general media Do you say anime or japanese cartoon?

The definition according to Wikipedia is that Anime is a word used only outside Japan to refer to animated shows aswell as Comics called Manga produced from Japan. In Japan however they call anything animated or drawn for manga or anime. So one could for example say "Disney Anime" or "Pixar Anime" or "Donald Duck Manga".

Now cultural differences i get, but i dont think that is a valid reason to use a word like Anime and Manga, i mean American culture can somewhat be different from others and yet i dont say Comics in my language. I have also heard anime or manga is simply due to the unique drawing style like big eyes, small nose, small + big mouths. Which is not 100% true because Avatar the last airbender and The Legend of Korra has these simularities, the 1st one being animated by koreans and 2nd one being animated both by koreans and japanese. But because the show was produced by americans, thereby it is aknowledged as a cartoon and not an anime despite the fact that it borrows the style.

Also Japan has a much more devoted ideal for their traditional animation that they have different genres for it. While cartoons usually everywhere are more simple minded in some cases, this is not always because when one think of animations from Japan or comics they usually think anything mature, comedy, drama etc, its a big universe. However there have actually existed some form of that in the west they just havent expanded on it, movies like "Watership Down" and "The Plague Dogs".

And there is one thing most animations from Japan share mostly and that is a coherent story, they usually go from point A to point B. Not all but mostly that is the case, like Gintama in some cases feels pointless for example but it can pick up stuff someplace. And yes most cartoons are actually really free for all stuff, however there do exists some shows that have a point A to point B, tv series like "The Animals of Farthing Wood".

I am just wondering if the definition is justified. Or if you are a little rebel and call it Japanese Cartoon/Comic, or if you go with the flow and just call it Anime/Manga like most do in terms of the defined definition.

I tend to go with anime. It *technically* is just a Japanese cartoon in the end, but anime rolls off the tongue soooo much better. It has a badass feel to it. :3 Plus as you said, while anime is Japanese cartoon on the surface, it tends to be in a different caliber, despite have a cartoon look, for some of them. I dunno, many anime seem to be in a different genre all together to me.

I say anime because weeaboos tend to get really angry when you call anime cartoons for some unknown reason. And I don't want to deal with a bunch of angry people every time I'm trying to discuss anime.

I have no idea why, but the term 'Japanese cartoon' just makes me cringe. In the end, anime is just that. But anime just fits better to me.

I dunno : I. I mean i watch Naruto Shippuden because its soon over and is getting good, and yet i am enjoying the show despite calling it a Japanese cartoon, in the same way games from Japan are games. I think it has more to do with people just getting so used to it that the definition is irreplacable.

Its also interesting that Hayao Miyazaki has criticized the term because he see it as a form of idolizing it in general.

The word anime has also been criticised, e.g. in 1987, when Hayao Miyazaki stated that he despised the truncated word anime because to him it represented the desolation of the Japanese animation industry. He equated the desolation with animators lacking motivation and mass-produced, overly expressive products which rely on fixed iconography for facial expressions and protracted and exaggerated action scenes but lack depth and sophistication because they do not attempt to convey emotion or thought

I know a few people that get really uptight if you call a piece of animation from Japan a cartoon. Try this. Refer to anime as Japanimation. You might have to be ready to run though, if you do!

:D

Having said that, I grew up being a fan of anime.

I've always associated anime with being more adult and more mature than cartoons from other countries. There are exceptions obviously, and there are adult cartoons, but anime is distinctly different. The only cartoon from somewhere else that has a similar style is both Avatar cartoons and even those are still different. Also, anime sounds better than "Japanese Cartoon".

I call it anime since I always believed that felt like the proper name to me and "japanese cartoon" sounds silly.

At this point the term "anime" is an umbrella slang that we use to refer to a specific style that comes out of Japan. So yes, I use anime. Don't care what the actual definition of it is.

When you say "anime" most people know what you're talking about so there's little reason to reinvent the wheel on this one. Besides, when you say "Japanese cartoon" you sound ignorant or PC in most cases. :P

Calling it a Japanese cartoon/comic sounds silly. It is it's own style and it's own format. Plus as mentioned, it isn't local to just Japan. Korea has it's own anime. America even has anime. It's moved past being a Japanese thing, even though it is mainly still centered aroudn that country.
