Since they've reformed, they can no longer be villains to the CMCs.  They don't really have any other plot purpose.

You could saw that about any past reformed villains like Discord and Starlight, but they still got some decent character development. I see plenty of potential story ideas they can do with DT and SS, even if it meant having the CMC not be involved in one of them could work.

During Season 7, maybe they'll have some dialogue in a possible Pinkie/CMC episode that we still haven't had one of yet.

You actually don't see the CMCs interacting with any of their classmates since gaining their cutie marks, not just DT and SS.

 

Maybe is S7 we will see them having actual dialogue and interactions with their fellow classmates in some adventure or another. Would be kind of cool to have a class trip go horribly wrong and get too see several of the characters find ways to use their talents to help the group as a whole. The comics did a story arc like that... would be nice if the show followed suit.

Yeah, that was kind of a letdown this season. It's still better than having them being the generic bullies they were though.

Well, at this point you can pretty much say they are done as speaking characters in the show. They are permanent background ponies.
