doing are far outclassed by most of our own magicians. Like that guy who can walk through a gate, or that tablet trick where that guy pulls any item shown in a picture in his tablet into the real world, flying, making the statue of liberty disappear and so on.

Did any magician in our world ever summon a storm cloud and use lightning to zap someone? Trixie could easily beat any real life magician, no contest.

Have you seen Trixies magic show? It involves sawing a pony in half, simple card tricks and a bunny out of a hat.

Take a look at these top 4 examples of mine and tell me Trixie's greatest trick ever that she could never do without starlights help compares to it!

Even a storm cloud with some lightning is doable if someone wanted to make i t happen. Smoke, a mirror and a tesla coil!

Even if you don't agree with me on this one, it gives me a chance to share stuff....hope you like the vids.

Well I don't agree in the slightest. Trixie's show was nothing like that first time around, she used actual magic to impress the audience. These people have been exposed to magic their whole life, do you honestly believe that fake parlor tricks would be enough to make a living? I've made my case pretty clear by now, there was nothing ever to suggest that Trixie did fake shit, which would be completly impractical in this world, and stupid beyond belief. The very episode she was in explained how unicorn talent works. This is one of the reasons I hate the direction of Trixie's character, this vid sums it up pretty well.

To be honest Trixie is like Scootaloo even though she can't fly it does not mean she is the weakest she finds other means to get air born which is her scooter and Trixie not having the ability to use magic like Twilight, Rarity etc puts her talents into magic entertainment it shows that she may not be a powerful unicorn, but her talents are still there with magic she just uses magic in another form.

I think people confuse Trixie being weak because Twilight is overpowered beyond any reasonable measure, Trixie isn't a broken magic user. She is definitely talented, so I think the Scootaloo comparison doesn't work. Rarity is talented in design, not magic. That's why Trixie can do a variety of different spells, Rarity only has a couple unique to her. That isn't to say she can't do more, I'm sure training could bring out her magic.

Scoots has her own unique talent though, she doesn't need to fly. We don't know exactly if she can never fly, that has yet to be confirmed on the show.

Honestly her talent is being a boast buster. And I am not kidding.

..And thinking that's she's bffs with a pony she's only known for an afternoon.  Can't forget that!

Right, like how Starlight quickly became bffs with the mane six, right after trying to ruin their lives.

Maybe Starlight's talent is being the creator's pet.

That doesn't make any sense, and that would be stupid.

I'm kidding, don't get upset.  I think it's pretty dumb that Starlight was forgiven like that, but there's not much we can do.  We can write alternate endings about Starlight Glimmer getting her just desserts.
